    Crowdsourced Live Streaming over the Cloud

    Empowered by today's rich tools for media generation and distribution, and the convenient Internet access, crowdsourced streaming generalizes the single-source streaming paradigm by including massive contributors for a video channel. It calls a joint optimization along the path from crowdsourcers, through streaming servers, to the end-users to minimize the overall latency. The dynamics of the video sources, together with the globalized request demands and the high computation demand from each sourcer, make crowdsourced live streaming challenging even with powerful support from modern cloud computing. In this paper, we present a generic framework that facilitates a cost-effective cloud service for crowdsourced live streaming. Through adaptively leasing, the cloud servers can be provisioned in a fine granularity to accommodate geo-distributed video crowdsourcers. We present an optimal solution to deal with service migration among cloud instances of diverse lease prices. It also addresses the location impact to the streaming quality. To understand the performance of the proposed strategies in the realworld, we have built a prototype system running over the planetlab and the Amazon/Microsoft Cloud. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that the effectiveness of our solution in terms of deployment cost and streaming quality

    A Web-based IPTV Content Syndication System for Personalized Content Guide

    In this paper, we propose a web-based content syndication system in which users can easily choose IPTV contents. This system generates personalized content guide to provide a list of IPTV contents with respect to user’s interests and statistics information of their online social community. For this, IPTV contents and relevant metadata are collected from various sources and transformed. Then the service and content metadata are processed by user metadata including audience measurement and community metadata. The metadata flows are separated from content flows of transport network. The implementation of IPTV content syndication system demonstrates how to arrange IPTV contents efficiently from content providers to the end user’s screen. We also show that the user metadata including online community information are important for the system’s performance and the user’s satisfaction

    Retrospective Study of Healthcare Resources Developed for Patients by Interprofessional Teams

    Wayne State University (WSU) emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary education by having students participate in an Interprofessional Team Visit (IPTV) program. A 60-minute virtual visit is conducted to assess adults aged over 50 years within the Detroit Metropolitan Area (Metro Detroit) community. This project was designed to prepare healthcare students in evaluating the mental, physical, and social health aspects of assigned patients based on specific disciplinary assessments. Upon completion of assessments, the interdisciplinary team provided the patient with resources based on the team and the patient\u27s agreed-upon area of concern. Twenty-eight IPTV teams, consisting of a medical and occupational therapy student and a healthcare professional student from another discipline studying at WSU, were randomly created. The IPTV resource guides created by each team were reviewed and sorted into two categories based on the health or social need of the individual patient. The data identified three main areas of interest, which included medication management, diet and exercise plans, and the use of technology to stay connected to medical professionals, friends, and family. The purpose of this report is to assess the IPTV program’s findings and analyze patients’ concerns based on health or social needs and the resources presented to them

    Utilization of Flow Concept for Digital Service Requirements Prioritization

    We argue that the concept of flow can be useful in investigating how requirements for digital services can be analyzed. We apply Novak et al\u27s (2000) framework to analyze how flow can be utilized for requirements prioritization for digital services. Our findings indicate that the flow can be very useful for requirements development. Furthermore, the findings show that the flow can be potentially used for understanding experiential- and task-oriented user activities. Therefore, we conclude that the flow should be considered as a service requirements prioritization metric not only for digital services dominated by hedonic utility needs by users, but with all digital services. This calls for further research in service requirements method development and on how flow impacts user experience

    Co-opetition of TV broadcasters in online video markets : a winning strategy?

    This article focuses on TV broadcasters adopting co-opetition strategies for launching online video services. It is claimed that the emergence of online video platforms like YouTube and Netflix is driving TV broadcasters to collaborate with their closest competitors to reduce costs and reach the necessary scale in the global marketplace. The article sheds light on online video platforms that were developed following a co-opetition strategy (Hulu and YouView). The establishment of joint ventures in online video, however, has been scrutinised by competition authorities which fear that collaboration between close competitors lessens rivalry and reduces consumer choice. Therefore, several co-opetition projects (among others BBC’s Kangaroo and Germany’s Gold) have been prohibited by competition authorities
