Object-oriented shipboard electric power system library
The objective of this thesis is to explore the powerful capabilities of using an object-oriented modeling language to model and simulate an all electric Naval Shipboard Power System. Modelica has been used to model and simulate the shipboard power system which acts as an alternative simulation tool. The shipboard system is developed using the concept of packages. Different components like the buck converter, inverter, and AC machines have been modeled as a part of the library to develop the power system. The shipboard system has been simulated as two decoupled systems, the AC and DC systems. This research further focuses on developing a networked protection system to detect and clear faults and protect the shipboard power system from complete breakdown. A discrete supervisory controller has been designed using Petri nets as part of the protection system to control the converters and clear faults. A communication network has also been modeled for communication. Two different case studies, the open circuit test, and short circuit test were performed to test the effectiveness of the protection system and the simulation results are presented. This thesis also gives an overview of different properties of Modelica along with its advantages over other simulation tools, a detailed survey of different types of object-oriented simulation tools available, a comparison of different power electronics simulation tools, and some of the previous work done in Modelica
Foundations of Multi-Paradigm Modelling for Cyber-Physical Systems
This open access book coherently gathers well-founded information on the fundamentals of and formalisms for modelling cyber-physical systems (CPS). Highlighting the cross-disciplinary nature of CPS modelling, it also serves as a bridge for anyone entering CPS from related areas of computer science or engineering. Truly complex, engineered systems—known as cyber-physical systems—that integrate physical, software, and network aspects are now on the rise. However, there is no unifying theory nor systematic design methods, techniques or tools for these systems. Individual (mechanical, electrical, network or software) engineering disciplines only offer partial solutions. A technique known as Multi-Paradigm Modelling has recently emerged suggesting to model every part and aspect of a system explicitly, at the most appropriate level(s) of abstraction, using the most appropriate modelling formalism(s), and then weaving the results together to form a representation of the system. If properly applied, it enables, among other global aspects, performance analysis, exhaustive simulation, and verification. This book is the first systematic attempt to bring together these formalisms for anyone starting in the field of CPS who seeks solid modelling foundations and a comprehensive introduction to the distinct existing techniques that are multi-paradigmatic. Though chiefly intended for master and post-graduate level students in computer science and engineering, it can also be used as a reference text for practitioners

Modelling polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells for dynamic reliability assessment
Tackling climate change is arguably the biggest challenge humanity faces in the 21st century. Rising average global temperatures threaten to destabilize the fragile ecosystem of the Earth and bring unprecedented changes to human lives if nothing is done to prevent it. This phenomenon is caused by the anthropogenic greenhouse effect due to the increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2). One way to avert the disaster is to drastically reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in all spheres of human activities, including transportation. To do this, research and development of electric vehicles (EVs) to make them more efficient, reliable and accessible is essential. [Continues.
A Rewriting-Logic-Based Technique for Modeling Thermal Systems
This paper presents a rewriting-logic-based modeling and analysis technique
for physical systems, with focus on thermal systems. The contributions of this
paper can be summarized as follows: (i) providing a framework for modeling and
executing physical systems, where both the physical components and their
physical interactions are treated as first-class citizens; (ii) showing how
heat transfer problems in thermal systems can be modeled in Real-Time Maude;
(iii) giving the implementation in Real-Time Maude of a basic numerical
technique for executing continuous behaviors in object-oriented hybrid systems;
and (iv) illustrating these techniques with a set of incremental case studies
using realistic physical parameters, with examples of simulation and model
checking analyses.Comment: In Proceedings RTRTS 2010, arXiv:1009.398
The OpenModelica integrated environment for modeling, simulation, and model-based development
OpenModelica is a unique large-scale integrated open-source Modelica- and FMI-based modeling, simulation, optimization, model-based analysis and development environment. Moreover, the OpenModelica environment provides a number of facilities such as debugging; optimization; visualization and 3D animation; web-based model editing and simulation; scripting from Modelica, Python, Julia, and Matlab; efficient simulation and co-simulation of FMI-based models; compilation for embedded systems; Modelica- UML integration; requirement verification; and generation of parallel code for multi-core architectures. The environment is based on the equation-based object-oriented Modelica language and currently uses the MetaModelica extended version of Modelica for its model compiler implementation. This overview paper gives an up-to-date description of the capabilities of the system, short overviews of used open source symbolic and numeric algorithms with pointers to published literature, tool integration aspects, some lessons learned, and the main vision behind its development.Fil: Fritzson, Peter. New Software Tool for Modelling and Control of Discrete-Event and Hybrid Systems Using Petri Nets
The main aim of the proposed paper is to design a new software tool for modelling and control of discrete-event and hybrid systems using Arduino and similar microcontrollers. To accomplish these tasks a new tool called PN2ARDUINO based on Petri nets is proposed which is able to communicate with the microcontroller. Communication with the microcontroller is based on the modified Firmata protocol hence the control algorithm can be implemented on all microcontrollers that support this type of protocol. The developed software tool has been successfully verified in control of laboratory systems. It can also be used for education and research purposes as it offers a graphical environment for designing control algorithms for hybrid and mainly discrete-event systems. The proposed tool can improve education and practice in the field of cyber-physical systems (Industry 4.0)
Cyber-Virtual Systems: Simulation, Validation & Visualization
We describe our ongoing work and view on simulation, validation and
visualization of cyber-physical systems in industrial automation during
development, operation and maintenance. System models may represent an existing
physical part - for example an existing robot installation - and a software
simulated part - for example a possible future extension. We call such systems
cyber-virtual systems.
In this paper, we present the existing VITELab infrastructure for
visualization tasks in industrial automation. The new methodology for
simulation and validation motivated in this paper integrates this
infrastructure. We are targeting scenarios, where industrial sites which may be
in remote locations are modeled and visualized from different sites anywhere in
the world.
Complementing the visualization work, here, we are also concentrating on
software modeling challenges related to cyber-virtual systems and simulation,
testing, validation and verification techniques for them. Software models of
industrial sites require behavioural models of the components of the industrial
sites such as models for tools, robots, workpieces and other machinery as well
as communication and sensor facilities. Furthermore, collaboration between
sites is an important goal of our work.Comment: Preprint, 9th International Conference on Evaluation of Novel

Reliability modelling of PEM fuel cells with hybrid Petri nets
In this paper, a novel model for dynamic reliability analysis of a PEM fuel cell system is developed using Modelica language in order to account for multi-state dynamics and aging. The modelling approach constitutes the combination of physical and stochastic sub-models with shared variables. The physical model consist of deterministic calculations of the system state described by variables such as temperature, pressure, mass flow rates and voltage output. Additionally, estimated component degradation rates are also taken into account.
The non-deterministic model, on the other hand, is implemented with stochastic Petri nets which represent different events that can occur at random times during fuel cell lifetime. A case study of effects of a cooling system on fuel cell performance was investigated. Monte Carlo simulations of the process resulted in a distribution of system parameters, thus providing an estimate of best and worst scenarios of a fuel cell lifetime
