    Developing front-end Web 2.0 technologies to access services, content and things in the future Internet

    The future Internet is expected to be composed of a mesh of interoperable web services accessible from all over the web. This approach has not yet caught on since global user?service interaction is still an open issue. This paper states one vision with regard to next-generation front-end Web 2.0 technology that will enable integrated access to services, contents and things in the future Internet. In this paper, we illustrate how front-ends that wrap traditional services and resources can be tailored to the needs of end users, converting end users into prosumers (creators and consumers of service-based applications). To do this, we propose an architecture that end users without programming skills can use to create front-ends, consult catalogues of resources tailored to their needs, easily integrate and coordinate front-ends and create composite applications to orchestrate services in their back-end. The paper includes a case study illustrating that current user-centred web development tools are at a very early stage of evolution. We provide statistical data on how the proposed architecture improves these tools. This paper is based on research conducted by the Service Front End (SFE) Open Alliance initiative

    Stressing the Boundaries of Mobile Accessibility

    Mobile devices gather the communication capabilities as no other gadget. Plus, they now comprise a wider set of applications while still maintaining reduced size and weight. They have started to include accessibility features that enable the inclusion of disabled people. However, these inclusive efforts still fall short considering the possibilities of such devices. This is mainly due to the lack of interoperability and extensibility of current mobile operating systems (OS). In this paper, we present a case study of a multi-impaired person where access to basic mobile applications was provided in an applicational basis. We outline the main flaws in current mobile OS and suggest how these could further empower developers to provide accessibility components.     Weaving Lighthouses and Stitching Stories: Blind and Visually Impaired People Designing E-textiles

    We describe our experience of working with blind and visually impaired people to create interactive art objects that are personal to them, through a participatory making process using electronic textiles (e-textiles) and hands-on crafting techniques. The research addresses both the practical considerations about how to structure hands-on making workshops in a way which is accessible to participants of varying experience and abilities, and how effective the approach was in enabling participants to tell their own stories and feel in control of the design and making process. The results of our analysis is the offering of insights in how to run e-textile making sessions in such a way for them to be more accessible and inclusive to a wider community of participants

    Adapting e-learning and learning services for people with disabilities

    Providing learning materials and support services that are adapted to the needs of individuals has the potential to enable learners to obtain maximal benefit from university level studies. This paper describes EU4ALL project which has been exploring how to present customized learning materials and services for people with disabilities. A number of the technical components of the EU4ALL framework are described. This is followed with a brief description of prototype implementations. This is then followed by a discussion of a number of research directions that may enhance the adaptability, usability and accessibility of information and support systems can be used and consumed by a diverse user population

    The accessibility of administrative processes: Assessing the impacts on students in higher education

    Administrative processes that need to be completed to maintain a basic standard of living, to study, or to attain employment, are perceived to create burdens for disabled people. The navigation of information, forms, communications, and assessments to achieve a particular goal raises diverse accessibility issues. In this paper we explore the different types of impacts these processes have on disabled university students. We begin by surveying literature that highlights the systemic characteristics of administrative burdens and barriers for disabled people. We then describe how a participatory research exercise with students led to the development of a survey on these issues. This was completed by 104 respondents with a diverse range of declared disabilities. This provides evidence for a range of impacts, and understanding of the perceived level of challenge of commonly experienced processes. The most common negative impact reported was on stress levels. Other commonly reported impacts include exacerbation of existing conditions, time lost from study, and instances where support was not available in a timely fashion. Processes to apply for disability-related support were more commonly challenging than other types of processes. We use this research to suggest directions for improving accessibility and empowerment in this space

    This work-in-progress paper introduces an interface for the interactive visual exploration of the context of queries using the ArticleFirst database, a product of OCLC. We describe a workflow which allows the user to browse live entities associated with 65 million articles. In the on-line interface, each query leads to a specific network representation of the most prevailing entities: topics (words), authors, journals and Dewey decimal classes linked to the set of terms in the query. This network represents the context of a query. Each of the network nodes is clickable: by clicking through, a user traverses a large space of articles along dimensions of authors, journals, Dewey classes and words simultaneously. We present different use cases of such an interface.     Supporting Collaborative Multi-User Interactions in a Video Surveillance Application Using Microsoft Tabletop Surface

    This report examines the progressing exploration done on my chosen subject, which is A Multi-touch Interface in a Video Surveillance System. It discusses method of early prototype interacting with security surveillance footage using natural user interfaces instead of traditional mouse and keyboard interaction. Current project is an evidence of idea on exhibiting that multi-touch interfaces are helpful in a video surveillance system to specifically control the surveillance videos, both of the live or of recorded. In case of any occurrence, this proposed system of interaction may require the user to spend an extra time amounts time obtaining circumstantial and location awareness, which is counter-beneficial. The framework proposed in this paper show how a multi-touch screen and natural interaction can empower the surveillance observing station users to rapidly recognize the area of a security camera and proficiently react to an occurrence. One of the main objective of this project is to engage more than 1 user to perform moving, scaling, rotating ,highlighting and recording on a surveillance video in the meantime, particularly during emergency periods. Furthermore, the scope of study for this project is to improve user collaborative interactions on Microsoft tabletop surface .A methodology was developed based upon a combination of the available literature and the experiences of the authors, who are actively involved with the development of multi-user interactions. This will cover many parts such as surveys, data gathering from respective Subject-Matter Experts, focal points, and analyzing information. It is intended to have a Surveillance application with user friendly collaborative touch on surface and eye-catching interface to reflect the quick paced nature of today's correspondences and better advertise its new activities and accessible assets. The future improvements and plans have been recommended and discussed in the recommendations section. Up to now, this research report has been run for twelve (12) weeks and going to be continued running for sixteen (16) weeks with a specific end goal to attain project primary objectives
