A conceptual model for semantically-based e-government portals
Issues of semantic interoperability and service integration for e-government portals are the domain of interest of the present paper. We propose a Conceptual Model for One-Stop e-Government Portals based on the Semantic Web Service technology. We describe our research into building the three basic ontologies and their integration with standard ontologies. The result is a project-independent reusable model. At the same time, we outline a simple methodology for applying the proposed conceptual model into a specific scenario
Intersection schemas as a dataspace integration technique
This paper introduces the concept of Intersection Schemas in the field of heterogeneous data integration and dataspaces. We introduce a technique for incrementally integrating heterogeneous data sources by specifying semantic overlaps between sets of extensional schemas using bidirectional schema transformations, and automatically combining them into a global schema at each iteration of the integration process. We propose an incremental data integration methodology that uses this technique and that aims to reduce the amount of up-front effort required. Such approaches to data integration are often described as pay-as-you-go. A demonstrator of our technique is described, which utilizes a new graphical user tool implemented using the AutoMed
heterogeneous data integration system. A case study is also described, and our technique and integration methodology
are compared with a classical data integration strategy
BIM semantic-enrichment for built heritage representation
In the built heritage context, BIM has shown difficulties in representing and managing the large and complex knowledge related to non-geometrical aspects of the heritage. Within this scope, this paper focuses on a domain-specific semantic-enrichment of BIM methodology, aimed at fulfilling semantic representation requirements of built heritage through Semantic Web technologies. To develop this semantic-enriched BIM approach, this research relies on the integration of a BIM environment with a knowledge base created through information ontologies. The result is knowledge base system - and a prototypal platform - that enhances semantic representation capabilities of BIM application to architectural heritage processes. It solves the issue of knowledge formalization in cultural heritage informative models, favouring a deeper comprehension and interpretation of all the building aspects. Its open structure allows future research to customize, scale and adapt the knowledge base different typologies of artefacts and heritage activities
Lost in translation: data integration tools meet the Semantic Web (experiences from the Ondex project)
More information is now being published in machine processable form on the
web and, as de-facto distributed knowledge bases are materializing, partly
encouraged by the vision of the Semantic Web, the focus is shifting from the
publication of this information to its consumption. Platforms for data
integration, visualization and analysis that are based on a graph
representation of information appear first candidates to be consumers of
web-based information that is readily expressible as graphs. The question is
whether the adoption of these platforms to information available on the
Semantic Web requires some adaptation of their data structures and semantics.
Ondex is a network-based data integration, analysis and visualization platform
which has been developed in a Life Sciences context. A number of features,
including semantic annotation via ontologies and an attention to provenance and
evidence, make this an ideal candidate to consume Semantic Web information, as
well as a prototype for the application of network analysis tools in this
context. By analyzing the Ondex data structure and its usage, we have found a
set of discrepancies and errors arising from the semantic mismatch between a
procedural approach to network analysis and the implications of a web-based
representation of information. We report in the paper on the simple methodology
that we have adopted to conduct such analysis, and on issues that we have found
which may be relevant for a range of similar platformsComment: Presented at DEIT, Data Engineering and Internet Technology, 2011

Semantic-Driven e-Government: Application of Uschold and King Ontology Building Methodology for Semantic Ontology Models Development
Electronic government (e-government) has been one of the most active areas of
ontology development during the past six years. In e-government, ontologies are
being used to describe and specify e-government services (e-services) because
they enable easy composition, matching, mapping and merging of various
e-government services. More importantly, they also facilitate the semantic
integration and interoperability of e-government services. However, it is still
unclear in the current literature how an existing ontology building methodology
can be applied to develop semantic ontology models in a government service
domain. In this paper the Uschold and King ontology building methodology is
applied to develop semantic ontology models in a government service domain.
Firstly, the Uschold and King methodology is presented, discussed and applied
to build a government domain ontology. Secondly, the domain ontology is
evaluated for semantic consistency using its semi-formal representation in
Description Logic. Thirdly, an alignment of the domain ontology with the
Descriptive Ontology for Linguistic and Cognitive Engineering (DOLCE) upper
level ontology is drawn to allow its wider visibility and facilitate its
integration with existing metadata standard. Finally, the domain ontology is
formally written in Web Ontology Language (OWL) to enable its automatic
processing by computers. The study aims to provide direction for the
application of existing ontology building methodologies in the Semantic Web
development processes of e-government domain specific ontology models; which
would enable their repeatability in other e-government projects and strengthen
the adoption of semantic technologies in e-government.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figure
Knowledge-based life event model for e-government service integration with illustrative examples
The advancement of information and communications technology and web services offers an opportunity for e-government service integration, which can help improve the availability and quality of services offered. However, few of the potential service integration applications have been adopted by governments to increase the accessibility of and satisfaction with government services and information for citizens. Recently, the 'life event' concept was introduced as the core element of integrating complexity of service delivery to improve the efficiency and reusability of e-government services, web-based information management systems. In addition, a semantic web-based ontology is considered to be the most powerful conceptual approach for dealing with challenges associated with developing seamless systems in distributed environments. Among these challenges are interoperability, which can be loosely defined as the technical capability for interoperation. Despite the conceptual emergence of semantic web-based ontology for life events, the question remains of what methodology to use when designing a semantic web-based ontology for life events. This paper proposes a semantic web-based ontology model for life events for e-government service integration created using a methodology that implements the model using the ontology modelling tool Protégé and evaluates the model using Pellet Reasoner and the SPARQL query language. In addition, this model is illustrated by two examples, the Saudi Arabia King Abdullah Scholarship and Hafiz, to show the advantages of integrated systems compared with standalone systems. These examples show that the new model can effectively support the integration of standalone e-government services automatically so that citizens do not need to manually execute individual services. This can significantly improve the accessibility of e-government services and citizen's satisfaction. © 2014-IOS Press
Towards a new approach for enterprise integration : the semantic modeling approach
Manufacturing today has become a matter of the effective and efficient application of information technology and knowledge engineering. Manufacturing firms’ success depends to a great extent on information technology, which emphasizes the integration of the information systems used by a manufacturing enterprise. This integration is also called enterprise application integration (here the term application means information systems or software systems). The methodology for enterprise application integration, in particular enterprise application integration automation, has been studied for at least a decade; however, no satisfactory solution has been found. Enterprise application integration is becoming even more difficult due to the explosive growth of various information systems as a result of ever increasing competition in the software market. This thesis aims to provide a novel solution to enterprise application integration.
The semantic data model concept that evolved in database technology is revisited and applied to enterprise application integration. This has led to two novel ideas developed in this thesis. First, an ontology of an enterprise with five levels (following the data abstraction: generalization/specialization) is proposed and
represented using unified modeling language. Second, both the ontology for the enterprise functions and the ontology for the enterprise applications are modeled to allow automatic processing of information back and forth between these two domains. The approach with these novel ideas is called the enterprise semantic model approach.
The thesis presents a detailed description of the enterprise semantic model approach, including the fundamental rationale behind the enterprise semantic model, the ontology of enterprises with levels, and a systematic way towards the construction of a particular enterprise semantic model for a company. A case study is provided to illustrate how the approach works and to show the high potential of solving the existing problems within enterprise application integration
