From Big Data to Big Displays: High-Performance Visualization at Blue Brain
Blue Brain has pushed high-performance visualization (HPV) to complement its
HPC strategy since its inception in 2007. In 2011, this strategy has been
accelerated to develop innovative visualization solutions through increased
funding and strategic partnerships with other research institutions.
We present the key elements of this HPV ecosystem, which integrates C++
visualization applications with novel collaborative display systems. We
motivate how our strategy of transforming visualization engines into services
enables a variety of use cases, not only for the integration with high-fidelity
displays, but also to build service oriented architectures, to link into web

Hierarchical Event Descriptors (HED): Semi-Structured Tagging for Real-World Events in Large-Scale EEG.
Real-world brain imaging by EEG requires accurate annotation of complex subject-environment interactions in event-rich tasks and paradigms. This paper describes the evolution of the Hierarchical Event Descriptor (HED) system for systematically describing both laboratory and real-world events. HED version 2, first described here, provides the semantic capability of describing a variety of subject and environmental states. HED descriptions can include stimulus presentation events on screen or in virtual worlds, experimental or spontaneous events occurring in the real world environment, and events experienced via one or multiple sensory modalities. Furthermore, HED 2 can distinguish between the mere presence of an object and its actual (or putative) perception by a subject. Although the HED framework has implicit ontological and linked data representations, the user-interface for HED annotation is more intuitive than traditional ontological annotation. We believe that hiding the formal representations allows for a more user-friendly interface, making consistent, detailed tagging of experimental, and real-world events possible for research users. HED is extensible while retaining the advantages of having an enforced common core vocabulary. We have developed a collection of tools to support HED tag assignment and validation; these are available at hedtags.org. Review of simulating four classes of window materials for daylighting with non-standard BSDF using the simulation program Radiance
This review describes the currently available simulation models for window
material to calculate daylighting with the program "Radiance". The review is
based on four abstract and general classes of window materials, depending on
their scattering and redirecting properties (bidirectional scatter distribution
function, BSDF). It lists potential and limits of the older models and includes
the most recent additions to the software. All models are demonstrated using an
exemplary indoor scene and two typical sky conditions. It is intended as
clarification for applying window material models in project work or teaching.
The underlying algorithmic problems apply to all lighting simulation programs,
so the scenarios of materials and skies are applicable to other lighting
programs
LIGHT AND AFFECTS FROM A COMPARATIVE POINT OF VIEW
Light metaphors occurring in Chinese philosophy and Stoicism are of special interest for the unique ways they channel potentialities of the self. In this paper I apply ideas from cognitive linguistics to examine selected structural features of these metaphors. I also build on these ideas by presenting a framework regarding affects to assist in disclosing what is at stake for differing Chinese and Stoic technologies of the self. The paper adopts a high-level perspective to see these broad philosophical implications, interleaving discussions of Chinese philosophy (mainly views associated with Daoism), Stoicism (bringing into relief important differences from these views), and contemporary research on socially constructed affects. This triadic comparative approach aims to shed new light on some root assumptions built into the projects of self-cultivation that are at the core of Chinese and Stoic worldviews
Multi-Modal Perception for Selective Rendering
A major challenge in generating high-fidelity virtual environments (VEs) is to be able to provide realism at interactive rates. The high-fidelity simulation of light and sound is still unachievable in real-time as such physical accuracy is very computationally demanding. Only recently has visual perception been used in high-fidelity rendering to improve performance by a series of novel exploitations; to render parts of the scene that are not currently being attended to by the viewer at a much lower quality without the difference being perceived. This paper investigates the effect spatialised directional sound has on the visual attention of a user towards rendered images. These perceptual artefacts are utilised in selective rendering pipelines via the use of multi-modal maps. The multi-modal maps are tested through psychophysical experiments to examine their applicability to selective rendering algorithms, with a series of fixed cost rendering functions, and are found to perform significantly better than only using image saliency maps that are naively applied to multi-modal virtual environments
