Effects of Pitfall Trap Preservative on Collections of Carabid Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae)
Effects of six pitfall trap preservatives (5% acetic acid solution, distilled water, 70% ethanol, 50% ethylene glycol solution, 50% propylene glycol solution, and 10% saline solution) on collections of carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were studied in a west-central Illinois deciduous forest from May to October 2005. A total of 819 carabids, representing 33 species and 19 genera, were collected. Saline produced significantly fewer captures than did acetic acid, ethanol, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol, while distilled water produced significantly fewer captures than did acetic acid. Significant associations between numbers of captures and treatment were seen in four species: Amphasia interstitialis (Say), Calathus opaculus LeConte, Chlaenius nemoralis Say, and Cyclotrachelus sodalis (LeConte). Results of this study suggest that type of preservative used can have substantial effects on abundance and species composition of carabids collected in pitfall traps
Decolouring bloodmeal: Consumption and potential recycling of peracetic acid
A method of deodorizing and decolouring bloodmeal using an equilibrium mixture of peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, acetic acid and water has been developed to improve its marketability as a source of protein for bioplastics.
The objective of this study was to determine what quantity of peracetic acid is required to give reasonable bleaching of the bloodmeal and determine whether there is potential for the wastewater to be recycled. This was carried out by measuring the quantity of chemical species in the initial equilibrium mixture and the resulting wastewater upon bleaching using volumetric analysis. Bleaching efficacy was determined after exposing 100 g bloodmeal to 1.1, 2.5, 3.6, 4.5 and 5.6 wt% peracetic acid solutions as either 300 g total solution or a constant molar equivalent of 2.2 mmol peracetic acid/g bloodmeal and using a chromameter to measure colour change.
Addition of 300 g 5.6 wt% peracetic acid solution resulted in effective bleaching. This represented a ratio of 2.20 mmol peracetic acid/g bloodmeal of which 1.4 mmol peracetic acid/g bloodmeal was consumed (63%). If 300 g 300 g of <2.5 wt% solution is added such that there is still 2.2 mmol peracetic acid/g bloodmeal, bleaching is still insufficient.
These results suggest that an excess of peracetic is required for bleaching to occur, and that its concentration is paramount to bleaching efficacy. Due to the excess of peracetic acid used in the bleaching process, there is potential for wastewater recycling to be carried out provided that the wastewater is not diluted
Recrystallized parylene as a mask for silicon chemical etching

parylene as masking material for silicon chemical etch.
Recrystallized parylene was obtained by melting parylene C at
350°C for 2 hours. The masking ability of recrystallized parylene
was tested in HNA (hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid and acetic acid)
solution of various ratios, KOH (potassium hydroxide) solution
and TMAH (tetramethylammonium hydroxide) at different
temperatures and concentrations. It is found that interface
between parylene and the substrate can be attacked, which
results in undercuts. Otherwise, recrystallized parylene exhibited
good adhesion to silicon, complete protection of unexposed silicon
and silicon etching rates comparable to literature data

Equimolar quantities of an aromatic diamine and an aromatic dianhydride were reacted in a solvent medium to form a polyamic acid solution. A metal ion containing additive was added to the solution. Examples of this additive are: TbCl3, DyCl3, ErCl3, TmCl3, Al(C5H7O2)3, and Er2S3. The polyamic acid solution was imidized and is combined with the article to form the assembly

mole fraction range at T = 298.15 K. Based on the obtained
data, the effect of base–acid properties of water–
methanol mixtures on the solution enthalpy of cyclic ethers
in these mixtures has been analyzed. The solution enthalpy
of cyclic ethers depends on acid properties of water–
methanol mixtures in the range of high and medium water
