Hierarchical Attention Network for Visually-aware Food Recommendation
Food recommender systems play an important role in assisting users to
identify the desired food to eat. Deciding what food to eat is a complex and
multi-faceted process, which is influenced by many factors such as the
ingredients, appearance of the recipe, the user's personal preference on food,
and various contexts like what had been eaten in the past meals. In this work,
we formulate the food recommendation problem as predicting user preference on
recipes based on three key factors that determine a user's choice on food,
namely, 1) the user's (and other users') history; 2) the ingredients of a
recipe; and 3) the descriptive image of a recipe. To address this challenging
problem, we develop a dedicated neural network based solution Hierarchical
Attention based Food Recommendation (HAFR) which is capable of: 1) capturing
the collaborative filtering effect like what similar users tend to eat; 2)
inferring a user's preference at the ingredient level; and 3) learning user
preference from the recipe's visual images. To evaluate our proposed method, we
construct a large-scale dataset consisting of millions of ratings from
AllRecipes.com. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms several
competing recommender solutions like Factorization Machine and Visual Bayesian
Personalized Ranking with an average improvement of 12%, offering promising
results in predicting user preference for food. Codes and dataset will be

Integration via Meaning: Using the Semantic Web to deliver Web Services

The former allows the construction of distributed systems across the WWW by providing a lightweight middleware architecture. The latter provides an infrastructure for accessing resources on the WWW via their relationships with respect to conceptual descriptions. In this paper, I shall review the progress undertaken in each of these two areas. Further, I shall argue that in order for the aims of both the Semantic Web and the Web Services activities to be successful, then the Web Service architecture needs to be augmented by concepts and tools of the Semantic Web. This infrastructure will allow resource discovery, brokering and access to be enabled in a standardised, integrated and interoperable manner. Finally, I survey
the CLRC Information Technology R&D programme to show how it is contributing to the development of this future infrastructure
An integrated ranking algorithm for efficient information computing in social networks
Social networks have ensured the expanding disproportion between the face of
WWW stored traditionally in search engine repositories and the actual ever
changing face of Web. Exponential growth of web users and the ease with which
they can upload contents on web highlights the need of content controls on
material published on the web. As definition of search is changing,
socially-enhanced interactive search methodologies are the need of the hour.
Ranking is pivotal for efficient web search as the search performance mainly
depends upon the ranking results. In this paper new integrated ranking model
based on fused rank of web object based on popularity factor earned over only
valid interlinks from multiple social forums is proposed. This model identifies
relationships between web objects in separate social networks based on the
object inheritance graph. Experimental study indicates the effectiveness of

Semantic multimedia remote display for mobile thin clients
Current remote display technologies for mobile thin clients convert practically all types of graphical content into sequences of images rendered by the client. Consequently, important information concerning the content semantics is lost. The present paper goes beyond this bottleneck by developing a semantic multimedia remote display. The principle consists of representing the graphical content as a real-time interactive multimedia scene graph. The underlying architecture features novel components for scene-graph creation and management, as well as for user interactivity handling. The experimental setup considers the Linux X windows system and BiFS/LASeR multimedia scene technologies on the server and client sides, respectively. The implemented solution was benchmarked against currently deployed solutions (VNC and Microsoft-RDP), by considering text editing and WWW browsing applications. The quantitative assessments demonstrate: (1) visual quality expressed by seven objective metrics, e.g., PSNR values between 30 and 42 dB or SSIM values larger than 0.9999; (2) downlink bandwidth gain factors ranging from 2 to 60; (3) real-time user event management expressed by network round-trip time reduction by factors of 4-6 and by uplink bandwidth gain factors from 3 to 10; (4) feasible CPU activity, larger than in the RDP case but reduced by a factor of 1.5 with respect to the VNC-HEXTILE
All Who Wander: On the Prevalence and Characteristics of Multi-community Engagement
Although analyzing user behavior within individual communities is an active
and rich research domain, people usually interact with multiple communities
both on- and off-line. How do users act in such multi-community environments?
Although there are a host of intriguing aspects to this question, it has
received much less attention in the research community in comparison to the
intra-community case. In this paper, we examine three aspects of
multi-community engagement: the sequence of communities that users post to, the
language that users employ in those communities, and the feedback that users
receive, using longitudinal posting behavior on Reddit as our main data source,
and DBLP for auxiliary experiments. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of
features drawn from these aspects in predicting users' future level of
activity.
One might expect that a user's trajectory mimics the "settling-down" process
in real life: an initial exploration of sub-communities before settling down
into a few niches. However, we find that the users in our data continually post
in new communities; moreover, as time goes on, they post increasingly evenly
among a more diverse set of smaller communities. Interestingly, it seems that
users that eventually leave the community are "destined" to do so from the very
beginning, in the sense of showing significantly different "wandering" patterns
very early on in their trajectories; this finding has potentially important
design implications for community maintainers. Our multi-community perspective
also allows us to investigate the "situation vs. personality" debate from

Applying digital content management to support localisation
The retrieval and presentation of digital content such as that on the World Wide Web (WWW) is a substantial area of research. While recent years have seen huge expansion in the size of web-based archives that can be searched efficiently by commercial search engines, the presentation of potentially relevant content is still limited to ranked document lists represented by simple text snippets or image keyframe surrogates. There is expanding interest in techniques to personalise the presentation of content to improve the richness and effectiveness of the user experience. One of the most significant challenges to achieving this is the increasingly multilingual nature of this data, and the need to provide suitably localised responses to users based on this content. The Digital Content Management (DCM) track of the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL) is seeking to develop technologies to support advanced personalised access and presentation of information by combining elements from the existing research areas of Adaptive Hypermedia and Information Retrieval. The combination of these technologies is intended to produce significant improvements in the way users access information. We review key features of these technologies and introduce early ideas for how these technologies can support localisation and localised content before concluding with some impressions of future directions in DCM
Personalised trails and learner profiling within e-learning environments
This deliverable focuses on personalisation and personalised trails. We begin by introducing and defining the concepts of personalisation and personalised trails. Personalisation requires that a user profile be stored, and so we assess currently available standard profile schemas and discuss the requirements for a profile to support personalised learning. We then review techniques for providing personalisation and some systems that implement these techniques, and discuss some of the issues around evaluating personalisation systems. We look especially at the use of learning and cognitive styles to support personalised learning, and also consider personalisation in the field of mobile learning, which has a slightly different take on the subject, and in commercially available systems, where personalisation support is found to currently be only at quite a low level. We conclude with a summary of the lessons to be learned from our review of personalisation and personalised trails
