Multi-View Picking: Next-best-view Reaching for Improved Grasping in Clutter
Camera viewpoint selection is an important aspect of visual grasp detection,
especially in clutter where many occlusions are present. Where other approaches
use a static camera position or fixed data collection routines, our Multi-View
Picking (MVP) controller uses an active perception approach to choose
informative viewpoints based directly on a distribution of grasp pose estimates
in real time, reducing uncertainty in the grasp poses caused by clutter and
occlusions. In trials of grasping 20 objects from clutter, our MVP controller
achieves 80% grasp success, outperforming a single-viewpoint grasp detector by
12%. We also show that our approach is both more accurate and more efficient

Kinematically-Decoupled Impedance Control for Fast Object Visual Servoing and Grasping on Quadruped Manipulators
We propose a control pipeline for SAG (Searching, Approaching, and Grasping)
of objects, based on a decoupled arm kinematic chain and impedance control,
which integrates image-based visual servoing (IBVS). The kinematic decoupling
allows for fast end-effector motions and recovery that leads to robust visual
servoing. The whole approach and pipeline can be generalized for any mobile
platform (wheeled or tracked vehicles), but is most suitable for dynamically
moving quadruped manipulators thanks to their reactivity against disturbances.
The compliance of the impedance controller makes the robot safer for
interactions with humans and the environment. We demonstrate the performance
and robustness of the proposed approach with various experiments on our 140 kg
HyQReal quadruped robot equipped with a 7-DoF manipulator arm. The experiments
consider dynamic locomotion, tracking under external disturbances, and fast

An Object SLAM Framework for Association, Mapping, and High-Level Tasks
Object SLAM is considered increasingly significant for robot high-level
perception and decision-making. Existing studies fall short in terms of data
association, object representation, and semantic mapping and frequently rely on
additional assumptions, limiting their performance. In this paper, we present a
comprehensive object SLAM framework that focuses on object-based perception and
object-oriented robot tasks. First, we propose an ensemble data association
approach for associating objects in complicated conditions by incorporating
parametric and nonparametric statistic testing. In addition, we suggest an
outlier-robust centroid and scale estimation algorithm for modeling objects
based on the iForest and line alignment. Then a lightweight and object-oriented
map is represented by estimated general object models. Taking into
consideration the semantic invariance of objects, we convert the object map to
a topological map to provide semantic descriptors to enable multi-map matching.
Finally, we suggest an object-driven active exploration strategy to achieve
autonomous mapping in the grasping scenario. A range of public datasets and
real-world results in mapping, augmented reality, scene matching,
relocalization, and robotic manipulation have been used to evaluate the

Task priority control of underwater intervention systems: Theory and applications
This paper presents a unifying task priority control architecture for underwater vehicle manipulator systems. The proposed control framework can be applied to different operative scenarios such as waypoint navigation, assisted teleoperation, interaction, landing and grasping. This work extends the results of the TRIDENT and MARIS projects, which were limited to the execution of grasping actions, to other applications taken from the DexROV and ROBUST projects. In particular, simulation results show how the control framework can be used, for example, for pipeline inspection scenarios and deep sea mining exploration
Data-driven robotic manipulation of cloth-like deformable objects : the present, challenges and future prospects
Manipulating cloth-like deformable objects (CDOs) is a long-standing problem in the robotics community. CDOs are flexible (non-rigid) objects that do not show a detectable level of compression strength while two points on the article are pushed towards each other and include objects such as ropes (1D), fabrics (2D) and bags (3D). In general, CDOs’ many degrees of freedom (DoF) introduce severe self-occlusion and complex state–action dynamics as significant obstacles to perception and manipulation systems. These challenges exacerbate existing issues of modern robotic control methods such as imitation learning (IL) and reinforcement learning (RL). This review focuses on the application details of data-driven control methods on four major task families in this domain: cloth shaping, knot tying/untying, dressing and bag manipulation. Goal Set Inverse Optimal Control and Iterative Re-planning for Predicting Human Reaching Motions in Shared Workspaces
To enable safe and efficient human-robot collaboration in shared workspaces
it is important for the robot to predict how a human will move when performing
a task. While predicting human motion for tasks not known a priori is very
challenging, we argue that single-arm reaching motions for known tasks in
collaborative settings (which are especially relevant for manufacturing) are
indeed predictable. Two hypotheses underlie our approach for predicting such
motions: First, that the trajectory the human performs is optimal with respect
to an unknown cost function, and second, that human adaptation to their
partner's motion can be captured well through iterative re-planning with the
above cost function. The key to our approach is thus to learn a cost function
which "explains" the motion of the human. To do this, we gather example
trajectories from pairs of participants performing a collaborative assembly
task using motion capture. We then use Inverse Optimal Control to learn a cost
function from these trajectories. Finally, we predict reaching motions from the
human's current configuration to a task-space goal region by iteratively
re-planning a trajectory using the learned cost function. Our planning
algorithm is based on the trajectory optimizer STOMP, it plans for a 23 DoF
human kinematic model and accounts for the presence of a moving collaborator
and obstacles in the environment. Our results suggest that in most cases, our
method outperforms baseline methods when predicting motions. We also show that
our method outperforms baselines for predicting human motion when a human and a
