Scaling Up Climate Action to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

    Get PDF
In 2015, UNDP released its first infographic report that presented the breadth and depth of our support on climate change over the past two decades. That report emphasized successes and noted the opportunities that climate action presents for countries as they transition their economies towards zero-carbon and climate-resilient sustainable development. This year, as countries begin to take concrete action to deliver on their national climate goals, we are pleased to release an updated report of UNDP's climate change work. New, in this report, is a special focus on the linkages between climate change and sustainable development. Specifically, the report highlights the importance of climate action in delivering on the SDGs and provides examples of UNDP's on-going work on the ground towards this end. The report also presents UNDP's commitment to scale up climate change action in order to deliver on the ambitious agenda that countries agreed to in 2015." – Magdy Martinez-Solima

    Get PDF
This report was written with the primary intention of helping to educate entrepreneurs and growth company leaders with respect to the variety and scale of capital sources currently available in the State. It is not uncommon for those seeking to enter the capital markets as an entrepreneur to possess a limited understanding of where capital can be found. This knowledge gap leads to a level of perceived risk uncertainty that inhibits company formation and growth. This report is not intended to instruct entrepreneurs in the skills required to secure funding, rather it is intended as a catalog of source data to enlighten as to the many different types of capital available. This report is also intended for policy makers and those who work to support the development of a thriving growth company ecosystem in the State. This includes the sponsors of this report who seek to find new ways to bring together education and resources to enhance the ability of those who choose to build their companies in Oregon. This report can serve as a baseline of quantitative data that may help everyone to better understand where we are as a State now, with respect to the key ingredient of growth capital, and help us measure our progress and improvements over time

Integrating Islamic Fintech into Islamic Social Finance to Revive the Going Concern of MSMEs in the COVID-19 Era

    Get PDF
This study seeks to propose a model that integrates Islamic social finance and Islamic fintech to revive MSMEs' going concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. The study applies content analysis and a multidisciplinary literature review. This study proposes a model that integrates Islamic social finance instruments (such as zakat [Islamic compulsory tax], waqf [Islamic endowment], Islamic microfinance and sadaqat [voluntary charity]) and Islamic fintech platforms (P2P and crowdfunding) that could enable MSMEs to obtain funds to revitalize their going concerns by engaging in various Islamic-based contracts, such as musharakah (equity partnership), murabahah (the cost-plus sale contract), mudarabah (trust partnership), ijarah (lease contract), musharakah mutanaqisah (diminishing equity partnership), qard al-hasan (free interest loan), salam (forward financing transaction), etc. The provision of adequate finance using the proposed integrated model is expected to revitalize the MSMEs' going concerns, which can contribute to the country's economic growth and development. Despite the study's contribution by inventing an Islamic-based model for reviving the MSMEs' going concerns in Nigeria, it is conceptual without empirical validation. Hence, future studies should empirically explore the feasibility of the proposed integrated model. The implications of the findings indicate the need to provide motivational regulations for establishing Islamic fintech companies. There is also a need to provide effective technological applications that ensure the selection of only eligible beneficiaries

Islamic finance and Sustainable Development Goals. A bibliometric analysis from 2000 to 2021

    Get PDF
The aim of this research is to provide, through a bibliometric analysis of the last 21 years of thematic literature, an overview on the contribution of sustainable development goals (SDGs) to the discussion in the field of Islamic finance. A bibliometric method has been used to analyze the characteristics, citation patterns and content of 15 documents published in international academic journals, books review and chapters, editorial material and proceedings papers. Considering the findings, the analysis has shown that there is an enormous gap on that field, with a few works on the topic with an impact on research. Through the analysis of the papers, it emerges that qualitative method is the most used method to demonstrate the link between Islamic finance and its relationship in the achievement of sustainable development goals. The research also shows that there is an increase on the academic interest on the topic only in the last four years. Research limitations/implications – The study highlights a limitation, related to the adoption of the bibliometric method. This is due to the fact that databases include only part of the scientific papers and not all world’s sources. However, WOS database, the one adopted for the research, is the world’s most complete index even if it is not complete at all. On the other hand, to have a wider landscape of knowledge on the field of research, they have been considered all kind of sources: books review, chapters, papers published in international and academic journals, editorial materials, reviews and proceedings papers. Originality/value – This research shows the initial attention of the academic world toward the relation between Islamic finance and Sustainable Development Goals, however underlying that this contribution is not systematically interpreted by the different stakeholders and in the different countries. The bibliometric analysis of the literature puts Islamic finance and Sustainable Development Goals in relation but contemporarily indicates that more efforts need to be done in order to enhance this bond both from an academical and a practical point of view. Therefore, with the intention of mapping all the studies that have been done in this regard, the study analyzes how research on the relationship between Islamic finance and social development goals has been addressed, confirm with its qualitative approach the link between Islamic finance and social impact

