Agent-Based Computing: Promise and Perils
Agent-based computing represents an exciting new synthesis both for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and, more generally, Computer Science. It has the potential to significantly improve the theory and practice of modelling, designing and implementing complex systems. Yet, to date, there has been little systematic analysis of what makes an agent such an appealing and powerful conceptual model. Moreover, even less effort has been devoted to exploring the inherent disadvantages that stem from adopting an agent-oriented view. Here both sets of issues are explored. The standpoint of this analysis is the role of agent-based software in solving complex, real-world problems. In particular, it will be argued that the development of robust and scalable software systems requires autonomous agents that can complete their objectives while situated in a dynamic and uncertain environment, that can engage in rich, high-level social interactions, and that can operate within flexible organisational structures
An approach to rollback recovery of collaborating mobile agents
Fault-tolerance is one of the main problems that must be resolved to improve the adoption of the agents' computing paradigm. In this paper, we analyse the execution model of agent platforms and the significance of the faults affecting their constituent components on the reliable execution of agent-based applications, in order to develop a pragmatic framework for agent systems fault-tolerance. The developed framework deploys a communication-pairs independent check pointing strategy to offer a low-cost, application-transparent model for reliable agent- based computing that covers all possible faults that might invalidate reliable agent execution, migration and communication and maintains the exactly-one execution property
A Factory-based Approach to Support E-commerce Agent Fabrication
With the development of Internet computing and software agent technologies, agent-based e-commerce is emerging. How to create agents for e-commerce applications has become an important issue along the way to success. We propose a factory-based approach to support agent fabrication in e-commerce and elaborate a design based on the SAFER (Secure Agent Fabrication, Evolution & Roaming) framework. The details of agent fabrication, modular agent structure, agent life cycle, as well as advantages of agent fabrication are presented. Product-brokering agent is employed as a practical agent type to demonstrate our design and Java-based implementation
A Graph-Based Approach to Address Trust and Reputation in Ubiquitous Networks
The increasing popularity of virtual computing environments such as Cloud and Grid computing is helping to drive the realization of ubiquitous and pervasive computing. However, as computing becomes more entrenched in everyday life, the concepts of trust and risk become increasingly important. In this paper, we propose a new graph-based theoretical approach to address trust and reputation in complex ubiquitous networks. We formulate trust as a function of quality of a task and time required to authenticate agent-to-agent relationship based on the Zero-Common Knowledge (ZCK) authentication scheme. This initial representation applies a graph theory concept, accompanied by a mathematical formulation of trust metrics. The approach we propose increases awareness and trustworthiness to agents based on the values estimated for each requested task, we conclude by stating our plans for future work in this area
Cognitively-inspired Agent-based Service Composition for Mobile & Pervasive Computing
Automatic service composition in mobile and pervasive computing faces many
challenges due to the complex and highly dynamic nature of the environment.
Common approaches consider service composition as a decision problem whose
solution is usually addressed from optimization perspectives which are not
feasible in practice due to the intractability of the problem, limited
computational resources of smart devices, service host's mobility, and time
constraints to tailor composition plans. Thus, our main contribution is the
development of a cognitively-inspired agent-based service composition model
focused on bounded rationality rather than optimality, which allows the system
to compensate for limited resources by selectively filtering out continuous
streams of data. Our approach exhibits features such as distributedness,
modularity, emergent global functionality, and robustness, which endow it with
capabilities to perform decentralized service composition by orchestrating
manifold service providers and conflicting goals from multiple users. The
evaluation of our approach shows promising results when compared against
state-of-the-art service composition models.Comment: This paper will appear on AIMS'19 (International Conference on
Artificial Intelligence and Mobile Services) on June 2
Mobile Agent Based Cloud Computing
Cloud Computing is becoming a revolutionizing computing paradigm. It offers various types of services and applications that are being delivered in the internet cloud. The services aim at providing reliable, fault tolerant dynamic computing environment to the user and offers computing resources as per demand. Skype, Dropbox, and Yahoo mail are some of the cloud services that have major impact in our lives. Several measures are taken to maintain the quality of its service in the cloud and to make IT infrastructure available with low cost. This paper presents various aspects of Cloud Computing, its implementation features, challenges and also explores the potential scope for research. The major section of this paper includes surveys of studies related to the possibilities of integrating Mobile Agents in Cloud Computing, since these technologies appear to be promising and marketable. Thus, the paper focuses on resolving challenges and bolstering services of Cloud Computing by utilizing Mobile Agent technology in various aspects of Cloud Computing
