Seeking alcohol information on the Internet
It has been argued that people may be more willing to seek potentially threatening information on the Internet than they would in âreal lifeâ (Joinson and Banyard, 2002). For alcohol drinkers, potentially threatening information includes diagnostic information on the amount they drink, and information about the negative effects of alcohol consumption. In the present study, participants with varying levels of alcohol intake and plans for change chose four alcohol-related articles to read (from twelve) using either the world-wide web (WWW) or pen and paper. Results showed that drinkers not currently reducing their drinking were more likely to seek diagnostic, potentially threatening anti-drinking information via the WWW compared to when seeking paper-based information. Drinkers either contemplating or engaging in efforts to reduce their drinking sought pro-drinking information on the WWW, and anti-drinking information when using pen and paper. The potential role of the Internet, and perceived anonymity, in health promotion is discussed
Extragalactic Cepheid database
We present in this paper an exhaustive compilation of all published data of
extragalactic Cepheids. We have checked every light curve in order to
characterize the different types of Cepheid and detect potential overtone
pulsators, or to estimate the quality of the data. This compilation of about
3000 photometric measurements will constitute a very useful tool for
astronomers involved for instance in the extragalactic distance scale.Comment: Updated version of this database is now available through WWW at
http://www-obs.univ-lyon1.fr/~planoix/ECD/ . 1321 Cepheids located in 39
galaxies make up the base at the moment. One can also plot PL-relations and
compute distance moduli based on Hipparcos PL-relation
How to find a Morepork
In a previous blog (https://www.2040.co.nz/blogs/news/first-morepork-automatically-identified), you may have read about how I started down the road of automatically detecting morepork calls. Since then Iâve made some further progress and thought Iâd share the journey so far with you
Temperatures of Exploding Nuclei
Breakup temperatures in central collisions of 197Au + 197Au at bombarding
energies E/A = 50 to 200 MeV were determined with two methods. Isotope
temperatures, deduced from double ratios of hydrogen, helium, and lithium
isotopic yields, increase monotonically with bombarding energy from 5 MeV to 12
MeV, in qualitative agreement with a scenario of chemical freeze-out after
adiabatic expansion. Excited-state temperatures, derived from yield ratios of
states in 4He, 5Li, 6Li, and 8Be, are about 5 MeV, independent of the
projectile energy, and seem to reflect the internal temperature of fragments at
their final separation from the system.

GIDS: Global Interlinked Data Store
This paper introduces the Global Interlinked Data Store1 (GIDS), a technique to support the easy creation and retrieval of interlinked semantic data within a web-scale distributed network environment such as the World Wide Web (WWW). The GIDS enables the network to be treated as a data store without worrying about files, databases or other traditional data storage concerns. Data created on the network can be subsequently accessed and navigated by end users and software agents alike. The GIDS proposes a novel three-stage data storage process which enables the data to be stored in up to three contextually relevant locations to enhance subsequent retrieval opportunities. We believe that the capability offered by the GIDS will be of significant use to rapidly formed diverse coalitions who wish to communicate and exchange semantic data in a large network environment such as the WWW
Strange Quark Mass from Pseudoscalar Sum Rule with O(alpha_s^4) Accuracy
We include the new, five-loop, O(alpha_s^4) correction into the QCD sum rule
used for the s-quark mass determination. The pseudoscalar Borel sum rule is
taken as a study case. The OPE for the correlation function with N^4LO,
O(alpha_s^4) accuracy in the perturbative part, and with dimension <= 6
operators reveals a good convergence. We observe a significant improvement of
stability of the sum rule with respect to the variation of the renormalization
scale after including the O(alpha_s^4) correction. We obtain the interval m_s(2
GeV)=105 \pm 6 \pm 7 MeV, which exhibits about 2 MeV increase of the central
value, if the O(alpha_s^4) terms are removed.Comment: Few misprints corrected, version to appear in European Physics

Consumer-Oriented Electronic Commerce on the World Wide Web: A Comparison of the U.S. and Japanese Practices
Internetâs World Wide Web (WWW) is viewed as a strategic information technology with the potential to change the rules by which organizations conduct business as it provides new means of advertisement, sales, customer services, logistics, and business communications. Another important network application phenomenon is electronic commerce (EC). Although WWW is a worldwide application by definition, little is known about the profiles of EC activities on the WWW around the world. In this environment, this study attempts to shed light on understanding EC and the WWW and conducts research, as an example of phenomena surrounding them, on consumer-oriented EC on the WWW comparing the U.S. and Japanese practices
