On Reasoning with RDF Statements about Statements using Singleton Property Triples
The Singleton Property (SP) approach has been proposed for representing and
querying metadata about RDF triples such as provenance, time, location, and
evidence. In this approach, one singleton property is created to uniquely
represent a relationship in a particular context, and in general, generates a
large property hierarchy in the schema. It has become the subject of important
questions from Semantic Web practitioners. Can an existing reasoner recognize
the singleton property triples? And how? If the singleton property triples
describe a data triple, then how can a reasoner infer this data triple from the
singleton property triples? Or would the large property hierarchy affect the
reasoners in some way? We address these questions in this paper and present our
study about the reasoning aspects of the singleton properties. We propose a
simple mechanism to enable existing reasoners to recognize the singleton
property triples, as well as to infer the data triples described by the
singleton property triples. We evaluate the effect of the singleton property
triples in the reasoning processes by comparing the performance on RDF datasets
with and without singleton properties. Our evaluation uses as benchmark the
LUBM datasets and the LUBM-SP datasets derived from LUBM with temporal
information added through singleton properties
Semantic Web-Based Integration of Cancer Pathways and Allele Frequency Data
We demonstrate the use of Semantic Web technology to integrate the ALFRED allele frequency database and the Starpath pathway resource. The linking of population-specific genotype data with cancer-related pathway data is potentially useful given the growing interest in personalized medicine and the exploitation of pathway knowledge for cancer drug discovery. We model our data using the Web Ontology Language (OWL), drawing upon ideas from existing standard formats BioPAX for pathway data and PML for allele frequency data. We store our data within an Oracle database, using Oracle Semantic Technologies. We then query the data using Oracle’s rule-based inference engine and SPARQL-like RDF query language. The ability to perform queries across the domains of population genetics and pathways offers the potential to answer a number of cancer-related research questions. Among the possibilities is the ability to identify genetic variants which are associated with cancer pathways and whose frequency varies significantly between ethnic groups. This sort of information could be useful for designing clinical studies and for providing background data in personalized medicine. It could also assist with the interpretation of genetic analysis results such as those from genome-wide association studies
Semantic Web for data harmonization in Chinese medicine
Scientific studies to investigate Chinese medicine with Western medicine have been generating a large amount of data to be shared preferably under a global data standard. This article provides an overview of Semantic Web and identifies some representative Semantic Web applications in Chinese medicine. Semantic Web is proposed as a standard for representing Chinese medicine data and facilitating their integration with Western medicine data
A survey of RDB to RDF translation approaches and tools
ISRN I3S/RR 2013-04-FR 24 pagesRelational databases scattered over the web are generally opaque to regular web crawling tools. To address this concern, many RDB-to-RDF approaches have been proposed over the last years. In this paper, we propose a detailed review of seventeen RDB-to-RDF initiatives, considering end-to-end projects that delivered operational tools. The different tools are classified along three major axes: mapping description language, mapping implementation and data retrieval method. We analyse the motivations, commonalities and differences between existing approaches. The expressiveness of existing mapping languages is not always sufficient to produce semantically rich data and make it usable, interoperable and linkable. We therefore briefly present various strategies investigated in the literature to produce additional knowledge. Finally, we show that R2RML, the W3C recommendation for describing RDB to RDF mappings, may not apply to all needs in the wide scope of RDB to RDF translation applications, leaving space for future extensions
Self-adaptation via concurrent multi-action evaluation for unknown context
Context-aware computing has been attracting growing attention in recent years. Generally, there are several ways for a context-aware system to select a course of action for a particular change of context. One way is for the system developers to encompass all possible context changes in the domain knowledge. Other methods include system inferences and adaptive learning whereby the system executes one action and evaluates the outcome and self-adapts/self-learns based on that. However, in situations where a system encounters unknown contexts, the iterative approach would become unfeasible when the size of the action space increases. Providing efficient solutions to this problem has been the main goal of this research project.
Based on the developed abstract model, the designed methodology replaces the single action implementation and evaluation by multiple actions implemented and evaluated concurrently. This parallel evaluation of actions speeds up significantly the evolution time taken to select the best action suited to unknown context compared to the iterative approach.
The designed and implemented framework efficiently carries out concurrent multi-action evaluation when an unknown context is encountered and finds the best course of action. Two concrete implementations of the framework were carried out demonstrating the usability and adaptability of the framework across multiple domains.
The first implementation was in the domain of database performance tuning. The concrete implementation of the framework demonstrated the ability of concurrent multi-action evaluation technique to performance tune a database when performance is regressed for an unknown reason.
The second implementation demonstrated the ability of the framework to correctly determine the threshold price to be used in a name-your-own-price channel when an unknown context is encountered.
In conclusion the research introduced a new paradigm of a self-adaptation technique for context-aware application. Among the existing body of work, the concurrent multi-action evaluation is classified under the abstract concept of experiment-based self-adaptation techniques
Authorization schema for electronic health-care records: for Uganda
This thesis discusses how to design an authorization schema focused on ensuring each patient's data privacy within a hospital information system
OWL Reasoners still useable in 2023
In a systematic literature and software review over 100 OWL reasoners/systems
were analyzed to see if they would still be usable in 2023. This has never been
done in this capacity. OWL reasoners still play an important role in knowledge
organisation and management, but the last comprehensive surveys/studies are
more than 8 years old. The result of this work is a comprehensive list of 95
standalone OWL reasoners and systems using an OWL reasoner. For each item,
information on project pages, source code repositories and related
documentation was gathered. The raw research data is provided in a Github
repository for anyone to use
Mass Customization of Cloud Services - Engineering, Negotiation and Optimization
Several challenges hinder the entry of mass customization principles into Cloud computing: Firstly, the service engineering on provider side needs to be automated. Secondly, there has to be a suitable negotiation mechanism helping provider and consumer on finding an agreement on Quality-of-Service and price. Thirdly, finding the optimal configuration requires adequate and efficient optimization techniques. The work at hand addresses these challenges through technical and economic contributions
