    A foundation for machine learning in design

    This paper presents a formalism for considering the issues of learning in design. A foundation for machine learning in design (MLinD) is defined so as to provide answers to basic questions on learning in design, such as, "What types of knowledge can be learnt?", "How does learning occur?", and "When does learning occur?". Five main elements of MLinD are presented as the input knowledge, knowledge transformers, output knowledge, goals/reasons for learning, and learning triggers. Using this foundation, published systems in MLinD were reviewed. The systematic review presents a basis for validating the presented foundation. The paper concludes that there is considerable work to be carried out in order to fully formalize the foundation of MLinD

    Enhancing Undergraduate AI Courses through Machine Learning Projects

    It is generally recognized that an undergraduate introductory Artificial Intelligence course is challenging to teach. This is, in part, due to the diverse and seemingly disconnected core topics that are typically covered. The paper presents work funded by the National Science Foundation to address this problem and to enhance the student learning experience in the course. Our work involves the development of an adaptable framework for the presentation of core AI topics through a unifying theme of machine learning. A suite of hands-on semester-long projects are developed, each involving the design and implementation of a learning system that enhances a commonly-deployed application. The projects use machine learning as a unifying theme to tie together the core AI topics. In this paper, we will first provide an overview of our model and the projects being developed and will then present in some detail our experiences with one of the projects – Web User Profiling which we have used in our AI class

    This paper presents work on a collaborative project funded by the National Science Foundation that incorporates machine learning as a unifying theme to teach fundamental concepts typically covered in the introductory Artificial Intelligence courses. The project involves the development of an adaptable framework for the presentation of core AI topics. This is accomplished through the development, implementation, and testing of a suite of adaptable, hands-on laboratory projects that can be closely integrated into the AI course. Through the design and implementation of learning systems that enhance commonly-deployed applications, our model acknowledges that intelligent systems are best taught through their application to challenging problems. The goals of the project are to (1) enhance the student learning experience in the AI course, (2) increase student interest and motivation to learn AI by providing a framework for the presentation of the major AI topics that emphasizes the strong connection between AI and computer science and engineering, and (3) highlight the bridge that machine learning provides between AI technology and modern software engineering

    Innovative modeling framework of chloride resistance of recycled aggregate concrete using ensemble-machine-learning methods

    This study investigates the feasibility of introducing machine learning algorithms to predict the diffusion resistance to chloride penetration of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). A total of 226 samples collated from published literature were used to train and test the developed machine learning framework, which integrated four standalone models and two ensemble models. The hyperparameters involved were fine-tuned by grid search and 10-fold cross-validation. Results showed that all the models had good performance in predicting the chloride penetration resistance of RAC and among them, the gradient boosting model outperformed the others. The water content was identified as the most critical factor affecting the chloride ion permeability of RAC based on the standardized regression coefficient analysis. The model’s interpretability was greatly improved through a two-way partial dependence analysis. Finally, based on the proposed machine learning models, a performance-based mixture design method and a service life prediction approach for RAC were developed, thereby offering novel and robust design tools for achieving more durable and resilient development goals in procuring sustainable concrete.This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (52108123), Guangdong Basic and Applied Basic Research Foundation (2020A1515110101), and Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Modern Civil Engineering Technology (2021B1212040003)

    Tailoring Machine Learning for Process Mining

    Machine learning models are routinely integrated into process mining pipelines to carry out tasks like data transformation, noise reduction, anomaly detection, classification, and prediction. Often, the design of such models is based on some ad-hoc assumptions about the corresponding data distributions, which are not necessarily in accordance with the non-parametric distributions typically observed with process data. Moreover, the learning procedure they follow ignores the constraints concurrency imposes to process data. Data encoding is a key element to smooth the mismatch between these assumptions but its potential is poorly exploited. In this paper, we argue that a deeper insight into the issues raised by training machine learning models with process data is crucial to ground a sound integration of process mining and machine learning. Our analysis of such issues is aimed at laying the foundation for a methodology aimed at correctly aligning machine learning with process mining requirements and stimulating the research to elaborate in this direction.Comment: 16 page

    KARL: A Knowledge-Assisted Retrieval Language

    Data classification and storage are tasks typically performed by application specialists. In contrast, information users are primarily non-computer specialists who use information in their decision-making and other activities. Interaction efficiency between such users and the computer is often reduced by machine requirements and resulting user reluctance to use the system. This thesis examines the problems associated with information retrieval for non-computer specialist users, and proposes a method for communicating in restricted English that uses knowledge of the entities involved, relationships between entities, and basic English language syntax and semantics to translate the user requests into formal queries. The proposed method includes an intelligent dictionary, syntax and semantic verifiers, and a formal query generator. In addition, the proposed system has a learning capability that can improve portability and performance. With the increasing demand for efficient human-machine communication, the significance of this thesis becomes apparent. As human resources become more valuable, software systems that will assist in improving the human-machine interface will be needed and research addressing new solutions will be of utmost importance. This thesis presents an initial design and implementation as a foundation for further research and development into the emerging field of natural language database query systems

The focus on Software Engineering side in the recent years has been on trying to automate the various phases of SDLC namely- Requirements Analysis, Design, Coding, Testing and Operations and Maintenance. Incorporating latest trending technologies such as Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence into various phases of SDLC, could facilitate for better execution of each of these phases. This in turn helps to cut-down costs, save time, improve the efficiency and reduce the manual effort required for each of these phases. The proposed approach develops around the systematic application of advanced machine learning techniques and, in particular, unsupervised deep learning and probabilistic generative models for system-wide learning, modeling, optimization, and data representation. Moreover, in COBANETS, we propose to combine this learning architecture with the emerging network virtualization paradigms, which make it possible to actuate automatic optimization and reconfiguration strategies at the system level, thus fully unleashing the potential of the learning approach. Compared with the past and current research efforts in this area, the technical approach outlined in this paper is deeply interdisciplinary and more comprehensive, calling for the synergic combination of expertise of computer scientists, communications and networking engineers, and cognitive scientists, with the ultimate aim of breaking new ground through a profound rethinking of how the modern understanding of cognition can be used in the management and optimization of telecommunication network
