This series of reports explores new forms of teaching, learning and assessment for an interactive world, to guide teachers and policy makers in productive innovation. This sixth report proposes ten innovations that are already in currency but have not yet had a profound influence on education. To produce it, a group of academics at the Institute of Educational Technology in The Open University collaborated with researchers from the Learning In a NetworKed Society (LINKS) Israeli Center of Research Excellence (I-CORE).

Using metadata for content indexing within an OER network
This paper outlines the ICT solution for a metadata portal indexing open educational resources within a network of institutions. The network is aimed at blending academic and entrepreneurial knowledge,by enabling higher education institutions to publish various academic learning resources e.g. video lectures, course planning materials, or thematic content, whereasenterprises can present different forms of expert knowledge, such as case studies, expert presentations on specific topics, demonstrations of software implementation in practice and the like. As these resources need to bediscoverable, accessible and shared by potential learners across the learning environment, it is very important that they are well described and tagged in a standard way in machine readable form by metadata. Only then can they be successfully used and reused, especially when a large amount of these resources is reached, which makes it hard for the user to locate efficiently those of interest. The metadata set adopted in our approach relies on two standards: Dublin Core and Learning Object Metadata. The aim of metadata and the corresponding metadata portal described in this paper is to provide structured access to information on open educational resources within the network

Bio-techno-practice. Personal and social responsibility in the academic work
The new challenges posed by biomedicine and biotechnologies ask for a deeper consideration on the relationship among
science, knowledge and social responsibility. On one hand, in fact, technologies seem to shape our idea of human progress
and scientific understanding of the natural world and of life in particular. On the other hand, a thoughtful consideration on
the philosophical foundations of science as human enterprise is required. This also opens important questions about the new
emerging paradigms of ‘excellence’ in the academic, social and market fields and on the role that universities play in training the
future leaders and professionals of our society. After a short review of the contemporary philosophical reflections on the unity
of knowledge, which is the origin and the goal of academic work, we argue that adherence to our current challenges through the
bio-techno-practice prism is a fecund driving force of the academic activities. Moving from the experience of an international
project, we also discuss the impact that such interdisciplinary activities have on what we call hidden curriculum, i.e. the embodied
style of (skills that allow) people in taking care of each other in their physical, social, professional and scientific needs
Blending Learning: The Evolution of Online and Face-to-Face Education from 20082015
In 2008, iNACOL produced a series of papers documenting promising practices identified throughout the field of K–12 online learning. Since then, we have witnessed a tremendous acceleration of transformative policy and practice driving personalized learning in the K–12 education space. State, district, school, and classroom leaders recognize that the ultimate potential for blended and online learning lies in the opportunity to transform the education system and enable higher levels of learning through competency-based approaches.iNACOL's core work adds significant value to the field by providing a powerful practitioner voice in policy advocacy, communications, and in the creation of resources and best practices to enable transformational change in K–12 education.We worked with leaders throughout the field to update these resources for a new generation of pioneers working towards the creation of student-centered learning environments.This refreshed series, Promising Practices in Blended and Online Learning, explores some of the approaches developed by practitioners and policymakers in response to key issues in K–12 education, including:Blended Learning: The Evolution of Online and Face-to-Face Education from 2008-2015;Using Blended and Online Learning for Credit Recovery and At-Risk Students;Oversight and Management of Blended and Online Programs: Ensuring Quality and Accountability; andFunding and Legislation for Blended and Online Education.Personalized learning environments provide the very best educational opportunities and personalized pathways for all students, with highly qualified teachers delivering world-class instruction using innovative digital resources and content.
