    Defining acoustical heritage: A qualitative approach based on expert interviews

    The interdisciplinary study of acoustics/sound and heritage occurs in different countries and cultures, but there is no uniform consensus on the terminology and definitions of the field. This study aims to explore the definition of acoustical heritage. The study used structured interviews with experts from different cultures and different disciplines and analyzed the interview data in detail through thematic analysis. The five themes are: different terminology, subjects in acoustical heritage, possible categories of acoustical heritage, value of acoustical heritage, and challenges of acoustical heritage preservation. Based on individual definitions of acoustical heritage proposed by experts and through detailed analysis and discussion, this paper proposes a multidimensional definition of acoustical heritage

    Fresnel diffraction calculation on an arbitrary shape surface is proposed. This method is capable of calculating Fresnel diffraction from a source surface with an arbitrary shape to a planar destination surface. Although such calculation can be readily calculated by the direct integral of a diffraction calculation, the calculation cost is proportional to O(N2)O(N^2) in one dimensional or O(N4)O(N^4) in two dimensional cases, where NN is the number of sampling points. However, the calculation cost of the proposed method is O(NlogN)O(N \log N) in one dimensional or O(N2logN)O(N^2 \log N) in two dimensional cases using non-uniform fast Fourier transform

    A case study on practical live event sound exposure monitoring

    The recently launched WHO Global Standard for Safe Listening Venues and Events aims to make listening safer and more enjoyable for audiences around the world. Some key questions remain on how to practically monitor sound exposure as well as on how patrons’ hearing may be affected after significant exposure. This paper presents a case study where various sound exposure monitoring systems and methods were trialed in an indoor music venue. The aim of the work was to develop and validate a practical, accurate and repeatable technique to track sound exposure across music venues that can be presented in real-time. Results indicate that this can be achieved with no more than four, and as few as two, sound level monitoring locations alongside fixed calibration measurements and a small number of spot measurements at the mix position during a performance

The paper briefly summarises the history of the development of Verbus modular housing and the acoustic design considerations of the process. Results are presented from two sound insulation tests conducted during the course of the project. The results are discussed in terms of compliance with Approved Document E1 and increased performance standards such as EcoHomes2
