Composing Distributed Data-intensive Web Services Using a Flexible Memetic Algorithm

Web Service Composition (WSC) is a particularly promising application of Web services, where multiple individual services with specific functionalities are composed to accomplish a more complex task, which must fulfil functional requirements and optimise Quality of Service (QoS) attributes, simultaneously. Additionally, large quantities of data, produced by technological advances, need to be exchanged between services. Data-intensive Web services, which manipulate and deal with those data, are of great interest to implement data-intensive processes, such as distributed Data-intensive Web Service Composition (DWSC). Researchers have proposed Evolutionary Computing (EC) fully-automated WSC techniques that meet all the above factors. Some of these works employed Memetic Algorithms (MAs) to enhance the performance of EC through increasing its exploitation ability of in searching neighbourhood area of a solution. However, those works are not efficient or effective. This paper proposes an MA-based approach to solving the problem of distributed DWSC in an effective and efficient manner. In particular, we develop an MA that hybridises EC with a flexible local search technique incorporating distance of services. An evaluation using benchmark datasets is carried out, comparing existing state-of-the-art methods. Results show that our proposed method has the highest quality and an acceptable execution time overall.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1901.0556

Meta-heuristic algorithms are often inspired by natural phenomena, including the evolution of species in Darwinian natural selection theory, ant behaviors in biology, flock behaviors of some birds, and annealing in metallurgy. Due to their great potential in solving difficult optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have found their way into automobile engine design. There are different optimization problems arising in different areas of car engine management including calibration, control system, fault diagnosis, and modeling. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art applications of different meta-heuristic algorithms in engine management systems. The review covers a wide range of research, including the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in engine calibration, optimizing engine control systems, engine fault diagnosis, and optimizing different parts of engines and modeling. The meta-heuristic algorithms reviewed in this paper include evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategy, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, differential evolution, estimation of distribution algorithm, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and artificial immune system

Identifying vital edges in Chinese air route network via memetic algorithm

Due to its rapid development in the past decade, air transportation system has attracted considerable research attention from diverse communities. While most of the previous studies focused on airline networks, here we systematically explore the robustness of the Chinese air route network, and identify the vital edges which form the backbone of Chinese air transportation system. Specifically, we employ a memetic algorithm to minimize the network robustness after removing certain edges hence the solution of this model is the set of vital edges. Counterintuitively, our results show that the most vital edges are not necessarily the edges of highest topological importance, for which we provide an extensive explanation from the microscope of view. Our findings also offer new insights to understanding and optimizing other real-world network systems

An Improved Memetic Algorithm for Web Search

AbstractIn order to search a relevant data from World Wide Web, user use to submit query to search engine. Search engine returns combination of relevant and irrelevant results. This paper proposes a novel method based on Memetic Algorithm (MA) for searching the most relevant snippets in case of complex queries. The improved memetic algorithm (IMA) uses a hybrid-selection strategy to enhance the search result. Classical local search operators are combined for improvement in final output. Besides, the same chromosomes are modified to be different so that the population diversity is preserved and the algorithm kept from premature convergence. The performance of IMA is tested by comparing the result of search engine, basic Memetic and Improved Memetic Algorithm. Experimental results show that IMA could obtain superior solutions to the counterparts

A Novel Memetic Feature Selection Algorithm

Feature selection is a problem of finding efficient features among all features in which the final feature set can improve accuracy and reduce complexity. In feature selection algorithms search strategies are key aspects. Since feature selection is an NP-Hard problem; therefore heuristic algorithms have been studied to solve this problem. In this paper, we have proposed a method based on memetic algorithm to find an efficient feature subset for a classification problem. It incorporates a filter method in the genetic algorithm to improve classification performance and accelerates the search in identifying core feature subsets. Particularly, the method adds or deletes a feature from a candidate feature subset based on the multivariate feature information. Empirical study on commonly data sets of the university of California, Irvine shows that the proposed method outperforms existing methods
