    Importance of Global Co-innovation Networks: A TCS Case Study

    Today all kinds of innovations and research work is done by partnerships of competent entities each having some specialized skills. Like the development of the global economy, global innovation partnerships have grown considerably and form the basis of most of the sophisticated innovations today. To further streamline and simplify such cooperation, several innovation networks have been formed, both at local and global levels. This paper discusses the different types of innovations and how cooperation can benefit innovation in terms of pooling of resources and sharing of risks. One example of an open global co-innovation network promoted by Tata Consultancy Services, the TCS COIN is taken as a case. It enables venture capitalists, consultants, research agencies, companies and universities form nodes of the network so that each entity can play a meaningful role in the innovation network. Further, two innovation projects implemented using the COIN are discussed.     Unlocking medical leadership’s potential:a multilevel virtuous circle?

    Background and aim: Medical leadership (ML) has been introduced in many countries, promising to support healthcare services improvement and help further system reform through effective leadership behaviours. Despite some evidence of its success, such lofty promises remain unfulfilled. Method: Couched in extant international literature, this paper provides a conceptual framework to analyse ML's potential in the context of healthcare's complex, multifaceted setting. Results: We identify four interrelated levels of analysis, or domains, that influence ML's potential to transform healthcare delivery. These are the healthcare ecosystem domain, the professional domain, the organisational domain and the individual doctor domain. We discuss the tensions between the various actors working in and across these domains and argue that greater multilevel and multistakeholder collaborative working in healthcare is necessary to reprofessionalise and transform healthcare ecosystems

    Fostering an innovation ecosystem for a public digital health platform

    This short paper explores building innovation platforms in the public sector, particularly in public healthcare, through an ecological lens. While existing research has mainly focused on the platform owner\u27s role in orchestrating innovation, this study investigates the strategies used by public organizations and widens the net to analyse how a digital health platform’s complementing actors contribute towards innovation within the ecosystem. The paper further highlights the fundamental difference in market logic between public and private platforms. Using the case study of Helseplattformen, a public digital health platform in central Norway, the study aims to identify platform establishment strategies and ecosystem actor interactions that contribute to innovation emergence. The study contributes both theoretically and practically to digital platforms literature and provides guidance for decision-makers and project managers in the public sector who want to adopt or manage similar digital health platforms

    Business model innovation in SMEs engaging in innovation ecosystems. A decoupling perspective

    Digital technologies have been increasingly affecting our day-to-day activities, drastically reshaping markets and society. The diffusion of new digital technologies\u2014such as social media, cloud computing, mobile computing, 3D printing, and big-data analytics \u2013 is posing firms to challenges, creating opportunities to develop radically new business models. However, despite the growing interest towards this issue, the contribute of digitalisation from the perspective of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is still such an under-investigated topic. SMEs are considered a driving force in most national economies, contributing heavily to employment, innovation and economic growth, but at the same time they often suffer from lack of both financial and human resources. These weaknesses may be compensated by the inflow and outflow of knowledge and capital boosted by technological innovation and participation within innovation ecosystems. The aim of this paper is to understand, through the lens of the institutional theory, how both the relationships established within the ecosystem and the internal organizational capabilities of SMEs impact on business model innovation thanks to the adoption of digital technologies such as Internet of things, big data, and open data. To do so the authors carried out an embedded case study on an Italian Industry 4.0 project which involved several actors (e.g. food SMEs, universities, technology consulting companies, and Piedmont Region). First findings on this ongoing research show that innovation ecosystems could represent a strong driver for developing an innovative business model oriented to value co-creation provided that SMEs already own distinctive dynamic capabilities. Without these capabilities it would be difficult to fully exploit the digital opportunities arising from the relationships among the heterogeneous actors which are part of the project

    Studying innovation ecosystems using ecology theory

    This paper proposes a set of perspectives for studying innovation ecosystems that are based on ecological research. Our perspectives are based on fundamental similarities between natural and business systems. We suggest that innovation ecosystems can be defined as pathways of interlinked business models. Pathways are characterised by the flows they convey not the types of business model that support the flows. These pathways convey material and informational resources, as well as value. Like the nutrient and energy pathways in natural ecosystems. Pathways help to recycle scarce resources such as customer attention and customer-derived information. Business model descriptions are similar to an organism’s genome in that they describe limitations on sensing, acting and understanding. We conceptualise this as the ‘umwelt’; the self-world. These limitations have implications for how firms and customers interact with customers. They have other implications for how firms interact with each other in business model communities and how they accommodate each other. We illustrate and test these ecological perspectives using a case study of a healthcare smartphone app’s ecosystem. We find that our perspectives can be used as novel methods of studying interactions between business models; or to study ecosystem building

    Future of Innovation Thought Leadership Project – Innovation for a Circular Economy

    This ‘thought piece’ considers ways in which the concept of Circular Economy (CE) might be redefined within the innovation ecosystem. The findings of this report suggest that a distinction needs to be made between the innovation activities of circular economy SMEs as opposed to SMEs undertaking CE innovation, and that a CE programme for SMEs based on should be a focus for innovation policy. Through a literature review, a less reductive definition of the CE- traditionally associated with ‘recycling’- in sustainability innovation, emerges. The aim of this report is to provide insights to Innovate UK about how policy can support a CE paradigm shift that can fundamentally change the social and business mindsets around sustainability and CE implementation
