    The Productivity Consequences of Two Ergonomic Interventions

    Pre- and post-intervention data on health outcomes, absenteeism, and productivity from a longitudinal, quasi-experimental design field study of office workers was used to evaluate the economic consequences of two ergonomic interventions. Researchers assigned individuals in the study to three groups: a group that received an ergonomically designed chair and office ergonomics training; a group that received office ergonomics training only; and a control group. The results show that while training alone has neither a statistically significant effect on health nor productivity, the chair-with-training intervention substantially reduced pain and improved productivity.     Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) of the neck or cervical spine result in longer sick leaves, substantial levels of human suffering, and high costs for society. Epidemiological studies clearly indicate strong associations between MSD of the neck and the work activities requiring forceful arm exertions and heavy lifting. However, most of the existing studies that evaluate the neck or cervical spine disorders focus mainly on exertions demanding sustained neck postures of repetitive arm exertions.     Digitally connected work and its consequences for strain - a systematic review

    BACKGROUND Evolving digitization has an impact not only on the organization of work, but also on the health of employees. Dealing with new technologies, integrating new processes and requirements into work, and restructuring tasks among others are demands that can be stressful and impair health. OBJECTIVES Our aim was to identify (clusters of) working conditions associated with digitally connected work and to analyze their relations with strain, that is, health and well-being outcomes. METHODS Between May and October 2019, a search string was used to systematically search six databases (EMBASE, Medline, PSYNDEX, PsycInfo, SocIndex, WISO) for German and English texts according to the PEO scheme. The methodological quality was assessed using the Quality Assessment Tool for Studies with Diverse Design. RESULTS 14 studies were identified. Despite the search string containing latest technologies, we identified mostly studies from the 1980s/90s. To aggregate findings, a categorization of work factors (cognitive demands, social factors, organizational factors, environmental factors) and health factors (motivation/satisfaction, reduced well-being/affective symptoms, physiological parameters/somatic complaints) is introduced. The most frequently identified work factors belong to the category of cognitive demands. For health factors, motivation/satisfaction was identified most often. 475 associations were found in total. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review provides an overview of work and health factors that have been studied between 1981 and 2019. Recent texts frequently study individualized health factors (e.g., life satisfaction) whereas objective physiological measurement data and objective survey methods such as workplace analysis are not used. This latter approach was predominantly found in the older studies. In order to obtain a comprehensive picture, however, it is worthwhile to use a combination of these subjective and objective approaches for future studies in this field

    Modeling of VDT Workstation System Risk Factors.

    The objectives of this research were to determine the most important risk factors in VDT workstations associated with physical symptoms and to investigate the interrelationship among these risk factors. A conceptual model was first developed to describe the interrelationship among the basic components in a VDT workstation system and their possible health effects. A research model was then proposed to describe the hypothesized relationships among the following categories of variables: demographic, task, workstation design, work environment, psychosocial factors, work posture, psychological stress, musculoskeletal symptoms, visual symptoms, and general physical symptoms. A method which consisted of a questionnaire, measurement and posture analysis was then developed. A field study was conducted among daily computer users in a local industry. Ninety three VDT operators participated in the study. Factor analysis was applied to the physical symptoms to help identify the underlying factors. Multiple regression was used to determine the most important factors related to the physical symptoms and the effect of interactions among the risk factors. The four factors identified among physical symptoms are: ocular discomfort, general musculoskeletal symptoms, upper extremity symptoms, and other physical symptoms. Ocular discomfort is significantly related to screen glare; both general musculoskeletal symptoms and other physical symptoms are related to fatigue; and upper extremity symptoms are related to awkward upper body posture. Many interactions between the risk factors and their effects are identified, such as, psychosocial factors and demographic, and workstation factors and working posture. Psychosocial factors are found to interact with other variables and contribute to psychological stress. The implication of this research is that both physical and social environment need to be evaluated and the interactions among the components of a VDT workstation system need to be understood in order to determine physical symptom risk factors

    The friction force mouse-pad and the forearm muscles efforts (preliminary results)

    The objective of the article is to evaluate the impact of the friction force mouse-pad in the contraction level of the forearm muscles M. extensor carpi ulnaris, M. extensor digitorum M. extensor carpi radialis longus.A standard protocol of mouse movements was performed involving horizontal, vertical and diagonal mouse displacements drag-and-drop type. The operators were instructed to execute the protocol with their normal working speed. The movements protocol were performed by each subject (n=17) with three selected pairs mouse-pad, classified as low, medium and high friction force pairs. The mean time to execute the protocol with each mouse was ~138s. Mean values of ~13%MVE and ~17%MVE were found in the M. extensor carpi ulnaris and in the M. extensor digitorum respectively when performing the movements’ protocol. A 8.1% increase in %MVE was observed in the M. extensor digitorum and a 9.4% increase in %MVE was observed in the M. extensor carpi ulnaris when the high friction force pair was operated, relatively to the low friction force pair (pComputer mouse, Forearm muscles, EMG, Drag-and-drop, Friction force mouse-pad

    A Longitudinal Study of Changes in New Dental Graduates’ Engagement with Evidence-Based Practice During Their Transition to Professional Practice

    Introduction Clinicians' use, interpretation and application of evidence in everyday practice is fundamental to their delivery of appropriate, contemporary, high-quality dentistry. Little is known about whether new dental graduates' (NDGs') perspectives and use of evidence-based practice (EBP) change when they enter professional practice. Aim To explore changes in NDGs' perception of EBP for: self-efficacy; knowledge of EBP principles; attitudes; confidence in appraisal skills; and frequency of accessing evidence. Methods Two pre-validated instruments: knowledge, attitude, confidence and accessing EBP resources, EBP confidence scale, and clinical scenarios. NDGs from one dental school completed the questionnaire upon graduation (R1) and six to nine months into vocational dental training (R2). Results Response rates of R1 were 34 (52%) and R2, 21 (62% of R1, 32% overall). Between R1 and R2, knowledge (median [25th-75th percentiles]: R1 = 4 [2.5-4]; R2 = 3 [2.8-3], p = 0.07), self-efficacy (R1 = 645 [587-782]; R2 = 630 [550-690], p = 0.8) and scores related to knowledge of gold standards were comparable. However, attitude (R1 = 38 [34-39], R2 = 27 [25-30]), confidence in appraisal skills (R1 = 16 [14-20], R2 = 11[8-16]) and frequency of accessing evidence (R1 = 26 [22-28]; R2 = 18 [16-19]) all showed statistically significant reductions. Conclusion After six months in professional practice, NDGs showed statistically significant reductions in the value they place on EBP, their EBP-related skills and their use of reliable evidence sources. There were no differences in their 'self-efficacy' knowledge of EBP principles
