Learning the Uncertainty Sets for Control Dynamics via Set Membership: A Non-Asymptotic Analysis

Set-membership estimation is commonly used in adaptive/learning-based control algorithms that require robustness over the model uncertainty sets, e.g., online robustly stabilizing control and robust adaptive model predictive control. Despite having broad applications, non-asymptotic estimation error bounds in the stochastic setting are limited. This paper provides such a non-asymptotic bound on the diameter of the uncertainty sets generated by set membership estimation on linear dynamical systems under bounded, i.i.d. disturbances. Further, this result is applied to robust adaptive model predictive control with uncertainty sets updated by set membership. We numerically demonstrate the performance of the robust adaptive controller, which rapidly approaches the performance of the offline optimal model predictive controller, in comparison with the control design based on least square estimation's confidence regions

openThis research focuses on the problem of manipulator control in the presence of uncertainty and aims to compare different approaches for handling uncertainty while developing robust and adaptive methods that can control the robot without explicit knowledge of uncertainty bounds. Uncertainty is a pervasive challenge in robotics, arising from various sources such as sensor noise, modeling errors, and external disturbances. Effectively addressing uncertainty is crucial for achieving accurate and reliable manipulator control. The research will explore and compare existing methods for uncertainty handling such as robust feedback linearization , sliding mode control and robust adaptive control. These methods provide mechanisms to model and compensate for uncertainty in the control system. Additionally, modified robust and adaptive control methods will be developed that can dynamically adjust control laws based on the observed states, without requiring explicit knowledge of uncertainty bounds. To evaluate the performance of the different approaches, comprehensive experiments will be conducted on a manipulator platform. Various manipulation tasks will be performed under different levels of uncertainty, and the performance of each control approach will be assessed in terms of accuracy, stability, and adaptability. Comparative analysis will be conducted to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each method and identify the most effective approach for handling uncertainty in manipulator control. The outcomes of this research will contribute to the advancement of manipulator control by providing insights into the effectiveness of different approaches for uncertainty handling. The development of new robust and adaptive control methods will enable manipulators to operate in uncertain environments without requiring explicit knowledge of uncertainty bounds. Ultimately, this research will facilitate the deployment of more reliable and adaptive robotic systems capable of handling uncertainty and improving their performance in various real-world applications. This research focuses on the problem of manipulator control in the presence of uncertainty and aims to compare different approaches for handling uncertainty while developing robust and adaptive methods that can control the robot without explicit knowledge of uncertainty bounds. An Efficient Resilient MPC Scheme via Constraint Tightening against Cyberattacks: Application to Vehicle Cruise Control

We propose a novel framework for designing a resilient Model Predictive Control (MPC) targeting uncertain linear systems under cyber attack. Assuming a periodic attack scenario, we model the system under Denial of Service (DoS) attack, also with measurement noise, as an uncertain linear system with parametric and additive uncertainty. To detect anomalies, we employ a Kalman filter-based approach. Then, through our observations of the intensity of the launched attack, we determine a range of possible values for the system matrices, as well as establish bounds of the additive uncertainty for the equivalent uncertain system. Leveraging a recent constraint tightening robust MPC method, we present an optimization-based resilient algorithm. Accordingly, we compute the uncertainty bounds and corresponding constraints offline for various attack magnitudes. Then, this data can be used efficiently in the MPC computations online. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed framework on the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) problem.Comment: To Appear in ICINCO 202
