    Are Lock-Free Concurrent Algorithms Practically Wait-Free?

    Lock-free concurrent algorithms guarantee that some concurrent operation will always make progress in a finite number of steps. Yet programmers prefer to treat concurrent code as if it were wait-free, guaranteeing that all operations always make progress. Unfortunately, designing wait-free algorithms is generally a very complex task, and the resulting algorithms are not always efficient. While obtaining efficient wait-free algorithms has been a long-time goal for the theory community, most non-blocking commercial code is only lock-free. This paper suggests a simple solution to this problem. We show that, for a large class of lock- free algorithms, under scheduling conditions which approximate those found in commercial hardware architectures, lock-free algorithms behave as if they are wait-free. In other words, programmers can keep on designing simple lock-free algorithms instead of complex wait-free ones, and in practice, they will get wait-free progress. Our main contribution is a new way of analyzing a general class of lock-free algorithms under a stochastic scheduler. Our analysis relates the individual performance of processes with the global performance of the system using Markov chain lifting between a complex per-process chain and a simpler system progress chain. We show that lock-free algorithms are not only wait-free with probability 1, but that in fact a general subset of lock-free algorithms can be closely bounded in terms of the average number of steps required until an operation completes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to analyze progress conditions, typically stated in relation to a worst case adversary, in a stochastic model capturing their expected asymptotic behavior.Comment: 25 page

    Parallel Optimisations of Perceived Quality Simulations

    Processor architectures have changed significantly, with fast single core processors replaced by a diverse range of multicore processors. New architectures require code to be executed in parallel to realize these performance gains. This is straightforward for small applications, where analysis and refactoring is simple or existing tools can parallelise automatically, however the organic growth and large complicated data structures common in mature industrial applications can make parallelisation more difficult. One such application is studied, a mature Windows C++ application used for the visualisation of Perceived Quality (PQ). PQ simulations enable the visualisation of how manufacturing variations affect the look of the final product. The application is commonly used, however suffers from performance issues. Previous parallelisation attempts have failed. The issues associated with parallelising a mature industrial application are investigated. A methodology to investigate, analyse and evaluate the methods and tools available is produced. The shortfalls of these methods and tools are identified, and the methods used to overcome them explained. The parallel version of the software is evaluated for performance. Case studies centring on the significant use cases of the application help to understand the impact on the user. Automated compilers provided no parallelism, while the manual parallelisation using OpenMP required significant refactoring. A number of data dependency issues resulted in some serialised code. Performance scaled with the number of physical cores when applied to certain problems, however the unresolved bottlenecks resulted in mixed results for users. Use in verification did benefit, however those in early design stages did not. Without tools to aid analysis of complex data structures, parallelism could remain out of reach for industrial applications.     Fast and Robust Memory Reclamation for Concurrent Data Structures

    In concurrent systems without automatic garbage collection, it is challenging to determine when it is safe to reclaim memory, especially for lock-free data structures. Existing concurrent memory reclamation schemes are either fast but do not tolerate process delays, robust to delays but with high overhead, or both robust and fast but narrowly applicable. This paper proposes QSense, a novel concurrent memory reclamation technique. QSense is a hybrid technique with a fast path and a fallback path. In the common case (without process delays), a high-performing memory reclamation scheme is used (fast path). If process delays block memory reclamation through the fast path, a robust fallback path is used to guarantee progress. The fallback path uses hazard pointers, but avoids their notorious need for frequent and expensive memory fences. QSense is widely applicable, as we illustrate through several lock-free data structure algorithms. Our experimental evaluation shows that QSense has an overhead comparable to the fastest memory reclamation techniques, while still tolerating prolonged process delays

    The Inherent Cost of Remembering Consistently

    Non-volatile memory (NVM) promises fast, byte-addressable and durable storage, with raw access latencies in the same order of magnitude as DRAM. But in order to take advantage of the durability of NVM, programmers need to design persistent objects which maintain consistent state across system crashes and restarts. Concurrent implementations of persistent objects typically make heavy use of expensive persistent fence instructions to order NVM accesses, thus negating some of the performance benefits of NVM. This raises the question of the minimal number of persistent fence instructions required to implement a persistent object. We answer this question in the deterministic lock-free case by providing lower and upper bounds on the required number of fence instructions. We obtain our upper bound by presenting a new universal construction that implements durably any object using at most one persistent fence per update operation invoked. Our lower bound states that in the worst case, each process needs to issue at least one persistent fence per update operation invoked

    Concurrent Search Data Structures Can Be Blocking and Practically Wait-Free

    We argue that there is virtually no practical situation in which one should seek a "theoretically wait-free" algorithm at the expense of a state-of-the-art blocking algorithm in the case of search data structures: blocking algorithms are simple, fast, and can be made "practically wait-free". We draw this conclusion based on the most exhaustive study of blocking search data structures to date. We consider (a) different search data structures of different sizes, (b) numerous uniform and non-uniform workloads, representative of a wide range of practical scenarios, with different percentages of update operations, (c) with and without delayed threads, (d) on different hardware technologies, including processors providing HTM instructions. We explain our claim that blocking search data structures are practically wait-free through an analogy with the birthday paradox, revealing that, in state-of-the-art algorithms implementing such data structures, the probability of conflicts is extremely small.     Universally Scalable Concurrent Data Structures

    The increase in the number of cores in processors has been an important trend over the past decade. In order to be able to efficiently use such architectures, modern software must be scalable: performance should increase proportionally to the number of allotted cores. While some software is inherently parallel, with threads seldom having to coordinate, a large fraction of software systems are based on shared state, to which access must be coordinated. This shared state generally comes in the form of a concurrent data structure. It is thus essential for these concurrent data structures to be correct, fast and scalable, regardless of the scenario (i.e.,different workloads, processors, memory units, programming abstractions). Nevertheless, few or no generic approaches exist that result in concurrent data structures which scale in a large spectrum of environments. This dissertation introduces a set of generic methods that allows to build - irrespective of the deployment environment - fast and scalable concurrent data structures. We start by identifying a set of sufficient conditions for concurrent search data structures to scale and perform well regardless of the workloads and processors they are running on.We introduce âasynchronized concurrencyâ, a paradigm consisting of four complementary programming patterns, which calls for the design of concurrent search data structures to resemble that of their sequential counterparts. Next, we show that there is virtually no practical situation in which one should seek a âtheoretically wait-freeâ algorithm at the expense of a state-of-the-art blocking algorithm in the case of search data structures: blocking algorithms are simple, fast, and can be made "practically wait-free". We then focus on the memory unit, and provide a method yielding fast concurrent data structures even when the memory is non-volatile, and structures must be recoverable in case of a transient failure. We start by introducing a generic technique that allows us to avoid doing expensive writes to non-volatile memory by using a fast software cache. We also study memory management, and propose a solution tailored to concurrent data structures that uses coarse-grained memory management in order to avoid logging. Moreover, we argue for the use of lock-free algorithms in this non-volatile context, and show how by optimizing them we can avoid expensive logging operations. Together, the techniques we propose enable us to avoid any form of logging in the common case, thus significantly improving concurrent data structure performance when using non-volatile RAM. Finally, we go beyond basic interfaces, and look at scalable partitioned data structures implemented through a transactional interface. We present multiversion timestamp locking (MVTL),a new genre of multiversion concurrency control algorithms for serializable transactions. The key idea behind MVTL is simple and novel: lock individual time points instead of locking objects or versions. We provide several MVTL-based algorithms, that address limitations of current concurrency-control schemes.
