Learning morphological phenomena of Modern Greek an exploratory approach

    Get PDF
This paper presents a computational model for the description of concatenative morphological phenomena of modern Greek (such as inflection, derivation and compounding) to allow learners, trainers and developers to explore linguistic processes through their own constructions in an interactive open‐ended multimedia environment. The proposed model introduces a new language metaphor, the ‘puzzle‐metaphor’ (similar to the existing ‘turtle‐metaphor’ for concepts from mathematics and physics), based on a visualized unification‐like mechanism for pattern matching. The computational implementation of the model can be used for creating environments for learning through design and learning by teaching

    Contemporary database topics:learning by teaching

Passive learning is generally believed to be ineffectual in that it leads to a generally impoverished student experience manifested by poor attendance, engagement and motivation alike. A shift towards a more pro-active learning experience was therefore the main motivator for the proposed method outlined in this paper. The method adopted was applied to a single module for a cohort of postgraduate, mainly international students. In our method, each student is charged with delivering a specialist database topic as part of an allocated group. They self-organise their group into two sub-groups for lecture and tutorial delivery respectively. Staff support the process by delivering the teaching in the first half of the module. The second, student-led phase is staff-supported using preparatory meetings to discuss content and presentation issues prior to delivery. Feedback overall indicates that the method is effective, particularly in confidence building. We believe that the latter more than compensates for the one or two concerns raised about the quality of information being received. We conclude by discussing a number of changes based on two years’ experience and student feedback

Preliminary study: An investigation on learning assistance requirement among low achievers in primary schools

Learning is crucial for everybody regardless of their ability and achievement. Some children demonstrate inability in academic performance from their early stage of learning process; thus, categorized as low achievers (LA).In order to define learning difficulties and requirements among LA children, a qualitative study was conducted using three different techniques; i) semi- structured interview, ii) document review with LINUS content experts and iii) observation with students from five schools in Kedah and Perlis. The results reveal that, the LA children need a specific computer-based learning assistance as an alternative learning material to facilitate their learning process.Learning concepts are also discussed as an initial suggestion in this study

The Designing of an Image Management System for Lecturing and Learning

    Get PDF
[[abstract]]We present an image management system, called CanFind, for lecturing and learning. The designed web-based image management system aims to facilitate lecture and learning activity design purposes. It supports the following special features such as user personalization, semantic image retrieval, and systematic browsing. In order to provide semantic image retrieval feature, we integrate keyword extraction and keyword expansion schemes in the construction of indexing for the corresponding images. As a result, the demand images can be retrieved under the abstract level of images. Meanwhile, images upload and sharing functions are embedded in the system. As a result users may share their personal works among users. We have implemented the above system for the online and classroom lecture and the learning activity designs at Tamkang University.[[conferencetype]]國際[[conferencedate]]20020909~20020912[[conferencelocation]]Kazan, Tatarstan, Russi

On the design of Web-based interactive multimedia contents for English learning

    Get PDF
[[abstract]]We present a Web-based authoring tool to create interactive multimedia contents for English learning. Target users of this authoring tool are English teachers and content designer, therefore, ease of use and simplicity are the fundamental issues. Furthermore, the authoring tool and multimedia database are integrated in the context of intelligent Web-based interactive language learning (IWiLL) system. Special language tools to access corpus, manipulate multimedia elements, and create collaborative learning sessions are designed in the system. These resources and tools on hand yield the potential to create rich and deep interactive multimedia contents[[conferencetype]]國際[[conferencedate]]20040831~20040831[[booktype]]紙本[[conferencelocation]]Joensuu, Finlan

Differentiated instruction in primary schools : implementation and challenges in Indonesia

    Get PDF
The paper identifies the level and nature of differentiated instruction (DI) implementation in Indonesian primary schools. Teachers reported their level of DI adoption and reacted to five vignettes reflecting key dimensions of DI. Research data revealed overall DI implementation is significantly below the mastery learning benchmark (80%). Nevertheless, teachers feel they are able to cope with student diversity and have basic ideas about DI implementation. Research implications point at educational policies to invest in initial teacher training and professional development, next to a need for parent involvement. Future research could centre on studying actual teacher behavior in classrooms, next to experimenting with particular DI-strategies

Everything You Wanted to Know About MPEG-7: Part 1

Part I of this article provides an overview of the development, functionality, and applicability of MPEG-7. We ll first present the role of MPEG-7 within the context of past MPEG standards. We then outline ideas of what should be possible using MPEG-7 technology. In Part II, we ll discuss the description of MPEG-7 s concepts, terminology, and requirements. We ll then compare MPEG-7 to other approaches on multimedia content description
