The Greenstone software has helped spread the practical impact of digital library technology throughout the world-particularly in developing countries. This article reviews the project’s origins, usage, and the development of support mechanisms for Greenstone users. We begin with a brief summary of salient aspects of this open source software package and its user population. Next we describe how its international, humanitarian focus arose. We then review the special requirements imposed by the conditions that prevail in developing courtiers. USER PERCEPTION OF DSPACE IN PDPU LIBRARY: A CASE

This paper examines the extent use of DSpace open source software and its adoption and users perceptions among PDPU libraries as an intuitional repository. Two separate questionnaires were used to gather data. 118 users are selected from stratified random sampling technique from total population of 400; questionnaires were shared to 118 users. The findings revealed that 94 responses were obtained. It is a clear sign coming out from this study is that DSpace software is becoming adoptable option to managing digital collections and building digital repository in Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University Libraries, Gandhinagar, and Gujarat. The current research is a descriptive study to evaluate DSpace digital repository open source system among PDPU Library users (Students, faculties, and staff). Through the experimental study analysis the similarities and differences between cases, identifying areas that have direct implementations for DSpace for Digital Repository to be collected from multiple sources, printed and electronic questionnaires. Web based tools for evaluation and analysis have been accepted for the study. This study it is observed that digital repositories (DR) are become formative in PDPU. Now the things have changed and DSpace has become mature and popular than another open source software for managing Institutional repository, in terms of features, DSpace is rich according to users’ perceptions, availability of community supports, and active participation of DSpace development leads make a very strong software

Creating digital library collections with Greenstone

The Greenstone digital library software is a comprehensive system for building and distributing digital library collections. It provides a way of organizing information based on metadata and publishing ti on the Internet. This paper introduces Greenstone and explains how librarians use it to create and customize digital library collections. Through an end-user interface, they add documents and metadata to collections, create new collections whose structure mirrors existing ones, and build collections and put them in place for users to view. Open Source Software Adoption in Libraries – A Literature Review Study

Purpose: The present study is a literature review and its analysis part of a larger research work i.e. “Issues and Challenges of Using Open Source Software in Private Business Management Education Institutions Libraries of Noida & Ghaziabad Region”. Authors through this study have tried to identified the already published research work related to Open Source Software from different perspectives emphasizing of Indian context in particular. Design/Methodology/Approach: This is a literature review study and hence methodology adopted is to consult all possible sources of literature and particularly secondary literature including papers published in journals, magazines, conferences’ proceedings, websites and/or blogs articles. Dissertations, theses and books published related to the topic are all including in the literature review to have comprehensive view of the research already conducted related to the subject. Analysis of existing literature is done to understand key findings and areas for future research. Findings: Authors analyzed that a lot of work has been done related to origin, history and details of open source software, various types of open source software used in libraries. Lot of literature is available on open source software used for library management and for developing digital libraries, however, very less work has been done by researchers to study any correlation between open source software adoption and gender and age of the librarians. Research implications: The present study would serve as a comprehensive background study on open source software use in libraries and provide new thrust areas for budding researchers that they can work upon

System Function Adoption of an Open Source Digital Repository System: A Global View

This poster reports a project that examines the adoption of system functions of an open source digital repository, DSpace. It also identifies the factors which have influenced the functions\u27 adoption. The data were collected from DSpace user registry from September 2013 to March 2014. A total of 545 repositories in the registry contained system function customizations, representing 533 unique institutions from 95 countries. The preliminary findings indicate that 10 of the 32 available system functions are adopted by over 10% of its members; the majority of repositories are from academia; academic repositories also offer most system functions; and the U.S. and India each comprises over 10% of DSpace repositories that have DSpace system function customizations. Additionally, repositories from India utilize most system functions. About two-thirds of institutions are using DSpace as their institutional repositories and the two major (over 50%) content types are conference publications and technical reports

Research Data Management: A proposed framework to boost research in Higher Educational Institutes

This paper attempts to present a brief overview of several Research Data Management (RDM) issues and a detailed literature review regarding the RDM aspects adopted in libraries globally. Furthermore, it will describe several tendencies concerning the management of repository tools for research data, as well as the challenges in implementing the RDM. The proper planned training and skill development for all stakeholders by mentors to train both staff and users are some of the issues that need to be considered to enhance the RDM process. An effort will be also made to present the suitable policies and workflows along with the adoption of best practices in RDM, so as to boost the research process in an organisation. This study will showcase the implementation of RDM processes in the Higher Educational Institute of India, referring particularly to the Central Library @ NIT Rourkela in Odisha, India with a proposed framework.
