    A distributed Workflow Management System based on Cooperative Agents

    Workflow Management Systems (WFMS) are a widespread solution, used both by business companies and public administrations, to automate processes . In the recent years there have been great efforts in the industry to create standards to make possible efficient interoperability between heterogeneous WFMS (Cross-Organizational Workflow). On another scale, certain fields of application need a distributed WFMS, capable of sustain unpredictable loss of connection between its parts, which may need to operate autonomously. I will explore the possibility that such a system can be obtained through the use of those paradigms and technologies introduced for Cross-Organizational Workflow, where the collaborating Workflow Engines are personal agents, designed to run on devices with limited computational power, and acting as peers.These agents will then cooperate in order to enact the business processes

    Agent-Based Enhanced Workflow in Manufacturing Information Systems: the MAKE-IT Approach

    Manufacturing is one of the main fields of application of software agent technology. In this respect, several current research projects focus on workflow management, with the aim of an integration and coordination among plant and business activities. In section I, the state of the art is presented, relevant to software agents and to the technologies currently adopted in the exploitation of agents in manufacturing information systems. In section II, the possibility of developing real-time agents at the shop floor level is investigated. In section III, the MAKE-IT (Manufacturing Agents in a Knowledgebased Environment driven by Internet Technologies) approach to agent-based enhanced workflow in manufacturing information system is presented. Finally section IV presents our conclusions

    Workflow-Net Based Cooperative Multi-Agent Systems

    Workflow-nets are mathematical frameworks that are used to formally describe, model and implement workflows. First, we propose critical section workflow nets (abbreviated WFCSnet). This framework allows feedbacks in workflow systems while ensuring the soundness of the workflow. Feedback is generally not recommended in workflow systems as they threaten the soundness of the system. The proposed WFCSnet allows safe feedback and limits the maximum number of activities per workflow as required. A theorem for soundness of WFCSnet is presented. Serializability, Separability, Quasi-liveness and CS-Properties of WFCSnet are examined and some theorems and lemmas are proposed to mathematically formalize them. In this thesis, we define some formal constructs that we then build upon. We define the smallest formal sub-workflow that we call a unit. We propose some mathematical characteristics for the unit and show how it can be used. We study similarities between units and whether two units can be used interchangeably or not. We then use composites out of simple units to build more complex constructs and we study their properties. We define the concept of cooperation and propose a mathematical definition of the concept. We discuss the concept of task coverage and how it affects cooperation. We claim that task coverage is necessary for any task to be achieved and therefore, a necessity for cooperation. We use mathematical methods to determine the task coverage and the candidate cooperative partners based on their capabilities that can contribute to the desired task. Workflow-net based cooperative behaviour among agents is proposed. First, we propose a cooperative algebra, which takes the desired objective of cooperation as a plan and then transforms this plan into a workflow-net structure describing dependencies and concurrency among sub-workflow elements constituting the overall plan. Our proposed cooperative algebra converts the plan into a set of matrices that model the cooperative workflow among agents. We then propose a cooperative framework with operators that assign tasks to agents based on their capabilities to achieve the required task

    A Model of Dynamic Resource Allocation in Workflow Systems

    Current collaborative work environments are characterized by dynamically changing organizational structures. Although there have been several efforts to refine work distribution, especially in workflow management, most literature assumes a static database approach which captures organizational roles, groups and hierarchies and implements a dynamic roles based agent assignment protocol. However, in practice only partial information may be available for organizational models, and in turn a large number of exceptions may emerge at the time of work assignment. In this paper we present an organizational model based on a policy based normative system. The model is based on a combination of an intentional logic of agency and a flexible, but computationally feasible, non-monotonic formalism (Defeasible Logic). Although this paper focuses on the model specification, the proposed approach to modelling agent societies provides a means of reasoning with partial and unpredictable information as is typical of organizational agents in workflow system

    Knowledge-based process management – an approach to handling adaptive workflow

    In recent years, many organisations have found enterprise modelling, especially business process modelling, to be an effective tool for managing organisational change. The application of business processing modelling has brought benefits to many organisations, but the models developed tend to be used for reference during business operations and re-engineering activities; they rarely play an active role in supporting the day-to-day execution of the processes. While workflow management systems are widely used for the streamlined management of "administrative" business processes, current systems are unable to cope with the more dynamic situations encountered in ad-hoc and collaborative processes [1]. A system that supports complex and dynamically changing processes is required. There is increasing interest in making workflow systems more adaptive [8][20] and using knowledge-based techniques to provide more flexible process management support than is possible Published in Knowledge-based Systems, Vol 16, 2003, pp149-160 Page 2 using current workflow systems [4][21]. This paper describes the results of a collaborative project between Loughborough University and the University of Edinburgh. ICI and Unilever were industrial partners on the project, providing real business requirements in the application domain. The project investigated the use of ontologies, agents and knowledge based planning techniques to provide support for adaptive workflow or flexible workflow management, especially in the area of new product development within the chemical industries

    Trust and Risk Relationship Analysis on a Workflow Basis: A Use Case

    Trust and risk are often seen in proportion to each other; as such, high trust may induce low risk and vice versa. However, recent research argues that trust and risk relationship is implicit rather than proportional. Considering that trust and risk are implicit, this paper proposes for the first time a novel approach to view trust and risk on a basis of a W3C PROV provenance data model applied in a healthcare domain. We argue that high trust in healthcare domain can be placed in data despite of its high risk, and low trust data can have low risk depending on data quality attributes and its provenance. This is demonstrated by our trust and risk models applied to the BII case study data. The proposed theoretical approach first calculates risk values at each workflow step considering PROV concepts and second, aggregates the final risk score for the whole provenance chain. Different from risk model, trust of a workflow is derived by applying DS/AHP method. The results prove our assumption that trust and risk relationship is implicit
