    A speculative execution approach to provide semantically aware contention management for concurrent systems

    PhD ThesisMost modern platforms offer ample potention for parallel execution of concurrent programs yet concurrency control is required to exploit parallelism while maintaining program correctness. Pessimistic con- currency control featuring blocking synchronization and mutual ex- clusion, has given way to transactional memory, which allows the composition of concurrent code in a manner more intuitive for the application programmer. An important component in any transactional memory technique however is the policy for resolving conflicts on shared data, commonly referred to as the contention management policy. In this thesis, a Universal Construction is described which provides contention management for software transactional memory. The technique differs from existing approaches given that multiple execution paths are explored speculatively and in parallel. In the resolution of conflicts by state space exploration, we demonstrate that both concur- rent conflicts and semantic conflicts can be solved, promoting multi- threaded program progression. We de ne a model of computation called Many Systems, which defines the execution of concurrent threads as a state space management problem. An implementation is then presented based on concepts from the model, and we extend the implementation to incorporate nested transactions. Results are provided which compare the performance of our approach with an established contention management policy, under varying degrees of concurrent and semantic conflicts. Finally, we provide performance results from a number of search strategies, when nested transactions are introduced

    Crafting Concurrent Data Structures

    Concurrent data structures lie at the heart of modern parallel programs. The design and implementation of concurrent data structures can be challenging due to the demand for good performance (low latency and high scalability) and strong progress guarantees. In this dissertation, we enrich the knowledge of concurrent data structure design by proposing new implementations, as well as general techniques to improve the performance of existing ones.The first part of the dissertation present an unordered linked list implementation that supports nonblocking insert, remove, and lookup operations. The algorithm is based on a novel ``enlist\u27\u27 technique that greatly simplifies the task of achieving wait-freedom. The value of our technique is also demonstrated in the creation of other wait-free data structures such as stacks and hash tables.The second data structure presented is a nonblocking hash table implementation which solves a long-standing design challenge by permitting the hash table to dynamically adjust its size in a nonblocking manner. Additionally, our hash table offers strong theoretical properties such as supporting unbounded memory. In our algorithm, we introduce a new ``freezable set\u27\u27 abstraction which allows us to achieve atomic migration of keys during a resize. The freezable set abstraction also enables highly efficient implementations which maximally exploit the processor cache locality. In experiments, we found our lock-free hash table performs consistently better than state-of-the-art implementations, such as the split-ordered list.The third data structure we present is a concurrent priority queue called the ``mound\u27\u27. Our implementations include nonblocking and lock-based variants. The mound employs randomization to reduce contention on concurrent insert operations, and decomposes a remove operation into smaller atomic operations so that multiple remove operations can execute in parallel within a pipeline. In experiments, we show that the mound can provide excellent latency at low thread counts.Lastly, we discuss how hardware transactional memory (HTM) can be used to accelerate existing nonblocking concurrent data structure implementations. We propose optimization techniques that can significantly improve the performance (1.5x to 3x speedups) of a variety of important concurrent data structures, such as binary search trees and hash tables. The optimizations also preserve the strong progress guarantees of the original implementations

Voicing the images over, we mobilize for action, dismantle institutional structures and generally speaking mix gate-keeping with data-dating, thus contributing to the overall change of world's cultural climate - one of bricks, clicks and flicks.     The functional requirements and detailed specifications for the Input/Output (I/O) Systems Services of the Advanced Information Processing System (AIPS) are discussed. The introductory section is provided to outline the overall architecture and functional requirements of the AIPS system. Section 1.1 gives a brief overview of the AIPS architecture as well as a detailed description of the AIPS fault tolerant network architecture, while section 1.2 provides an introduction to the AIPS systems software. Sections 2 and 3 describe the functional requirements and design and detailed specifications of the I/O User Interface and Communications Management modules of the I/O System Services, respectively. Section 4 illustrates the use of the I/O System Services, while Section 5 concludes with a summary of results and suggestions for future work in this area
