    Saving Energy in Mobile Devices for On-Demand Multimedia Streaming -- A Cross-Layer Approach

    This paper proposes a novel energy-efficient multimedia delivery system called EStreamer. First, we study the relationship between buffer size at the client, burst-shaped TCP-based multimedia traffic, and energy consumption of wireless network interfaces in smartphones. Based on the study, we design and implement EStreamer for constant bit rate and rate-adaptive streaming.     Traffic Profiling for Mobile Video Streaming

    This paper describes a novel system that provides key parameters of HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) sessions to the lower layers of the protocol stack. A non-intrusive traffic profiling solution is proposed that observes packet flows at the transmit queue of base stations, edge-routers, or gateways. By analyzing IP flows in real time, the presented scheme identifies different phases of an HAS session and estimates important application-layer parameters, such as play-back buffer state and video encoding rate. The introduced estimators only use IP-layer information, do not require standardization and work even with traffic that is encrypted via Transport Layer Security (TLS). Experimental results for a popular video streaming service clearly verify the high accuracy of the proposed solution. Traffic profiling, thus, provides a valuable alternative to cross-layer signaling and Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) in order to perform efficient network optimization for video streaming.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures.     Performance of TCP/UDP under Ad Hoc IEEE802.11

    TCP is the De facto standard for connection oriented transport layer protocol, while UDP is the De facto standard for transport layer protocol, which is used with real time traffic for audio and video. Although there have been many attempts to measure and analyze the performance of the TCP protocol in wireless networks, very few research was done on the UDP or the interaction between TCP and UDP traffic over the wireless link. In this paper, we tudy the performance of TCP and UDP over IEEE802.11 ad hoc network. We used two topologies, a string and a mesh topology. Our work indicates that IEEE802.11 as a ad-hoc network is not very suitable for bulk transfer using TCP. It also indicates that it is much better for real-time audio. Although one has to be careful here since real-time audio does require much less bandwidth than the wireless link bandwidth.     Integrated Support for Handoff Management and Context-Awareness in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

    The overwhelming success of mobile devices and wireless communications is stressing the need for the development of mobility-aware services. Device mobility requires services adapting their behavior to sudden context changes and being aware of handoffs, which introduce unpredictable delays and intermittent discontinuities. Heterogeneity of wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G) complicates the situation, since a different treatment of context-awareness and handoffs is required for each solution. This paper presents a middleware architecture designed to ease mobility-aware service development. The architecture hides technology-specific mechanisms and offers a set of facilities for context awareness and handoff management. The architecture prototype works with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which today represent two of the most widespread wireless technologies. In addition, the paper discusses motivations and design details in the challenging context of mobile multimedia streaming applications
