    A parallel event system for large-scale cloud simulations in DISSECT-CF

    Discrete Event Simulation (DES) frameworks gained significant popularity to support and evaluate cloud computing environments. They support decision-making for complex scenarios, saving time and effort. The majority of these frameworks lack parallel execution. In spite being a sequential framework, DISSECT-CF introduced significant performance improvements when simulating Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds. Even with these improvements over the state of the art sequential simulators, there are several scenarios (e.g., large scale Internet of Things or serverless computing systems) which DISSECT-CF would not simulate in a timely fashion. To remedy such scenarios this paper introduces parallel execution to its most abstract subsystem: the event system. The new event subsystem detects when multiple events occur at a specific time instance of the simulation and decides to execute them either on a parallel or a sequential fashion. This decision is mainly based on the number of independent events and the expected workload of a particular event. In our evaluation, we focused exclusively on time management scenarios. While we did so, we ensured the behaviour of the events should be equivalent to realistic, larger-scale simulation scenarios. This allowed us to understand the effects of parallelism on the whole framework, while we also shown the gains of the new system compared to the old sequential one. With regards to scaling, we observed it to be proportional to the number of cores in the utilised SMP host

    The state of peer-to-peer network simulators

    Networking research often relies on simulation in order to test and evaluate new ideas. An important requirement of this process is that results must be reproducible so that other researchers can replicate, validate and extend existing work. We look at the landscape of simulators for research in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks by conducting a survey of a combined total of over 280 papers from before and after 2007 (the year of the last survey in this area), and comment on the large quantity of research using bespoke, closed-source simulators. We propose a set of criteria that P2P simulators should meet, and poll the P2P research community for their agreement. We aim to drive the community towards performing their experiments on simulators that allow for others to validate their results

    Distribution planning in a weather-dependent scenario with stochastic travel times: a simheuristics approach

    In real-life logistics, distribution plans might be affected by weather conditions (rain, snow, and fog), since they might have a significant effect on traveling times and, therefore, on total distribution costs. In this paper, the distribution problem is modeled as a multi-depot vehicle routing problem with stochastic traveling times. These traveling times are not only stochastic in nature but the specific probability distribution used to model them depends on the particular weather conditions on the delivery day. In order to solve the aforementioned problem, a simheuristic approach combining simulation within a biased-randomized heuristic framework is proposed. As the computational experiments will show, our simulation-optimization algorithm is able to provide high-quality solutions to this NP-hard problem in short computing times even for large-scale instances.     When should I use network emulation ?

    The design and development of a complex system requires an adequate methodology and efficient instrumental support in order to early detect and correct anomalies in the functional and non-functional properties of the tested protocols. Among the various tools used to provide experimental support for such developments, network emulation relies on real-time production of impairments on real traffic according to a communication model, either realistically or not. This paper aims at simply presenting to newcomers in network emulation (students, engineers, ...) basic principles and practices illustrated with a few commonly used tools. The motivation behind is to fill a gap in terms of introductory and pragmatic papers in this domain. The study particularly considers centralized approaches, allowing cheap and easy implementation in the context of research labs or industrial developments. In addition, an architectural model for emulation systems is proposed, defining three complementary levels, namely hardware, impairment and model levels. With the help of this architectural framework, various existing tools are situated and described. Various approaches for modeling the emulation actions are studied, such as impairment-based scenarios and virtual architectures, real-time discrete simulation and trace-based systems. Those modeling approaches are described and compared in terms of services and we study their ability to respond to various designer needs to assess when emulation is needed
