Prediction of Satellite Shadowing in Smart Cities with Application to IoT
The combination of satellite direct reception and terrestrial 5G infrastructure is essential
to guarantee coverage in satellite based-Internet of Things, mainly in smart cities where buildings
can cause high power losses. In this paper, we propose an accurate and fast graphical method for
predicting the satellite coverage in urban areas and SatCom on-the-move scenarios. The aim is to
provide information that could be useful in the IoT network planning process, e.g., in the decision of
how many terrestrial repeaters are really needed and where they should be placed. Experiments show
that the shadowed areas predicted by the method correspond almost perfectly with experimental
data measured from an Eutelsat satellite in the urban area of Barcelona.Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio de España TSI-020301-2009-3
Performance of SC-FDMA with diversity techniques over land mobile satellite channel
A Comprehensive Analysis of 5G Heterogeneous Cellular Systems operating over - Shadowed Fading Channels
Emerging cellular technologies such as those proposed for use in 5G
communications will accommodate a wide range of usage scenarios with diverse
link requirements. This will include the necessity to operate over a versatile
set of wireless channels ranging from indoor to outdoor, from line-of-sight
(LOS) to non-LOS, and from circularly symmetric scattering to environments
which promote the clustering of scattered multipath waves. Unfortunately, many
of the conventional fading models adopted in the literature to develop network
models lack the flexibility to account for such disparate signal propagation
mechanisms. To bridge the gap between theory and practical channels, we
consider - shadowed fading, which contains as special cases, the
majority of the linear fading models proposed in the open literature, including
Rayleigh, Rician, Nakagami-m, Nakagami-q, One-sided Gaussian, -,
-, and Rician shadowed to name but a few. In particular, we apply an
orthogonal expansion to represent the - shadowed fading
distribution as a simplified series expression. Then using the series
expressions with stochastic geometry, we propose an analytic framework to
evaluate the average of an arbitrary function of the SINR over -
shadowed fading channels. Using the proposed method, we evaluate the spectral
efficiency, moments of the SINR, bit error probability and outage probability
of a -tier HetNet with classes of BSs, differing in terms of the
transmit power, BS density, shadowing characteristics and small-scale fading.
Building upon these results, we provide important new insights into the network
performance of these emerging wireless applications while considering a diverse
range of fading conditions and link qualities
Wireless wideband DS-CDMA point-to-multipoint system for distance education services.
Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of Durban-Westville, 2001.A review of possible distance education services is given. These services range from
narrowband to broadband, from real to non-real time and from broadcast to fully interactive
services. The service target groups include the rural schools and communities who are
scattered in remote areas.
The performances of multiple access techniques, FDMA, TDMA and CDMA when in use for
the provision of point-to-multipoint multimedia services is compared. A hybrid of the satellite
and terrestrial access networks for the implementation of the distance education services is
presented.
The feasibility of implementing the proposed satellite network as part of the total network
using the FDMA technique is presented. The rest of the work done in the thesis concentrates
on the terrestrial network. The terrestrial part of the network is based on fixed cellular DS-CDMA
techniques.
The fixed cellular network's specifications, modeling and a discussion of the capacity, BER
performance, bandwidth requirements and coverage are presented. The link budget estimation
of the performance is given. Lastly a review of propagation characteristics for a terrestrial
rural environment and a review of DS-CDMA concepts are presented in the appendix
