A strategy for array management in local memory
Projet CHLOEOne major point in loop restructuring for data locality optimization is the choice and the evaluation of a data locality criteria. We show in this paper how to compute approximations of window sets defined by Gannon, Jalby and Gallivan (the window associated with an iteration i describes the "active" portion of array : elements which have already been referenced before iteration i and which will be referenced after iteration i. Such a notion is extremely useful for data localization since it identifies the portions of arrays which are worth keeping in local memory because they are going to be referenced later. The computation of these window approximations can be performed symbolically at compile time and generates simple geometrical shape that simplifies the management of the data transfers. This allow to derive a global strategy of data management for local memories. . . Moreover, the effects of loop transformations fit naturally in the geometrical framework we use for the calculations. The determination of window approximations is studied both from a theoretical and a computational point of view and examples of applications are given
Cache Equalizer: A Cache Pressure Aware Block Placement Scheme for Large-Scale Chip Multiprocessors
This paper describes Cache Equalizer (CE), a novel distributed cache management scheme for large scale chip multiprocessors (CMPs). Our work is motivated by large asymmetry in cache sets usages. CE decouples the physical locations of cache blocks from their addresses for the sake of reducing misses caused by destructive interferences. Temporal pressure at the on-chip last-level cache, is continuously collected at a group (comprised of cache sets) granularity, and periodically recorded at the memory controller to guide the placement process. An incoming block is consequently placed at a cache group that exhibits the minimum pressure. CE provides Quality of Service (QoS) by robustly offering better performance than the baseline shared NUCA cache. Simulation results using a full-system simulator demonstrate that CE outperforms shared NUCA caches by an average of 15.5% and by as much as 28.5% for the benchmark programs we examined. Furthermore, evaluations manifested the outperformance of CE versus related CMP cache designs
A Survey on Array Storage, Query Languages, and Systems
Since scientific investigation is one of the most important providers of
massive amounts of ordered data, there is a renewed interest in array data
processing in the context of Big Data. To the best of our knowledge, a unified
resource that summarizes and analyzes array processing research over its long
existence is currently missing. In this survey, we provide a guide for past,
present, and future research in array processing. The survey is organized along
three main topics. Array storage discusses all the aspects related to array
partitioning into chunks. The identification of a reduced set of array
operators to form the foundation for an array query language is analyzed across
multiple such proposals. Lastly, we survey real systems for array processing.
The result is a thorough survey on array data storage and processing that
should be consulted by anyone interested in this research topic, independent of
experience level. The survey is not complete though. We greatly appreciate
pointers towards any work we might have forgotten to mention.Comment: 44 page
Cache-aware Parallel Programming for Manycore Processors
With rapidly evolving technology, multicore and manycore processors have
emerged as promising architectures to benefit from increasing transistor
numbers. The transition towards these parallel architectures makes today an
exciting time to investigate challenges in parallel computing. The TILEPro64 is
a manycore accelerator, composed of 64 tiles interconnected via multiple 8x8
mesh networks. It contains per-tile caches and supports cache-coherent shared
memory by default. In this paper we present a programming technique to take
advantages of distributed caching facilities in manycore processors. However,
unlike other work in this area, our approach does not use architecture-specific
libraries. Instead, we provide the programmer with a novel technique on how to
program future Non-Uniform Cache Architecture (NUCA) manycore systems, bearing
in mind their caching organisation. We show that our localised programming
approach can result in a significant improvement of the parallelisation

Formal Representation of the SS-DB Benchmark and Experimental Evaluation in EXTASCID
Evaluating the performance of scientific data processing systems is a
difficult task considering the plethora of application-specific solutions
available in this landscape and the lack of a generally-accepted benchmark. The
dual structure of scientific data coupled with the complex nature of processing
complicate the evaluation procedure further. SS-DB is the first attempt to
define a general benchmark for complex scientific processing over raw and
derived data. It fails to draw sufficient attention though because of the
ambiguous plain language specification and the extraordinary SciDB results. In
this paper, we remedy the shortcomings of the original SS-DB specification by
providing a formal representation in terms of ArrayQL algebra operators and
ArrayQL/SciQL constructs. These are the first formal representations of the
SS-DB benchmark. Starting from the formal representation, we give a reference
implementation and present benchmark results in EXTASCID, a novel system for
scientific data processing. EXTASCID is complete in providing native support
both for array and relational data and extensible in executing any user code
inside the system by the means of a configurable metaoperator. These features
result in an order of magnitude improvement over SciDB at data loading,
extracting derived data, and operations over derived data.Comment: 32 pages, 3 figure
GraphH: High Performance Big Graph Analytics in Small Clusters
It is common for real-world applications to analyze big graphs using
distributed graph processing systems. Popular in-memory systems require an
enormous amount of resources to handle big graphs. While several out-of-core
approaches have been proposed for processing big graphs on disk, the high disk
I/O overhead could significantly reduce performance. In this paper, we propose
GraphH to enable high-performance big graph analytics in small clusters.
Specifically, we design a two-stage graph partition scheme to evenly divide the
input graph into partitions, and propose a GAB (Gather-Apply-Broadcast)
computation model to make each worker process a partition in memory at a time.
We use an edge cache mechanism to reduce the disk I/O overhead, and design a
hybrid strategy to improve the communication performance. GraphH can
efficiently process big graphs in small clusters or even a single commodity
server. Extensive evaluations have shown that GraphH could be up to 7.8x faster
compared to popular in-memory systems, such as Pregel+ and PowerGraph when
processing generic graphs, and more than 100x faster than recently proposed
out-of-core systems, such as GraphD and Chaos when processing big graphs
The "MIND" Scalable PIM Architecture
MIND (Memory, Intelligence, and Network Device) is an advanced parallel computer architecture for high performance computing and scalable embedded processing. It is a
Processor-in-Memory (PIM) architecture integrating both DRAM bit cells and CMOS logic devices on the same silicon die. MIND is multicore with multiple memory/processor nodes on
each chip and supports global shared memory across systems of MIND components. MIND is distinguished from other PIM architectures in that it incorporates mechanisms for efficient support of a global parallel execution model based on the semantics of message-driven multithreaded split-transaction processing. MIND is designed to operate either in conjunction with other conventional microprocessors or in standalone arrays of like devices. It also incorporates mechanisms for fault tolerance, real time execution, and active power management. This paper describes the major elements and operational methods of the MIND
architecture
Gunrock: GPU Graph Analytics
For large-scale graph analytics on the GPU, the irregularity of data access
and control flow, and the complexity of programming GPUs, have presented two
significant challenges to developing a programmable high-performance graph
library. "Gunrock", our graph-processing system designed specifically for the
GPU, uses a high-level, bulk-synchronous, data-centric abstraction focused on
operations on a vertex or edge frontier. Gunrock achieves a balance between
performance and expressiveness by coupling high performance GPU computing
primitives and optimization strategies with a high-level programming model that
allows programmers to quickly develop new graph primitives with small code size
and minimal GPU programming knowledge. We characterize the performance of
various optimization strategies and evaluate Gunrock's overall performance on
different GPU architectures on a wide range of graph primitives that span from
traversal-based algorithms and ranking algorithms, to triangle counting and
bipartite-graph-based algorithms. The results show that on a single GPU,
Gunrock has on average at least an order of magnitude speedup over Boost and
PowerGraph, comparable performance to the fastest GPU hardwired primitives and
CPU shared-memory graph libraries such as Ligra and Galois, and better
