Technological innovation persistence: Literature survey and exploration of the role of organizational innovation

    Get PDF
In this paper, we will review the literature on technological innovation persistence and provide a general theoretical framework to analyze the main determinants of this innovative behavior. Moreover, no previous empirical study has taken into account organizational innovation practices as possible determinants of innovation persistence. We will therefore include them, as previous studies have shown the interaction effects between the two types of innovation, and produce empirical results on technical innovation persistence. A multinomial probit model was used to estimate the likelihood of belonging to each of the three longitudinal innovation profiles. Results confirm the differentiated impact of determinants on process and technological innovation persistence, and the effect of R&D intensity, R&D cooperation and competition intensity. As hypothesized, we also found that organizational innovation is a determinant factor for innovation persistence and, more generally speaking, for technological innovation, in particular organizational practices such as knowledge management and external partnerships.Persistence; Innovation; Technological innovation; Organizational innovation; R&D

Conceptual Model of Knowledge Management and Social Media to Support Learning Process in Higher Education Institution

Nowadays social media has tremendously transformed organizational business process of institution. Higher Education as a place with the majority generation Y, that advances to use technology should realize these situations. With this social media platform, institution may facilitate the knowledge transfer process, then to support collaborative learning from e-learning to social learning. Referring to this phenomenon, this research will design the integration of concepts of knowledge management and social media as a framework to identify the significant components and its relationship to support each other. In this research, we use a systematic literature review from journal and text book to construct this collaboration model. The outcome of this study is collaboration model of knowledge management and social media to support learning process in higher education institution

Knowledge Process Support: A Business Process Study of a Knowledge Management System

Although it seems intuitive that Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) should have a positive impact on the management of knowledge, research has not focused on establishing empirical evidence of this relationship and the subsequent theoretical implications. The management of knowledge encompasses multiple organizational entities and an established KMS must support the knowledge work for each entity. Knowledge processes (generation, codification, and transfer) are embedded in business processes. An application of KMS is needed in order to facilitate these knowledge processes, therefore supporting the business processes. We present evidence of the relationship between a KMS and Knowledge Processes by describing two organizational entities in terms of their different knowledge needs. We provide evidence of how the KMS is utilized by both entities. Survey data was collected from a large semiconductor manufacturer. Results indicate the KMS supports Knowledge Processes in different degrees according to each entity’s knowledge needs. Despite this difference, the two entities have a positive perception of how the KMS impacts Knowledge Processes

Gaining Insight into Enterprise 2.0 by Comparing with Web 2.0: Matrix analysis and instrument development

Emerging Web 2.0 provides an insight into its application to enterprise 2.0 that is currently in an immature state. The effort to apply the successful Web 2.0 to Enterprise 2.0 requires careful analysis of similarity and dissimilarity of “state of the art” social systems such as Web 2.0 and proposed Enterprise 2.0. For this analysis, a knowledge-seeker/sharer paradigm is proposed from the assumption that these two parties may have different perceptions towards the social systems. The paradigm consistently works as a baseline that comparison and contrast of Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 are performed based on. This answer is organized as follows. First, two social systems are compared from knowledge-seekers‟ perspective, knowledge-sharers‟ perspective, and both parties‟ perspective by supporting with relevant literature. Second, two social systems are contrasted from knowledge seekers‟ perspective, knowledge sharers‟ perspective, and both parties‟ perspective by supporting with relevant literature. Third, meaningful implications are suggested from the analyses

KNOWLEDGE SHARING IN A CULTURAL HERITAGE CONTEXT: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY

Once discovered, an archaeological find starts some sort of new life-cycle , throughout which it will cross several events, sometimes repeatedly. Each find brings with it a lot of information (concerning its nature and history). Also each event it will cross (restoration, study, exhibition etc) generates a lot of additional information. All the information gathered are useful, and often crucial, in order to deepen the scientific contribution received by the find, to make every time the best decision about its management, and, in the end, to give a proper sense to its discovery and overall to its expensive conservation. Despite their fundamental role in such domain, the information are often considered as individual knowledge, not specifically managed, almost always not filed in digital archives. Usually they are not available to persons different from the ones implied in each single event. The problem of the use and sharing of the knowledge potentially brought by an archaeological find is further increased by the presence throughout the life-cycle of several professionals that usually work separately. It is then highly interesting to examine a project promoted by an Italian regional Monuments Department, together with six other Italian and European Departments, in order to design and develop a powerful and easy to implement system to solve such problems. By adopting an action research approach, this paper will describe the birth and develop of this project, under a knowledge management perspective, to investigate organizational conditions and IT role in facilitating knowledge creation. The research results demonstrate that some organizational solutions adopted in the project and some system features can promote knowledge creation and sharing in the cultural heritage context, also by reinforcing weak ties among operators

The MinK Framework: Investigating Individual Knowledge Indicators

    Get PDF
Purpose – Effective knowledge management (KM) entails knowledge assessment capability to enable identification of knowledge assets and proper governance of value creation dynamics. Although some studies have attempted to use different methods to measure knowledge at the organisational level, few have addressed the individual knowledge holder. The purpose of this paper is to present a state-of-the-art framework, referred to as MinK, that enables organisations to measure individual knowledge in the business context using a novel diversity of indicators. Design/methodology/approach – The model was developed based on a comprehensive conceptual framework. A pilot study composed of 20 semi- structured interviews elicited valuable feedback from practitioners and was followed by a validation phase in which an electronic questionnaire is used to survey a large sample of senior managers. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the literature by presenting an innovative integrated individual knowledge measurement framework, and proposing a theoretical framework for the pivotal role of individuals in the organisational knowledge environment. Practical implications – The model provides mangers with a valuable tool capable of identifying knowledge holders and supporting effective KM decision making to achieve optimal organisational performance. Results showed that the MinK framework was also well received by industry and accepted as a valid framework

To Share Or Not To Share: An Exploratory Review Of Knowledge Management Systems And Knowledge Sharing In Multinational Corporations

    Get PDF
In the current fluid environment, the challenge for Multinational Corporations (MNCs) is how to accumulate knowledge that stems from various sources, facilitate the management of knowledge, and maximise value generated from all available assets. For this purpose, MNCs use Knowledge Management Systems (KMSs) to share, utilise, and integrate knowledge. This paper seeks to explore how knowledge sharing takes place through the use of KMSs in MNCs. Based on 42 semi-structured interviews, main themes underlying knowledge sharing were identified and summarised in a more holistic conceptual framework. First, Knowledge Management Systems includes three sub-themes: Technology Acceptance, Communication Tools, and KMS Usage. Second, Knowledge Sharing Practices includes the following sub-themes: Content, Willingness to Share and External Factors. The paper clarifies the existing literature on KMSs and KS by proposing a holistic conceptual framework which will help managers to identify ways of initiating knowledge sharing in MNCs
