    Fault tolerant drives for safety critical applications

    PhD ThesisThe correct operation of adjustable speed drives, which form part of a larger system, is often essential to the operation of the system as a whole. In certain applications the failure of such a drive could result in a threat to human safety and these applications are termed 'safety critical'. The chance of a component failure resulting in non-operation of the drive can be dramatically reduced by adopting a fault tolerant design. A fault tolerant drive must continue to operate throughout the occurrence of any single point failure without undue disturbance to the power output. Thereafter the drive must be capable of producing rated output indefinitely in the presence of the fault. The work presented in this thesis shows that fault tolerance can be achieved without severe penalties in terms of cost or power to mass ratio. The design of a novel permanent magnet drive is presented and a 'proof of concept' demonstrator has been built, based on a 20 kW, 13000 RPM aircraft fuel pump specffication. A novel current controller with near optimal transient performance is developed to enable precise shaping of the phase currents at high shaft speeds. The best operating regime for the machine is investigated to optimise the power to mass ratio of the drive. A list of the most likely electrical faults is considered. Some faults result in large fault currents and require rapid detection to prevent fault propagation. Several novel fault sensors are discussed. Fault detection and identification schemes are developed, including new schemes for rapid detection of turn to turn faults and power device short circuit faults. Post fault control schemes are described which enable the drive to continue to operate indefinitely in the presence of each fault. Finally, results show the initially healthy drive operating up to, through and beyond the introduction of each of the most serious faults.EPSR

    Sensorless position estimation in fault-tolerant permanent magnet AC motor drives with redundancy.

    Safety critical applications are heavily dependent on fault-tolerant motor drives being capable of continuing to operate satisfactorily under faults. This research utilizes a fault-tolerant PMAC motor drive with redundancy involving dual drives to provide parallel redundancy where each drive has electrically, magnetically, thermally and physically independent phases to improve its fault-tolerant capabilities. PMAC motor drives can offer high power and torque densities which are essential in high performance applications, for example, more-electric airplanes. In this thesis, two sensorless algorithms are proposed to estimate the rotor position in a fault-tolerant three-phase surface-mounted sinusoidal PMAC motor drive with redundancy under normal and faulted operating conditions. The key aims are to improve the reliability by eliminating the use of a position sensor which is one of major sources of failures, as well as by offering fault-tolerant position estimation. The algorithms utilize measurements of the winding currents and phase voltages, to compute flux linkage increments without integration, hence producing the predicted position values. Estimation errors due measurements are compensated for by a modified phase-locked loop technique which forces the predicted positions to track the flux linkage increments, finally generating the rotor position estimate. The fault-tolerant three-phase sensorless position estimation method utilizes the measured data from the three phase windings in each drive, consequently obtaining a total of two position estimates. However, the fault-tolerant two-phase sensorless position estimation method uses measurements from pairs of phases and produces three position estimates for each drive. Therefore, six position estimates are available in the dual drive system. In normal operation, all of these position estimates can be averaged to achieve a final rotor angle estimate in both schemes. Under faulted operating conditions, on the other hand, a final position estimate should be achieved by averaging position estimates obtained with measurements from healthy phases since unacceptable estimation errors can be created by making use of measured values from phases with failures. In order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed fault-tolerant sensorless position estimation schemes, the algorithms were tested using both simulated data and offline measured data from an experimental fault-tolerant PMAC motor drive system. In the healthy condition, both techniques presented good performance with acceptable accuracies under low and high steady-state speeds, starting from standstill and step load changes. In addition, they had robustness against parameter variations and measurement errors, as well as the ability to recover quickly from large incorrect initial position information.     Doubly-fed induction generator used in wind energy

