    Database Integration: the Key to Data Interoperability

    Most of new databases are no more built from scratch, but re-use existing data from several autonomous data stores. To facilitate application development, the data to be re-used should preferably be redefined as a virtual database, providing for the logical unification of the underlying data sets. This unification process is called database integration. This chapter provides a global picture of the issues raised and the approaches that have been proposed to tackle the problem

    Towards interoperability in heterogeneous database systems

    Distributed heterogeneous databases consist of systems which differ physically and logically, containing different data models and data manipulation languages. Although these databases are independently created and administered they must cooperate and interoperate. Users need to access and manipulate data from several databases and applications may require data from a wide variety of independent databases. Therefore, a new system architecture is required to manipulate and manage distinct and multiple databases, in a transparent way, while preserving their autonomy. This report contains an extensive survey on heterogeneous databases, analysing and comparing the different aspects, concepts and approaches related to the topic. It introduces an architecture to support interoperability among heterogeneous database systems. The architecture avoids the use of a centralised structure to assist in the different phases of the interoperability process. It aims to support scalability, and to assure privacy and nfidentiality of the data. The proposed architecture allows the databases to decide when to participate in the system, what type of data to share and with which other databases, thereby preserving their autonomy. The report also describes an approach to information discovery in the proposed architecture, without using any centralised structure as repositories and dictionaries, and broadcasting to all databases. It attempts to reduce the number of databases searched and to preserve the privacy of the shared data. The main idea is to visit a database that either containsthe requested data or knows about another database that possible contains this data

    A federated database is comprised of multiple interconnected databases that cooperate in an autonomous fashion. Global integrity constraints are very useful in federated databases, but the lack of global queries, global transaction mechanisms, and global concurrency control renders traditional constraint management techniques inapplicable. The paper presents a threefold contribution to integrity constraint checking in federated databases: (1) the problem of constraint checking in a federated database environment is clearly formulated; (2) a family of cooperative protocols for constraint checking is presented; (3) the differences across protocols in the family are analyzed with respect to system requirements, properties guaranteed, and costs involved. Thus, we provide a suite of options with protocols for various environments with specific system capabilities and integrity requirement

    Many organizations invest heavily in heterogeneous databases according to organizational functions. These heterogeneous databases are stand-alone systems that do not interact with one another. The objective of this paper is to introduce a multi-database system (MDBMS) that interacts with other heterogeneous DBMS within the organization to integrate information processing. In this paper, we discuss the potential inconsistencies in integrating heterogeneous databases. We further extend to include issues in designing a MDBMS. With a MDBMS, data sharing across organization reduces overheads and costs, thus, provides a competitive advantage to the global firms

    Coalition formation in transmission expansion planning

We define first who are the agents in the expansion game and provide a decentralized coalition scheme based on Bilateral Shapley values.     Zentrale ECA-Regeln wurden fĂŒr zentrale aktive Datenbanksysteme entwickelt. In verteilten aktiven Datenbanksystemen tritt zusĂ€tzlich das Prob-lem der Unerreichbarkeit von Teilsystemen auf und damit die Unentscheidbarkeit von ECA-Bedingungen, die sich auf entfernte Systeme beziehen. In diesem Papier wird daher eine entsprechende Erweiterung der ECA-Regeln fĂŒr verteilte aktive Datenbanksysteme vorgeschlagen, um auch bei Unerreichbarkeit und Unentscheidbarkeit der ECA-Bedingungen reagieren zu können. Dazu wird zunĂ€chst die ECA-Auswertung zu einer strikten Funktion mit dem Unerreichbar-keitszustand Ω erweitert und dann die ECA-Regeln um Alternative Aktionen AA angereichert. Der Einsatz und Vorteil dieser erweiterten ECA-Regeln wird am Beispiel der Erhaltung der Datenkonsistenz in verteilten aktiven Datenbank-systemen gezeigt

    K2/Kleisli and GUS: Experiments in Integrated Access to Genomic Data Sources

    The integration of heterogeneous data sources and software systems is a major issue in the biomed ical community and several approaches have been explored: linking databases, on-the- fly integration through views, and integration through warehousing. In this paper we report on our experiences with two systems that were developed at the University of Pennsylvania: an integration system called K2, which has primarily been used to provide views over multiple external data sources and software systems; and a data warehouse called GUS which downloads, cleans, integrates and annotates data from multiple external data sources. Although the view and warehouse approaches each have their advantages, there is no clear winner . Therefore, users must consider how the data is to be used, what the performance guarantees must be, and how much programmer time and expertise is available to choose the best strategy for a particular application

    'Advanced database applications', such as CAD/CAM, CASE, large AI applications or image and voice processing, place demands on transaction management which differ substantially from those in traditional database applications. In particular, there is a need to support 'enriched' data models (which include, for example, complex objects or version and configuration management), 'synergistic' cooperative work, and application- or user-supported consistency. Unfortunately, the demands are not only sophisticated but also diversified, which means that different application areas might even place contradictory demands on transaction management. This paper deals with these problems and offers a solution by introducing a flexible and adaptable tool kit approach for transaction management
