A distributed activity scheduling algorithm for wireless sensor networks with partial coverage
One of the most important design objectives in wireless sensor networks (WSN) is minimizing the energy consumption since these networks are expected to operate in harsh conditions where the recharging of batteries is impractical, if not impossible. The sleep scheduling mechanism allows sensors to sleep intermittently in order to reduce energy consumption and extend network lifetime. In applications where 100% coverage of the network field is not crucial, allowing the coverage to drop below full coverage while keeping above a predetermined threshold, i.e., partial coverage, can further increase the networklifetime. In this paper, we develop the distributed adaptivesleep scheduling algorithm (DASSA) for WSNs with partial coverage. DASSA does not require locationinformation of sensors while maintaining connectivity andsatisfying a user defined coverage target. In DASSA, nodesuse the residual energy levels and feedback from the sinkfor scheduling the activity of their neighbors. This feedbackmechanism reduces the randomness in scheduling thatwould otherwise occur due to the absence of locationinformation. The performance of DASSA is compared withan integer linear programming (ILP) based centralizedsleep scheduling algorithm (CSSA), which is devised tofind the maximum number of rounds the network cansurvive assuming that the location information of all sensorsis available. DASSA is also compared with thedecentralized DGT algorithm. DASSA attains networklifetimes up to 92% of the centralized solution and it achieves significantly longer lifetimes compared with the DGT algorithm. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2008
A Coverage Monitoring algorithm based on Learning Automata for Wireless Sensor Networks
To cover a set of targets with known locations within an area with limited or
prohibited ground access using a wireless sensor network, one approach is to
deploy the sensors remotely, from an aircraft. In this approach, the lack of
precise sensor placement is compensated by redundant de-ployment of sensor
nodes. This redundancy can also be used for extending the lifetime of the
network, if a proper scheduling mechanism is available for scheduling the
active and sleep times of sensor nodes in such a way that each node is in
active mode only if it is required to. In this pa-per, we propose an efficient
scheduling method based on learning automata and we called it LAML, in which
each node is equipped with a learning automaton, which helps the node to select
its proper state (active or sleep), at any given time. To study the performance
of the proposed method, computer simulations are conducted. Results of these
simulations show that the pro-posed scheduling method can better prolong the
lifetime of the network in comparison to similar existing method
Markov Decision Processes with Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of autonomous and resource-limited
devices. The devices cooperate to monitor one or more physical phenomena within
an area of interest. WSNs operate as stochastic systems because of randomness
in the monitored environments. For long service time and low maintenance cost,
WSNs require adaptive and robust methods to address data exchange, topology
formulation, resource and power optimization, sensing coverage and object
detection, and security challenges. In these problems, sensor nodes are to make
optimized decisions from a set of accessible strategies to achieve design
goals. This survey reviews numerous applications of the Markov decision process
(MDP) framework, a powerful decision-making tool to develop adaptive algorithms
and protocols for WSNs. Furthermore, various solution methods are discussed and
compared to serve as a guide for using MDPs in WSNs
Thirty Years of Machine Learning: The Road to Pareto-Optimal Wireless Networks
Future wireless networks have a substantial potential in terms of supporting
a broad range of complex compelling applications both in military and civilian
fields, where the users are able to enjoy high-rate, low-latency, low-cost and
reliable information services. Achieving this ambitious goal requires new radio
techniques for adaptive learning and intelligent decision making because of the
complex heterogeneous nature of the network structures and wireless services.
Machine learning (ML) algorithms have great success in supporting big data
analytics, efficient parameter estimation and interactive decision making.
Hence, in this article, we review the thirty-year history of ML by elaborating
on supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep
learning. Furthermore, we investigate their employment in the compelling
applications of wireless networks, including heterogeneous networks (HetNets),
cognitive radios (CR), Internet of things (IoT), machine to machine networks
(M2M), and so on. This article aims for assisting the readers in clarifying the
motivation and methodology of the various ML algorithms, so as to invoke them
for hitherto unexplored services as well as scenarios of future wireless

Local Approximation Schemes for Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks
We present two local approaches that yield polynomial-time approximation schemes (PTAS) for the Maximum Independent Set and Minimum Dominating Set problem in unit disk graphs. The algorithms run locally in each node and compute a (1+ε)-approximation to the problems at hand for any given ε > 0. The time complexity of both algorithms is O(TMIS + log*! n/εO(1)), where TMIS is the time required to compute a maximal independent set in the graph, and n denotes the number of nodes. We then extend these results to a more general class of graphs in which the maximum number of pair-wise independent nodes in every r-neighborhood is at most polynomial in r. Such graphs of polynomially bounded growth are introduced as a more realistic model for wireless networks and they generalize existing models, such as unit disk graphs or coverage area graphs
LIS: Localization based on an intelligent distributed fuzzy system applied to a WSN
The localization of the sensor nodes is a fundamental problem in wireless sensor networks.
There are a lot of different kinds of solutions in the literature. Some of them use external
devices like GPS, while others use special hardware or implicit parameters in wireless
communications.
In applications like wildlife localization in a natural environment, where the power available
and the weight are big restrictions, the use of hungry energy devices like GPS or hardware
that add extra weight like mobile directional antenna is not a good solution.
Due to these reasons it would be better to use the localization’s implicit characteristics in
communications, such as connectivity, number of hops or RSSI. The measurement related
to these parameters are currently integrated in most radio devices. These measurement
techniques are based on the beacons’ transmissions between the devices.
In the current study, a novel tracking distributed method, called LIS, for localization of
the sensor nodes using moving devices in a network of static nodes, which have no additional
hardware requirements is proposed.
The position is obtained with the combination of two algorithms; one based on a local
node using a fuzzy system to obtain a partial solution and the other based on a centralized
method which merges all the partial solutions. The centralized algorithm is based on the
calculation of the centroid of the partial solutions.
Advantages of using fuzzy system versus the classical Centroid Localization (CL)
algorithm without fuzzy preprocessing are compared with an ad hoc simulator made for
testing localization algorithms.
With this simulator, it is demonstrated that the proposed method obtains less localization
