Factorizing the Stochastic Galerkin System
Recent work has explored solver strategies for the linear system of equations
arising from a spectral Galerkin approximation of the solution of PDEs with
parameterized (or stochastic) inputs. We consider the related problem of a
matrix equation whose matrix and right hand side depend on a set of parameters
(e.g. a PDE with stochastic inputs semidiscretized in space) and examine the
linear system arising from a similar Galerkin approximation of the solution. We
derive a useful factorization of this system of equations, which yields bounds
on the eigenvalues, clues to preconditioning, and a flexible implementation
method for a wide array of problems. We complement this analysis with (i) a
numerical study of preconditioners on a standard elliptic PDE test problem and
(ii) a fluids application using existing CFD codes; the MATLAB codes used in
the numerical studies are available online.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
Some Preconditioning Techniques for Saddle Point Problems
Saddle point problems arise frequently in many applications in science and engineering, including constrained optimization, mixed finite element formulations of partial differential equations, circuit analysis, and so forth. Indeed the formulation of most problems with constraints gives rise to saddle point systems. This paper provides a concise overview of iterative approaches for the solution of such systems which are of particular importance in the context of large scale computation. In particular we describe some of the most useful preconditioning techniques for Krylov subspace solvers applied to saddle point problems, including block and constrained preconditioners.\ud

A New Domain Decomposition Method for the Compressible Euler Equations
In this work we design a new domain decomposition method for the Euler
equations in 2 dimensions. The basis is the equivalence via the Smith
factorization with a third order scalar equation to whom we can apply an
algorithm inspired from the Robin-Robin preconditioner for the
convection-diffusion equation. Afterwards we translate it into an algorithm for
the initial system and prove that at the continuous level and for a
decomposition into 2 sub-domains, it converges in 2 iterations. This property
cannot be preserved strictly at discrete level and for arbitrary domain
decompositions but we still have numerical results which confirm a very good
stability with respect to the various parameters of the problem (mesh size,
Mach number, ....).Comment: Submitte
Factorization of Z-homogeneous polynomials in the First (q)-Weyl Algebra
We present algorithms to factorize weighted homogeneous elements in the first
polynomial Weyl algebra and -Weyl algebra, which are both viewed as a
-graded rings. We show, that factorization of homogeneous
polynomials can be almost completely reduced to commutative univariate
factorization over the same base field with some additional uncomplicated
combinatorial steps. This allows to deduce the complexity of our algorithms in
detail. Furthermore, we will show for homogeneous polynomials that
irreducibility in the polynomial first Weyl algebra also implies irreducibility
in the rational one, which is of interest for practical reasons. We report on
our implementation in the computer algebra system \textsc{Singular}. It
outperforms for homogeneous polynomials currently available implementations
dealing with factorization in the first Weyl algebra both in speed and elegancy
of the results.Comment: 26 pages, Singular implementation, 2 algorithms, 1 figure, 2 table
Preconditioning complex symmetric linear systems
A new polynomial preconditioner for symmetric complex linear systems based on
Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting (HSS) for complex symmetric linear
systems is herein presented. It applies to Conjugate Orthogonal Conjugate
Gradient (COCG) or Conjugate Orthogonal Conjugate Residual (COCR) iterative
solvers and does not require any estimation of the spectrum of the coefficient
matrix. An upper bound of the condition number of the preconditioned linear
system is provided. Moreover, to reduce the computational cost, an inexact
variant based on incomplete Cholesky decomposition or orthogonal polynomials is
proposed. Numerical results show that the present preconditioner and its
inexact variant are efficient and robust solvers for this class of linear
systems. A stability analysis of the method completes the description of the
preconditioner.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures, 4 table
