A Review on Swarm Intelligence Based Routing Approaches

    Get PDF
The principles of bio-inspired or swarm intelligence algorithms can be effectively used to achieve optimal solutions in routing for complex and dynamic wireless sensor networks or body area networks. As the name indicates, it is a field that is inspired by natural living beings like ants, bees, fishes, etc. Studies have proved that the routing protocols based on such bio-inspired methods perform better in terms of energy efficiency, reliability, adaptivity, scalability, and robustness. The general classification of routing protocols is classical-based and swarm-based routing protocols, where both the protocols were specifically categorized as data-centric, location-aware, hierarchical and network flow, and QoS aware protocols. In this paper, an evocative taxonomy and comparison of various swarm-based routing algorithms are presented. A brief discussion about the sensor network design and the major factors that influence the routing is also discussed. The comparative analysis of the selected swarm-based protocols is also done with respect to routing characteristics like query based, route selection, energy efficiency, and path selection. From the review, it is observed that the selection of a routing protocol is application dependent. This paper will be helpful to the researchers as a reference on bio-inspired algorithms for new protocol designs and also for the proper selection of routing protocols according to the type of applications

Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN): A Survey on Architecture, Technologies, Energy Consumption, and Security Challenges

    Get PDF
Wireless body area networks (WBANs) are a new advance utilized in recent years to increase the quality of human life by monitoring the conditions of patients inside and outside hospitals, the activities of athletes, military applications, and multimedia. WBANs consist of intelligent micro- or nano-sensors capable of processing and sending information to the base station (BS). Sensors embedded in the bodies of individuals can enable vital information exchange over wireless communication. Network forming of these sensors envisages long-term medical care without restricting patients’ normal daily activities as part of diagnosing or caring for a patient with a chronic illness or monitoring the patient after surgery to manage emergencies. This paper reviews WBAN, its security challenges, body sensor network architecture and functions, and communication technologies. The work reported in this paper investigates a significant security-level challenge existing in WBAN. Lastly, it highlights various mechanisms for increasing security and decreasing energy consumption

Strategies to Lower Security Risks Involving Medical Devices in Patient Care

Insufficient security and design strategies used during the analysis phase of medical device software development can lead to possible cybersecurity vulnerabilities with patient data. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory multiple case study was to explore strategies software developers use to implement security measures to protect patient information collected, sent, and stored by medical devices. The population for this study included software developers whose primary focus was on the security aspect of medical software in three software companies in the Baton Rouge, LA, area. The data collection process included semistructured interviews with 10 software developers and reviewing 16 organizational documents. The conceptual framework chosen for this study was the social shaping of technology, which aided in understanding how social, institutional, economic, and cultural factors affect technological decisions. An inductive analysis approach was used in this study to derive meanings and themes from participants experiences and triangulated with company documents to reach a comprehensive understanding of the research question. Prominent themes from data analysis included the security of medical device data, social influences on medical device security, establishing standard policies for medical device security, and factoring costs for medical device security. An implication for positive social change is that software developers who want to learn about similar issues and strategies to keep security breaches from happening in their organizations may be able to implement new strategies to limit cybersecurity vulnerabilities and the exposure of private personal health information
