Human Like Adaptation of Force and Impedance in Stable and Unstable Tasks
Abstract—This paper presents a novel human-like learning con-troller to interact with unknown environments. Strictly derived from the minimization of instability, motion error, and effort, the controller compensates for the disturbance in the environment in interaction tasks by adapting feedforward force and impedance. In contrast with conventional learning controllers, the new controller can deal with unstable situations that are typical of tool use and gradually acquire a desired stability margin. Simulations show that this controller is a good model of human motor adaptation. Robotic implementations further demonstrate its capabilities to optimally adapt interaction with dynamic environments and humans in joint torque controlled robots and variable impedance actuators, with-out requiring interaction force sensing. Shear-invariant Sliding Contact Perception with a Soft Tactile Sensor
Manipulation tasks often require robots to be continuously in contact with an
object. Therefore tactile perception systems need to handle continuous contact
data. Shear deformation causes the tactile sensor to output path-dependent
readings in contrast to discrete contact readings. As such, in some
continuous-contact tasks, sliding can be regarded as a disturbance over the
sensor signal. Here we present a shear-invariant perception method based on
principal component analysis (PCA) which outputs the required information about
the environment despite sliding motion. A compliant tactile sensor (the TacTip)
is used to investigate continuous tactile contact. First, we evaluate the
method offline using test data collected whilst the sensor slides over an edge.
Then, the method is used within a contour-following task applied to 6 objects
with varying curvatures; all contours are successfully traced. The method
demonstrates generalisation capabilities and could underlie a more
sophisticated controller for challenging manipulation or exploration tasks in

MIRO: A robot “Mammal” with a biomimetic brain-based control system
We describe the design of a novel commercial biomimetic brain-based robot, MIRO, developed as a prototype robot companion. The MIRO robot is animal-like in several aspects of its appearance, however, it is also biomimetic in a more significant way, in that its control architecture mimics some of the key principles underlying the design of the mammalian brain as revealed by neuroscience. Specifically, MIRO builds on decades of previous work in developing robots with brain-based control systems using a layered control architecture alongside centralized mechanisms for integration and action selection. MIRO’s control system operates across three core processors, P1-P3, that mimic aspects of spinal cord, brainstem, and forebrain functionality respectively. Whilst designed as a versatile prototype for next generation companion robots, MIRO also provides developers and researchers with a new platform for investigating the potential advantages of brain-based control
Human-like arm motion generation: a review
In the last decade, the objectives outlined by the needs of personal robotics have led to the rise of new biologically-inspired techniques for arm motion planning. This paper presents a literature review of the most recent research on the generation of human-like arm movements in humanoid and manipulation robotic systems. Search methods and inclusion criteria are described. The studies are analyzed taking into consideration the sources of publication, the experimental settings, the type of movements, the technical approach, and the human motor principles that have been used to inspire and assess human-likeness. Results show that there is a strong focus on the generation of single-arm reaching movements and biomimetic-based methods. However, there has been poor attention to manipulation, obstacle-avoidance mechanisms, and dual-arm motion generation. For these reasons, human-like arm motion generation may not fully respect human behavioral and neurological key features and may result restricted to specific tasks of human-robot interaction.
