    Automating Tolerance Synthesis: A Framework and Tools

    This paper describes CASCADE-T—a new approach to tolerance synthesis that uses a complete representation of the conditional tolerance relations that exist between features of a part under design. Conditional tolerances are automatically determined from functional requirements and shape information. Tolerance primitives based on the virtual boundary requirements approach to tolerance representation are composed to form more complex tolerance relationships. Artificial intelligence techniques, including a constraint network, frame-based system, and dependency tracking are used to support flexible and detailed computation for tolerance analysis and synthesis

    Simulation of hyperelastic materials in real-time using Deep Learning

    The finite element method (FEM) is among the most commonly used numerical methods for solving engineering problems. Due to its computational cost, various ideas have been introduced to reduce computation times, such as domain decomposition, parallel computing, adaptive meshing, and model order reduction. In this paper we present U-Mesh: a data-driven method based on a U-Net architecture that approximates the non-linear relation between a contact force and the displacement field computed by a FEM algorithm. We show that deep learning, one of the latest machine learning methods based on artificial neural networks, can enhance computational mechanics through its ability to encode highly non-linear models in a compact form. Our method is applied to two benchmark examples: a cantilever beam and an L-shape subject to moving punctual loads. A comparison between our method and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is done through the paper. The results show that U-Mesh can perform very fast simulations on various geometries, mesh resolutions and number of input forces with very small errors

    Repairing triangle meshes built from scanned point cloud

    The Reverse Engineering process consists of a succession of operations that aim at creating a digital representation of a physical model. The reconstructed geometric model is often a triangle mesh built from a point cloud acquired with a scanner. Depending on both the object complexity and the scanning process, some areas of the object outer surface may never be accessible, thus inducing some deficiencies in the point cloud and, as a consequence, some holes in the resulting mesh. This is simply not acceptable in an integrated design process where the geometric models are often shared between the various applications (e.g. design, simulation, manufacturing). In this paper, we propose a complete toolbox to fill in these undesirable holes. The hole contour is first cleaned to remove badly-shaped triangles that are due to the scanner noise. A topological grid is then inserted and deformed to satisfy blending conditions with the surrounding mesh. In our approach, the shape of the inserted mesh results from the minimization of a quadratic function based on a linear mechanical model that is used to approximate the curvature variation between the inner and surrounding meshes. Additional geometric constraints can also be specified to further shape the inserted mesh. The proposed approach is illustrated with some examples coming from our prototype software

    Range-Point Migration-Based Image Expansion Method Exploiting Fully Polarimetric Data for UWB Short-Range Radar

    Ultrawideband radar with high-range resolution is a promising technology for use in short-range 3-D imaging applications, in which optical cameras are not applicable. One of the most efficient 3-D imaging methods is the range-point migration (RPM) method, which has a definite advantage for the synthetic aperture radar approach in terms of computational burden, high accuracy, and high spatial resolution. However, if an insufficient aperture size or angle is provided, these kinds of methods cannot reconstruct the whole target structure due to the absence of reflection signals from large part of target surface. To expand the 3-D image obtained by RPM, this paper proposes an image expansion method by incorporating the RPM feature and fully polarimetric data-based machine learning approach. Following ellipsoid-based scattering analysis and learning with a neural network, this method expresses the target image as an aggregation of parts of ellipsoids, which significantly expands the original image by the RPM method without sacrificing the reconstruction accuracy. The results of numerical simulation based on 3-D finite-difference time-domain analysis verify the effectiveness of our proposed method, in terms of image-expansion criteria

    Cell motility: a viscous fingering analysis of active gels

    The symmetry breaking of the actin network from radial to longitudinal symmetry has been identified as the major mechanism for keratocytes (fish cells) motility on solid substrate. For strong friction coefficient, the two dimensional actin flow which includes the polymerisation at the edge and depolymerisation in the bulk can be modelled as a Darcy flow, the cell shape and dynamics being then modelled by standard complex analysis methods. We use the theory of active gels to describe the orientational order of the filaments which varies from the border to the bulk. We show analytically that the reorganisation of the cortex is enough to explain the motility of the cell and find the velocity as a function of the orientation order parameter in the bulk.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in EPJ - Plu
