Measuring the Use of the Active and Assisted Living Prototype CARIMO for Home Care Service Users: Evaluation Framework and Results

    Get PDF
To address the challenges of aging societies, various information and communication technology (ICT)-based systems for older people have been developed in recent years. Currently, the evaluation of these so-called active and assisted living (AAL) systems usually focuses on the analyses of usability and acceptance, while some also assess their impact. Little is known about the actual take-up of these assistive technologies. This paper presents a framework for measuring the take-up by analyzing the actual usage of AAL systems. This evaluation framework covers detailed information regarding the entire process including usage data logging, data preparation, and usage data analysis. We applied the framework on the AAL prototype CARIMO for measuring its take-up during an eight-month field trial in Austria and Italy. The framework was designed to guide systematic, comparable, and reproducible usage data evaluation in the AAL field; however, the general applicability of the framework has yet to be validated

If only it were true: the problem with the four conditionals

    Get PDF
The traditional division of conditionals into four main types (zero, first, second, and third) has long been called into question. Unfortunately, the awareness that this description does not reflect conditional patterns in actual usage has not generally been reflected in EFL coursebooks. This article re-examines the arguments for a description of conditional patterns which reflects actual usage and uses corpus data to demonstrate the kind of patterns in frequent use. It then suggests two teaching approaches that may help teachers to tackle a variety of conditional patterns in the classroom

Factors Influencing Internet Banking’s Actual Usage

Information technology usage has been a major focus of information systems research for more than two decades. This is because information technology usage has been demonstrated to be a key driver of organizational performance. While most prior research on information technology usage has focused on initial usage or acceptance (Anderson et al., 2001; Davis et al., 1989; Taylor and Todd, 1995), long term information technology usage or continuance has recently gained increased attention among researchers (Devaraj and Kohli, 2003; Pollard, 2003; Premkumar and Bhattacherjee, 2008). Information technology development is a great opportunity for companies to creatively innovate their product in order to develop their business. One of the information technology-based products that grow quite rapidly at this time is Internet banking. Internet banking is one of the information technology that give option to their customers for bypassing the time-consuming, paper-based aspects of traditional banking in order to manage their finances more quickly and efficiently. This opportunity has been seen by CIMB Niaga as one of the largest bank in Indonesia. Our study is to analyze the effect of personal innovativeness, social influence, compability, behavioral intention of use on actual usage as the propose of an extended framework to re-examine actual usage of technology. This study uses a quantitative approach using regression techniques (multiple regression) through the program SPSS 16. The samples were 150 respondents with non probability sampling technique. The sampling method was purposive sampling. Keywords: Personal Innovativeness, Social Influence, Compatibility, Behavioral Intention, Actual Usage, Internet Bankin

Eliciting usage contexts of safety-critical medical devices

    Get PDF
This position paper outlines our approach to improve the usage choice of suitable devices in different health care environments (contexts). Safety-critical medical devices are presumed to have undergone a thorough (user-centred) design process to optimize the device for the intended purpose, user group and environment. However, in real-life health care scenarios, actual usage may not reflect the original design parameters. We suggest the identification of further usage contexts for safety-critical medical devices through ethnographic and other studies, to assist better modelling of the challenges of different usage environments. In combination with system and interaction models, these context models can then be used for decision-support in choosing medical devices that are suitable for the intended environment

Usage Effects on the Cognitive Routinization of Chinese Resultative Verbs

    Get PDF
The present study adopts a corpus-oriented usage-based approach to the grammar of Chinese resultative verbs. Zooming in on a specific class of V-kai constructions, this paper aims to elucidate the effect of frequency in actual usage events on shaping the linguistic representations of resultative verbs. Specifically, it will be argued that while high token frequency results in more lexicalized V-kai complex verbs, high type frequency gives rise to more schematized V-kai constructions. The routinized patterns pertinent to V-kai resultative verbs varying in their extent of specificity and generality accordingly serve as a representative illustration of the continuum between lexicon and grammar that characterizes a usage-based conception of language

An active learning and training environment for database programming

    Get PDF
Active learning facilitated through interactive, self-controlled learning environments differs substantially from traditional instructor-oriented, classroom-based teaching. We present a tool for database programming that integrates knowledge learning and skills training. How these tools are used most effectively is still an open question. Therefore, we discuss analysis and evaluation of these Web-based environments focusing on different aspects of learning behaviour and tool usage. Motivation, acceptance of the learning approach, learning organisation and actual tool usage are aspects of behaviour that require different techniques to be used

An Analysis of the Utilization of Regional Fishing Ports in the Philippines

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the issue of underutilization of Philippine regional fishing ports using secondary data from institutional resources and interviews with key informants. Analysis indicates that most of the existing regional ports are underutilized, having low actual usage to projected usage ratios. The paper argues that low commercial and aquaculture fish production contributes to the underutilization of ports.port reduction, utilization

Web Acceptance and Usage Model: A Comparison between Goal-directed and Experiential Web Users

    Get PDF
In this paper we analyse the Web acceptance and usage between goal-directed users and experiential users, incorporating intrinsic motives to improve the particular and explanatory TAM value –traditionally related to extrinsic motives-. A field study was conducted to validate measures used to operationalize model variables and to test the hypothesised network of relationships. The data analysis method used was Partial Least Squares (PLS).The empirical results provided strong support for the hypotheses, highlighting the roles of flow, ease of use and usefulness in determining the actual use of the Web among experiential and goal-directed users. In contrast with previous research that suggests that flow would be more likely to occur during experiential activities than goal-directed activities, we found clear evidence of flow for goal-directed activities. In particular the study findings indicate that flow might play a powerfulrole in determining the attitude towards usage, intention to useand, in turn, actual Web use among experiential and goal-directed users
