SUBIC: A supervised, structured binary code for image search
For large-scale visual search, highly compressed yet meaningful
representations of images are essential. Structured vector quantizers based on
product quantization and its variants are usually employed to achieve such
compression while minimizing the loss of accuracy. Yet, unlike binary hashing
schemes, these unsupervised methods have not yet benefited from the
supervision, end-to-end learning and novel architectures ushered in by the deep
learning revolution. We hence propose herein a novel method to make deep
convolutional neural networks produce supervised, compact, structured binary
codes for visual search. Our method makes use of a novel block-softmax
non-linearity and of batch-based entropy losses that together induce structure
in the learned encodings. We show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art
compact representations based on deep hashing or structured quantization in
single and cross-domain category retrieval, instance retrieval and
classification. We make our code and models publicly available online.Comment: Accepted at ICCV 2017 (Spotlight
CMIR-NET : A Deep Learning Based Model For Cross-Modal Retrieval In Remote Sensing
We address the problem of cross-modal information retrieval in the domain of
remote sensing. In particular, we are interested in two application scenarios:
i) cross-modal retrieval between panchromatic (PAN) and multi-spectral imagery,
and ii) multi-label image retrieval between very high resolution (VHR) images
and speech based label annotations. Notice that these multi-modal retrieval
scenarios are more challenging than the traditional uni-modal retrieval
approaches given the inherent differences in distributions between the
modalities. However, with the growing availability of multi-source remote
sensing data and the scarcity of enough semantic annotations, the task of
multi-modal retrieval has recently become extremely important. In this regard,
we propose a novel deep neural network based architecture which is considered
to learn a discriminative shared feature space for all the input modalities,
suitable for semantically coherent information retrieval. Extensive experiments
are carried out on the benchmark large-scale PAN - multi-spectral DSRSID
dataset and the multi-label UC-Merced dataset. Together with the Merced
dataset, we generate a corpus of speech signals corresponding to the labels.
Superior performance with respect to the current state-of-the-art is observed

Visual Search at eBay
In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end approach for scalable visual
search infrastructure. We discuss the challenges we faced for a massive
volatile inventory like at eBay and present our solution to overcome those. We
harness the availability of large image collection of eBay listings and
state-of-the-art deep learning techniques to perform visual search at scale.
Supervised approach for optimized search limited to top predicted categories
and also for compact binary signature are key to scale up without compromising
accuracy and precision. Both use a common deep neural network requiring only a
single forward inference. The system architecture is presented with in-depth
discussions of its basic components and optimizations for a trade-off between
search relevance and latency. This solution is currently deployed in a
distributed cloud infrastructure and fuels visual search in eBay ShopBot and
Close5. We show benchmark on ImageNet dataset on which our approach is faster
and more accurate than several unsupervised baselines. We share our learnings
with the hope that visual search becomes a first class citizen for all large
scale search engines rather than an afterthought.Comment: To appear in 23rd SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data
