    A Methodology to Quantify Cumulative Damage Function (CDF) for Integration Into an Object-Oriented Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

    Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is one of the most widely used tools to determine the environmental impact of products and processes. One of the main concerns with LCA is the limited comparability of the results due to limitations in defining the functional unit. This affects goal and scope definition of the LCA studies. A result, an object-oriented framework for LCA that integrates functional analysis and systems engineering principles was developed. In this research a cumulative damage function (CDF) to quantify the life of components, subsystems and components was defined. However, the development of the methodology and underlying principles to develop the CDF was left for future work. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a framework to quantify CDF using the concepts of Remaining Useful Life (RUL), reliability analysis and failure analysis so that it can be easily integrated into the object-oriented LCA framework. This thesis will present a 5-step methodology to quantify the CDF and demonstrate its use and effectiveness by implementing it on a manual can opener and a coffee maker as examples of product systems

    Aerospace Ground Equipment\u27s Impact on Aircraft Availability and Deployment

    The first purpose of this thesis was to study the effects of four factors on aircraft availability: the aerospace ground equipment (AGE) design configuration, the mean time between failure (MTBF) of AGE, the mean time to repair (MTTR) AGE, and the travel time to transport the AGE around the flightline. A simulation developed by Carrico (1996) that has its foundation based on the Logistics Composite Model (LCOM) was used. ANOVA results indicated that the present estimates of these factors are too broad for trade studies that include an estimate of aircraft availability to begin. The time it takes AGE to travel from one place to another around the flightline strongly affected aircraft availability. It is recommended that further AGE field observation and data collection be accomplished before the merits of one AGE cart technology is compared to another. The second purpose of this thesis was to collect as much information on the deployability and affordability of AGE as possible. Although much of the information collected was a few years old, the results suggest that new technologies improve the deployment footprint and the combined acquisition and deployment costs.     The overall study effort proceeded from the identification of 106 technology topics to the selection of 5 for detail trade studies. The technical issues and options were evaluated through the trade process. Finally, individual consideration was given to costs and benefits for the technologies identified for advancement. Eight priority technology items were identified for advancement. Supporting data generated during the trade selection and trade study process were presented. Space platform requirements, trade study and cost benefits analysis, and technology advancement planning are advanced. The structured approach used took advantage of a number of forms developed to ensure that a consistent approach was employed by each of the diverse specialists that participated. These forms were an intrinsic part of the study protocol
