Mediating between AI and highly specialized users
We report part of the design experience gained in X-Media, a system for knowledge management and sharing. Consolidated techniques of interaction design (scenario-based design) had to be revisited to capture the richness and complexity of intelligent interactive systems. We show that the design of intelligent systems requires methodologies (faceted scenarios) that support the investigation of intelligent features and usability factors simultaneously. Interaction designers become mediators between intelligent technology and users, and have to facilitate reciprocal understanding
A Boxology of Design Patterns for Hybrid Learning and Reasoning Systems
We propose a set of compositional design patterns to describe a large variety
of systems that combine statistical techniques from machine learning with
symbolic techniques from knowledge representation. As in other areas of
computer science (knowledge engineering, software engineering, ontology
engineering, process mining and others), such design patterns help to
systematize the literature, clarify which combinations of techniques serve
which purposes, and encourage re-use of software components. We have validated
our set of compositional design patterns against a large body of recent

Common Visual Representations as a Source for Misconceptions of Preservice Teachers in a Geometry Connection Course
In this paper, we demonstrate how atypical visual representations of a triangle, square or a parallelogram may hinder students’ understanding of a median and altitude. We analyze responses and reasoning given by 16 preservice middle school teachers in a Geometry Connection class. Particularly, the data were garnered from three specific questions posed on a cumulative final exam, which focused on computing and comparing areas of parallelograms, and triangles represented by atypical images. We use the notions of concept image and concept definition as our theoretical framework for an analysis of the students’ responses. Our findings have implication on how typical images can impact students’ cognitive process and their concept image. We provide a number of suggestions that can foster conceptualization of the notions of median and altitude in a triangle that can be realized in an enacted lesson
Towards a more natural and intelligent interface with embodied conversation agent
Conversational agent also known as chatterbots are computer programs which are designed to converse like a human as much as their intelligent allows. In many ways, they are the embodiment of Turing's vision. The ability for computers to converse with human users using natural language would arguably increase their usefulness. Recent advances in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in general have advances this field in realizing the vision of a more humanoid interactive system. This paper presents and discusses the use of embodied conversation agent (ECA) for the imitation games. This paper also presents the technical design of our ECA and its performance. On Centroidal Dynamics and Integrability of Average Angular Velocity
In the literature on robotics and multibody dynamics, the concept of average
angular velocity has received considerable attention in recent years. We
address the question of whether the average angular velocity defines an
orientation framethat depends only on the current robot configuration and
provide a simple algebraic condition to check whether this holds. In the
language of geometric mechanics, this condition corresponds to requiring the
flatness of the mechanical connection associated to the robotic system. Here,
however, we provide both a reinterpretation and a proof of this result
accessible to readers with a background in rigid body kinematics and multibody
dynamics but not necessarily acquainted with differential geometry, still
providing precise links to the geometric mechanics literature. This should help
spreading the algebraic condition beyond the scope of geometric
mechanics,contributing to a proper utilization and understanding of the concept

Autonomy Operating System for UAVs: Pilot-in-a-Box
The Autonomy Operating System (AOS) is an open flight software platform with Artificial Intelligence for smart UAVs. It is built to be extendable with new apps, similar to smartphones, to enable an expanding set of missions and capabilities. AOS has as its foundations NASAs core flight executive and core flight software (cFEcFS). Pilot-in-a-Box (PIB) is an expanding collection of interacting AOS apps that provide the knowledge and intelligence onboard a UAV to safely and autonomously fly in the National Air Space, eventually without a remote human ground crew. Longer-term, the goal of PIB is to provide the capability for pilotless air vehicles such as air taxis that will be key for new transportation concepts such as mobility-on-demand. PIB provides the procedural knowledge, situational awareness, and anticipatory planning (thinking ahead of the plane) that comprises pilot competencies. These competencies together with a natural language interface will enable Pilot-in-a-Box to dialogue directly with Air Traffic Management from takeoff through landing.