    Wound-rotor induction generator has numerous advantages in wind power generation over other generators. One scheme for wound-rotor induction generator is realized when a converter cascade is used between the slip-ring terminals and the utility grid to control the rotor power. This configuration is called the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). In this work, a novel induction machine model is developed. This model includes the saturation in the main and leakage flux paths. It shows that the model which considers the saturation effects gives more realistic results. A new technique, which was developed for synchronous machines, was applied to experimentally measure the stator and rotor leakage inductance saturation characteristics on the induction machine. A vector control scheme is developed to control the rotor side voltage-source converter. Vector control allows decoupled or independent control of both active and reactive power of DFIG. These techniques are based on the theory of controlling the B- and q- axes components of voltage or current in different reference frames. In this work, the stator flux oriented rotor current control, with decoupled control of active and reactive power, is adopted. This scheme allows the independent control of the generated active and reactive power as well as the rotor speed to track the maximum wind power point. Conventionally, the controller type used in vector controllers is of the PI type with a fixed proportional and integral gain. In this work, different intelligent schemes by which the controller can change its behavior are proposed. The first scheme is an adaptive gain scheduler which utilizes different characteristics to generate the variation in the proportional and the integral gains. The second scheme is a fuzzy logic gain scheduler and the third is a neuro-fuzzy controller. The transient responses using the above mentioned schemes are compared analytically and experimentally. It has been found that although the fuzzy logic and neuro-fuzzy schemes are more complicated and have many parameters; this complication provides a higher degree of freedom in tuning the controller which is evident in giving much better system performance. Finally, the simulation results were experimentally verified by building the experimental setup and implementing the developed control schemes

    Postfault operation of five-phase induction machine with minimum total losses under aingle open-phase fault

    Five-phase induction machines (FPIM) have attracted notable interest in safety critical applications as well as wind energy generation systems. This is largely due to their additional degrees of freedom that retain the machine starting/running steadily under fault conditions. In the available literature, postfault operation of multiphase machines is typically implemented using two techniques: minimum losses (ML) or maximum torque per ampere (MT) strategies. The optimization embedded into the control strategy, however, mostly addresses minimization of the stator copper loss, while the effect of the rotor loss and core loss are discarded in the optimal current calculation. This paper revisits postfault operation of the FPIM under single open phase fault (1OPF) by including the effect of both rotor loss and core loss on the machine's optimal current calculation over the full achievable loading range. The proposed searching algorithm, which combines the advantages of both MT and ML techniques, attempts to minimize the total machine losses induced by the current components of both the fundamental \alpha \beta and the secondary xy subspaces.     High Temperature, Permanent Magnet Biased Magnetic Bearings

    The Electron Energy Corporation (EEC) along with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is researching magnetic bearings. The purpose of this research was to design and develop a high-temperature (1000�F) magnetic bearing system using High Temperature Permanent Magnets (HTPM), developed by the EEC. The entire system consisted of two radial bearings, one thrust bearing, one motor and 2 sets of catcher bearings. This high temperature magnetic bearing system will be used in high performance, high speed and high temperature applications like space vehicles, jet engines and deep sea equipment. The bearing system had a target design to carry a load equal to 500 lb-f (2225N). Another objective was to design and build a test rig fixture to measure the load capacity of the designed high temperature radial magnetic bearing (HTRMB) called Radial Bearing Force Test Rig (RBFTR). A novel feature of this high temperature magnetic bearing is its homopolar construction which incorporates state of the art high temperature, 1000 �F, permanent magnets. A second feature is its fault tolerance capability which provides the desired control forces even if half the coils have failed. The permanent magnet bias of the radial magnetic bearing reduces the amount of current required for magnetic bearing operation. This reduces the power loss due to the coil current resistance and also increases the system efficiency because magnetic field of the HTPM is used to take up the major portion of the static load on the bearing. The bias flux of the homopolar radial bearing is produced by the EEC HTPM to reduce the related ohmic losses of an electromagnetic circuit significantly. An experimental procedure was developed using the Radial Bearing Force Test Rig (RBTFR) to measure actual load capacity of the designed bearing at the test rig.     Modelling and detection of faults in axial-flux permanent magnet machines

