Session Types with Runtime Adaptation: Overview and Examples

In recent work, we have developed a session types discipline for a calculus that features the usual constructs for session establishment and communication, but also two novel constructs that enable communicating processes to be stopped, duplicated, or discarded at runtime. The aim is to understand whether known techniques for the static analysis of structured communications scale up to the challenging context of context-aware, adaptable distributed systems, in which disciplined interaction and runtime adaptation are intertwined concerns. In this short note, we summarize the main features of our session-typed framework with runtime adaptation, and recall its basic correctness properties. We illustrate our framework by means of examples. In particular, we present a session representation of supervision trees, a mechanism for enforcing fault-tolerant applications in the Erlang language.Comment: In Proceedings PLACES 2013, arXiv:1312.221

Emerging Adaptive Architectures for Biomolecular Computation

    Get PDF
The goal of this work is to explore applications of reservoir computing in biomolecular computation. Reservoir computing is a unique model for representing a mapping from one instance in time to a specific output. A neural network of randomly connected neurons is linked with a single output neuron or multiple output neurons. The output neurons are capable of mapping inputs to desired outputs using adaptable algorithms. This framework is investigated by using the Python programming language and object oriented design and programming. Neurons are created in programs by bundling information like input data and attributes of the network, which utilize methods (for instance the sum of a dot product, the hyperbolic tangent function) to operate on data (e.g. arbitrary input arrays, two variable binary inputs). This work is motivated by the idea of using adaptable algorithms instead of hardcoding information to solve classification problems in biomolecular computation, such as identifying molecular information like presence of a virus

K-Adaptability in Two-Stage Distributionally Robust Binary Programming

    Get PDF
We propose to approximate two-stage distributionally robust programs with binary recourse decisions by their associated K-adaptability problems, which pre-select K candidate secondstage policies here-and-now and implement the best of these policies once the uncertain parameters have been observed. We analyze the approximation quality and the computational complexity of the K-adaptability problem, and we derive explicit mixed-integer linear programming reformulations. We also provide efficient procedures for bounding the probabilities with which each of the K second-stage policies is selected

Theory and Applications of Robust Optimization

In this paper we survey the primary research, both theoretical and applied, in the area of Robust Optimization (RO). Our focus is on the computational attractiveness of RO approaches, as well as the modeling power and broad applicability of the methodology. In addition to surveying prominent theoretical results of RO, we also present some recent results linking RO to adaptable models for multi-stage decision-making problems. Finally, we highlight applications of RO across a wide spectrum of domains, including finance, statistics, learning, and various areas of engineering.Comment: 50 page
