    Bearing-Based Formation Maneuvering

    This paper studies the problem of multi-agent formation maneuver control where both of the centroid and scale of a formation are required to track given velocity references while maintaining the formation shape. Unlike the conventional approaches where the target formation is defined by inter-neighbor relative positions or distances, we propose a bearing-based approach where the target formation is defined by inter-neighbor bearings. Due to the invariance of the bearings, the bearing-based approach provides a natural solution to formation scale control. We assume the dynamics of each agent as a single integrator and propose a globally stable proportional-integral formation maneuver control law. It is shown that at least two leaders are required to collaborate in order to control the centroid and scale of the formation whereas the followers are not required to have access to any global information, such as the velocities of the leaders.Comment: To appear in the 2015 IEEE Multi-Conference on Systems and Control (MSC2015); this is the final versio

    Swarm robot social potential fields with internal agent dynamics

    Swarm robotics is a new and promising approach to the design and control of multiagent robotic systems. In this paper we use a model for a second order non-linear system of self-propelled agents interacting via pair-wise attractive and repulsive potentials. We propose a new potential field method using dynamic agent internal states to successfully solve a reactive path-planning problem. The path planning problem cannot be solved using static potential fields due to local minima formation, but can be solved by allowing the agent internal states to manipulate the potential field. Simulation results demonstrate the ability of a single agent to perform reactive problem solving effectively, as well as the ability of a swarm of agents to perform problem solving using the collective behaviour of the entire swarm

    A Low-Cost Experimental Testbed for Multi-Agent System Coordination Control

    A multi-agent system can be defined as a coordinated network of mobile, physical agents that execute complex tasks beyond their individual capabilities. Observations of biological multi-agent systems in nature reveal that these ``super-organisms” accomplish large scale tasks by leveraging the inherent advantages of a coordinated group. With this in mind, such systems have the potential to positively impact a wide variety of engineering applications (e.g. surveillance, self-driving cars, and mobile sensor networks). The current state of research in the area of multi-agent systems is quickly evolving from the theoretical development of coordination control algorithms and their computer simulations to experimental validations on proof-of-concept testbeds using small-scale mobile robotic platforms. An in-house testbed would allow for rapid prototyping and validation of control algorithms, and potentially lead to new research directions spawned by experimentally-observed issues. To this end, a custom experimental testbed, TIGER Square, has been designed, developed, built, and tested at Louisiana State University. In this work, the completed design and test results for a centralized testbed is presented. That is, the individual robots follow an overarching control entity and are reliant on a global structure, such as a central processing computer. As part of the validation process, a series of formation control experiments were executed to assess the performance of the testbed. In order to eliminate single-point failures, a multi-agent system must be fully decentralized or distributed. This means that the responsibilities of processing, localization, and communication are distributed to each agent. Therefore, this work concludes with the introduction of a prototype localization module that will be integrated into the existing centralized testbed. This initial step allows for the future decentralization of TIGER Square and opens the path to achieve a fully capable multi-agent system testbed

    Formation Control of Nonholonomic Multi-Agent Systems

    This dissertation is concerned with the formation control problem of multiple agents modeled as nonholonomic wheeled mobile robots. Both kinematic and dynamic robot models are considered. Solutions are presented for a class of formation problems that include formation, maneuvering, and flocking. Graph theory and nonlinear systems theory are the key tools used in the design and stability analysis of the proposed control schemes. Simulation and/or experimental results are presented to illustrate the performance of the controllers. In the first part, we present a leader-follower type solution to the formation maneuvering problem. The solution is based on the graph that models the coordination among the robots being a spanning tree. Our control law incorporates two types of position errors: individual tracking errors and coordination errors for leader-follower pairs in the spanning tree. The control ensures that the robots globally acquire a given planar formation while the formation as a whole globally tracks a desired trajectory, both with uniformly ultimately bounded errors. The control law is first designed at the kinematic level and then extended to the dynamic level. In the latter, we consider that parametric uncertainty exists in the equations of motion. These uncertainties are accounted for by employing an adaptive control scheme. In the second part, we design a distance-based control scheme for the flocking of the nonholonomic agents under the assumption that the desired flocking velocity is known to all agents. The control law is designed at the kinematic level and is based on the rigidity properties of the graph modeling the sensing/control interactions among the robots. A simple input transformation is used to facilitate the control design by converting the nonholonomic model into the single-integrator equation. The resulting control ensures exponential convergence to the desired formation while the formation maneuvers according to a desired, time-varying translational velocity. In the third part, we extend the previous flocking control framework to the case where only a subset of the agents know the desired flocking velocity. The resulting controllers include distributed observers to estimate the unknown quantities. The theory of interconnected systems is used to analyze the stability of the observer-controller system

    Triangular Formation Maneuver Using Designed Mismatched Angles

    This paper investigates the problem of triangular formation maneuver control for mobile 3-agent systems with bearing measurements. Different from controlling rigid formations' maneuvering by introducing a pair of mismatches per distance constraint, we introduce a pair of designed- mismatches per angle constraint which leads to the desired triangular formation shape. Considering that for the control of triangular formations with angle constraints, each agent aims at maintaining its own interior angle, to realize the formation maneuver control we design the mismatches into each agent's own desired interior angle. Two types of designed-mismatch are investigated: time-varying case and constant case. For the time-varying case, under the assumption that each agent can additionally measure the relative position from itself to the formation centroid, the triangular formation maneuver control algorithm is designed such that the desired maneuvering in terms of translation, rotation, and scaling can be realized. For the constant case, under the constraint that the desired triangular shape is known only once for the mismatch design, the triangular formation maneuver control algorithm is also proposed, and the angle dynamics are derived by using the dot product of two bearing vectors. Finally, simulation examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results

    Development of an Autonomous Distributed Fault Management Architecture for Spacecraft Formations Involving Proximity Operations

    CubeSat formations have been identified as a new paradigm for addressing important science questions but are often early adopters of new technologies which carry additional risks. When these missions involve proximity operations, novel fault management architectures are needed to handle these risks. Building on established methods, this paper presents one such architecture that involves a passively safe relative orbit design, interchangeable chief-deputy roles, a formation level fault diagnosis scheme, and an autonomous multi-agent fault handling strategy. The primary focus is to enable the reliable detection of faults occurring on any formation member in real time and the autonomous decision making needed to resolve them while keeping the formation safe from an inter-satellite collision. The NSF-sponsored Virtual Super-resolution Optics with Reconfigurable Swarms (VISORS) mission, which consists of two 6U CubeSats flying in formation 40 meters apart as a distributed solar telescope, is used as a case study for the application of this architecture. The underlying fault analysis, formulation of key elements of the fault detection and response strategies, and the flight software implementation for VISORS are discussed in the paper