    The development of various topologies and configurations of axial-flux permanent magnet machine has spurred its use for electromechanical energy conversion in several applications. As it becomes increasingly deployed, effective condition monitoring built on reliable and accurate fault detection techniques is needed to ensure its engineering integrity. Unlike induction machine which has been rigorously investigated for faults, axial-flux permanent magnet machine has not. Thus in this thesis, axial-flux permanent magnet machine is investigated under faulty conditions. Common faults associated with it namely; static eccentricity and interturn short circuit are modelled, and detection techniques are established. The modelling forms a basis for; developing a platform for precise fault replication on a developed experimental test-rig, predicting and analysing fault signatures using both finite element analysis and experimental analysis. In the detection, the motor current signature analysis, vibration analysis and electrical impedance spectroscopy are applied. Attention is paid to fault-feature extraction and fault discrimination. Using both frequency and time-frequency techniques, features are tracked in the line current under steady-state and transient conditions respectively. Results obtained provide rich information on the pattern of fault harmonics. Parametric spectral estimation is also explored as an alternative to the Fourier transform in the steady-state analysis of faulty conditions. It is found to be as effective as the Fourier transform and more amenable to short signal-measurement duration. Vibration analysis is applied in the detection of eccentricities; its efficacy in fault detection is hinged on proper determination of vibratory frequencies and quantification of corresponding tones. This is achieved using analytical formulations and signal processing techniques. Furthermore, the developed fault model is used to assess the influence of cogging torque minimization techniques and rotor topologies in axial-flux permanent magnet machine on current signal in the presence of static eccentricity. The double-sided topology is found to be tolerant to the presence of static eccentricity unlike the single-sided topology due to the opposing effect of the resulting asymmetrical properties of the airgap. The cogging torque minimization techniques do not impair on the established fault detection technique in the single-sided topology. By applying electrical broadband impedance spectroscopy, interturn faults are diagnosed; a high frequency winding model is developed to analyse the impedance-frequency response obtained

    In-wheel motors for electric vehicles

    PhD ThesisThe in-wheel motor technology as the source of traction for electric vehicles has been researched recently because it is compact and ease-to-integrate. The motor is housed in the wheel. Since the room for the motor is tightly defined by the size of the wheel and there is no gearing system, the motor must have a high torque density to drive the vehicle directly and a high efficiency to keep cool. The existing motor uses a surface-mounted magnet topology. To make it more cost-competitive, the magnet material needs to be reduced while maintaining the torque performance at the rated operating condition. It is the motive of this Ph.D. research. The thesis starts with a brief introduction on the background of the electric vehicle. Then the major challenges of the in-wheel motor technology are summarised. With the derived specifications, an induction machine and a switched reluctance machine are then simulated and analysed. Still, the permanent magnet synchronous machine is proved to have the highest torque density. Change from surface-mounted to interior topology, six new magnet topologies are investigated. The V-shaped interior magnet topology shows superior torque-to-magnet-mass ratio and is easy-to-manufacture. It gives 96% torque while using 56% of the magnet mass compared to the existing motor due to the assist from the additional reluctance torque and the lower magnetic circuit reluctance. The key to use less magnet mass while avoiding the demagnetisation is the front iron shielding effect. The analytical explanation on the better resistance to demagnetisation in the V-shaped motor is provided. The magnet loss mechanism is discussed for proper segmentation. Detailed design adjustments are made to compromise between the torque-to-magnet-mass ratio and the manufactural practicality. Issues regarding to lower mechanical rigidity occurred in initial assembly of the prototype and solutions are proposed. Followed by successful assembly, experimental tests were conducted and results show good agreement with the simulation. A specific form of torque ripple is found in the V-shaped motor and occurs generally in all fractional-slot concentrated-winding machines with saliency. It is explained by an analytical model. This model is also extended to explain the generally lower reluctance torque in vi fractional-slot concentrated-winding machines.
