The design and analysis of boundary data structures
The thesis is concerned with the efficient interrogation of CAD data. CAD data finds use in diverse range of applications which necessitates extension and integration of the CAD data base. By an exhaustive categorization of such application requirements and analysis of various CAD techniques, it is shown that boundary data structures are the most suitable in CAD, CAM and advanced robotic applications.
Several boundary data structures have been proposed since the classic Winged edge data structure, these aimed at reducing the storage requirement and increasing information retrieval speeds. In this thesis methodologies are developed which enable us to discover compact and fast access time schemes and analyze and fine tune for individual applications. We demonstrate how the application of the optimality concepts can lead us to the discovery of more efficient data structures than popular data structures. All the boundary data structures proposed to date have been based on the underlying assumption that all the data resides in main memory. We show that in an integrated CAD environment (characterized by virtual a memory environment or a data base environment), these data structures are inefficient in both storage and time. We propose a new data structure shaped like A which is the most compact as well as more efficient in access time, under certain conditions of real memory and virtual memory. Experiments reveal a paradoxical phenomenon: access time increases with storage, violating the classic law of storage vs. time.
Recently non-manifold boundary geometric modeling has become popular to meet the growing needs such as uniform treatment of wire frame, surface and solid modeling and design by features. We introduce a uniform terminology and notation to distinguish and critically analyze several non-manifold boundary data structures. It is hoped to fulfill the need for a ready reference for the design of efficient boundary data structures. The other aspects dealt with are the validity and conversion of Boundary data structures.
To verify the concepts developed, in practice, a whole suite of fast algorithms have been implemented for model manipulation, visualization and data conversion
From 3D Models to 3D Prints: an Overview of the Processing Pipeline
Due to the wide diffusion of 3D printing technologies, geometric algorithms
for Additive Manufacturing are being invented at an impressive speed. Each
single step, in particular along the Process Planning pipeline, can now count
on dozens of methods that prepare the 3D model for fabrication, while analysing
and optimizing geometry and machine instructions for various objectives. This
report provides a classification of this huge state of the art, and elicits the
relation between each single algorithm and a list of desirable objectives
during Process Planning. The objectives themselves are listed and discussed,
along with possible needs for tradeoffs. Additive Manufacturing technologies
are broadly categorized to explicitly relate classes of devices and supported
features. Finally, this report offers an analysis of the state of the art while
discussing open and challenging problems from both an academic and an

Shape theory and mathematical design of a general geometric kernel through regular stratified objects
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.This dissertation focuses on the mathematical design of a unified shape kernel for geometric computing, with possible applications to computer aided design (CAM) and manufacturing (CAM), solid geometric modelling, free-form modelling of curves and surfaces, feature-based modelling, finite element meshing, computer animation, etc.
The generality of such a unified shape kernel grounds on a shape theory for objects in some Euclidean space. Shape does not mean herein only geometry as usual in geometric modelling, but has been extended to other contexts, e. g. topology, homotopy, convexity theory, etc. This shape theory has enabled to make a shape analysis of the current geometric kernels. Significant deficiencies have been then identified in how these geometric kernels represent shapes from different applications.
This thesis concludes that it is possible to construct a general shape kernel capable of representing and manipulating general specifications of shape for objects even in higher-dimensional Euclidean spaces, regardless whether such objects are implicitly or parametrically defined, they have ‘incomplete boundaries’ or not, they are structured with more or less detail or subcomplexes, which design sequence has been followed in a modelling session, etc. For this end, the basic constituents of such a general geometric kernel, say a combinatorial data structure and respective Euler operators for n-dimensional regular stratified objects, have been introduced and discussed
Generative Mesh Modeling
Generative Modeling is an alternative approach for the description of three-dimensional shape. The basic idea is to represent a model not as usual by an agglomeration of geometric primitives (triangles, point clouds, NURBS patches), but by functions. The paradigm change from objects to operations allows for a procedural representation of procedural shapes, such as most man-made objects. Instead of storing only the result of a 3D construction, the construction process itself is stored in a model file. The generative approach opens truly new perspectives in many ways, among others also for 3D knowledge management. It permits for instance to resort to a repository of already solved modeling problems, in order to re-use this knowledge also in different, slightly varied situations. The construction knowledge can be collected in digital libraries containing domain-specific parametric modeling tools. A concrete realization of this approach is a new general description language for 3D models, the "Generative Modeling Language" GML. As a Turing-complete "shape programming language" it is a basis of existing, primitv based 3D model formats. Together with its Runtime engine the GML permits - to store highly complex 3D models in a compact form, - to evaluate the description within fractions of a second, - to adaptively tesselate and to interactively display the model, - and even to change the models high-level parameters at runtime.Die generative Modellierung ist ein alternativer Ansatz zur Beschreibung von dreidimensionaler Form. Zugrunde liegt die Idee, ein Modell nicht wie üblich durch eine Ansammlung geometrischer Primitive (Dreiecke, Punkte, NURBS-Patches) zu beschreiben, sondern durch Funktionen. Der Paradigmenwechsel von Objekten zu Geometrie-erzeugenden Operationen ermöglicht es, prozedurale Modelle auch prozedural zu repräsentieren. Statt das Resultat eines 3D-Konstruktionsprozesses zu speichern, kann so der Konstruktionsprozess selber repräsentiert werden. Der generative Ansatz eröffnet unter anderem gänzlich neue Perspektiven für das Wissensmanagement im 3D-Bereich. Er ermöglicht etwa, auf einen Fundus bereits gelöster Konstruktions-Aufgaben zurückzugreifen, um sie in ähnlichen, aber leicht variierten Situationen wiederverwenden zu können. Das Konstruktions-Wissen kann dazu in Form von Bibliotheken parametrisierter, Domänen-spezifischer Modellier-Werkzeuge gesammelt werden. Konkret wird dazu eine neue allgemeine Modell-Beschreibungs-Sprache vorgeschlagen, die "Generative Modeling Language" GML. Als Turing-mächtige "Programmiersprache für Form" stellt sie eine echte Verallgemeinerung existierender Primitiv-basierter 3D-Modellformate dar. Zusammen mit ihrer Runtime-Engine erlaubt die GML, - hochkomplexe 3D-Objekte extrem kompakt zu beschreiben, - die Beschreibung innerhalb von Sekundenbruchteilen auszuwerten, - das Modell adaptiv darzustellen und interaktiv zu betrachten, - und die Modell-Parameter interaktiv zu verändern