An integrative literature review of social entrepreneurship research: mapping the literature and future research directions

    Get PDF
This article maps existing research from 5,874 scholarly publications on social entrepreneurship (SE) utilizing scientometrics. The mapping indicates a taxonomy of five clusters: (a) the nature of SE, (b) policy implications and employment in relation to SE, (c) SE in communities and health, (d) SE personality traits, and (e) SE education. We complement the scientometric analysis with a systematic literature review of publications on SE in the Financial Times 50 list (FT50) and Business & Society and propose a multistage, multilevel framework that highlights the clusters of existing research on SE based on their stage and level of analysis. This review study also helps outline a set of future research directions, including studies examining (a) the process stage at the micro-level and macro-level, (b) linkages across levels and stages, (c) linkages across stages over time or longitudinal studies, (d) SE in resource-constrained environments, (e) technological advancement and its impact on SE, (f) the types of social enterprises and their outcomes, and (g) various emerging topics in SE

Crowdfunding and Sustainable Development: a good match?

    Get PDF
This dissertation sets out to explore the role of crowdfunding in promoting sustainable development. It explores the role of specialized crowdfunding platforms in contributing to SD and under which conditions they can contribute to SD by considering both platform-related and founder/product-related factors. The dissertation employs two articles in order to explore this. The first is a conceptual paper based on a deductive reasoning approach which investigates a specific type of crowdfunding platforms (i.e. Islamic crowdfunding platforms) and their potential contribution to sustainable development through a conceptual typology. The second is an empirical paper exploring how crowdfunding could benefit developing countries in moving toward sustainable development. It investigates whether and how geographical factors (specifically the distinction between developed and developing countries) may have an impact also in a crowdfunding context, i.e., on the success of prosocial crowdfunding campaigns. The dissertation finds that crowdfunding contribution to sustainable development is not granted, and it is context-specific. Crowdfunding platforms play a critical role in contributing to sustainable development through the several actions and strategies they adopt. How the crowdfunding platform promotes itself and the type of crowd it targets could impact its sustainable development contribution and the sustainable development goals to which it contributes. Moreover, founder/product-related factors have an impact on the success of crowdfunding campaigns aiming to contribute to sustainable development. Donors’ decision-making behaviours could be influenced by home bias and the perceived credibility of the project initiator, as signalled by the country of origin. Thus, donors prefer allocating their donation budget to developed countries and, when allocating their budgets to developing countries, support project initiators from developed countries rather than from developing countries. Therefore, although crowdfunding possesses considerable potential to contribute to sustainable development, it must overcome numerous obstacles in order to become a genuine driving force for sustainability. The dissertation contributes to the literature in various capacities. Firstly, it contributes to the literature which investigates the innovation potential of CF in contributing to SD, to the literature on CF literature and geography, as well as to charitable-giving literature in the online context. Second, it provides a typology for Islamic crowdfunding platforms to understand the role of these platforms in contributing to sustainable development, which could help policymakers and international development actors to make more informed decisions about which type of Islamic crowdfunding platforms they should regulate and/or support. Finally, it shows the challenges of specialised crowdfunding platforms in contributing to sustainable development in developing countries and the role of geography in the success of prosocial crowdfunding campaigns

Feasibility of Zakat-based Crowdfunding for Marginalized Farmers in Bangladesh

    Get PDF
The arrangement of funds and financing for the agriculture sector in Bangladesh is still considered in crisis that is coupled with concurrent uncertain situations like population growth and natural disasters. Therefore, specific financial terms such as Zakat that are based on and practiced in Islam, the religious origination of the major-ity of Bangladeshi, at the same time highly appreciated and carried out by other countries are found well complementary to agricultural project financing. The pur-pose of this study is to explore the feasibility of using zakat-based crowdfunding as a means of supporting marginalized farmers in Bangladesh. This study employs a case study approach, using secondary data sources to conduct a thematic analysis of za-kat-based crowdfunding for marginalized farmers. The findings of the study indicate that zakat-based crowdfunding can be a viable solution to support marginalized farmers in Bangladesh. The relevance of the study is in place due to the urgency to solve the problems of agricultural financing in Bangladesh. The study recommends the establishment of a zakat-based crowdfunding platform that caters specifically to the needs of marginalized farmers in Bangladesh. However, the study also identifies some limitations, such as the lack of primary data and the context of generalizability. Despite these limitations, the study concludes that zakat-based crowdfunding can effectively support marginalized farmers in Bangladesh, and further research in this area is warranted
