    National audienceIn order to evaluate the contribution of Embodied (Animated) Conversational Agents (ECAs) to the effectiveness and usability of human-computer interaction, we developed a software platform meant to collect usage data. This platform, which implements the wizard of Oz paradigm, makes it possible to simulate user interfaces integrating ACAs for any Windows software application. It can also save and "replay" a rich interaction trace including user and system events, screen captures, users' speech and eye fixations. This platform has been used to assess users' subjective judgements and reactions to a multimodal online help system meant to facilitate the use of software for the general public (Flash). The online help system is embodied using a 3D talking head (developed by FT R&D) which "says" oral help messages illustrated with Flash screen copies

    We present ALTCAI, a Wizard of Oz Embodied Conversational Agent that has been developed to explore the use of interactive agents as an effective and engaging tool for delivering health and well-being advice to expectant and nursing mothers in Nigeria. This paper briefly describes the motivation and context for its creation, ALTCAI's various components, and presents a discussion on its adaptability and potential uses in other contexts, as well as on potential future work on extending its functionality

    Interactive narration with a child: impact of prosody and facial expressions

    International audienceIntelligent Virtual Agents are suitable means for interactive sto-rytelling for children. The engagement level of child interaction with virtual agents is a challenging issue in this area. However, the characteristics of child-agent interaction received moderate to little attention in scientific studies whereas such knowledge may be crucial to design specific applications. This article proposes a Wizard of Oz platform for interactive narration. An experimental study in the context of interactive story-telling exploiting this platform is presented to evaluate the impact of agent prosody and facial expressions on child participation during storytelling. The results show that the use of the virtual agent with prosody and facial expression modalities improves the engagement of children in interaction during the narrative sessions

    Say Hello to Your New Automated Tutor – A Structured Literature Review on Pedagogical Conversational Agents

    In this paper, we present the current state of the art of using conversational agents for educational purposes. These so-called pedagogical conversational agents are a specialized type of e-learning and intelligent tutoring systems. The main difference to traditional e-learning and intelligent tutoring systems is that they interact with learners using natural language dialogs, e.g. in the form of chatbots. For the sake of our research project, we analyzed current trends in the research stream as well as research gaps. Our results show for instance that (1) there is a trend towards using mobile conversational agents in education, (2) a proper generalization of existing research results (e.g. design knowledge) is missing, and (3) there is a need for comprehensive in-depth evaluation studies and corresponding process models. Based on our results, we outline a research agenda for future research studies

    Designing and Implementing Embodied Agents: Learning from Experience

    In this paper, we provide an overview of part of our experience in designing and implementing some of the embodied agents and talking faces that we have used for our research into human computer interaction. We focus on the techniques that were used and evaluate this with respect to the purpose that the agents and faces were to serve and the costs involved in producing and maintaining the software. We discuss the function of this research and development in relation to the educational programme of our graduate students

    Designing an Adaptive Embodied Conversational Agent for Health Literacy: a User Study

    Access to healthcare advice is crucial to promote healthy societies. Many factors shape how access might be constrained, such as economic status, education or, as the COVID-19 pandemic has shown, remote consultations with health practitioners. Our work focuses on providing pre/post-natal advice to maternal women. A salient factor of our work concerns the design and deployment of embodied conversation agents (ECAs) which can sense the (health) literacy of users and adapt to scaffold user engagement in this setting. We present an account of a Wizard of Oz user study of `ALTCAI’, an ECA with three modes of interaction (i.e., adaptive speech and text, adaptive ECA, and non-adaptive ECA). We compare reported engagement with these modes from 44 maternal women who have differing levels of literacy. The study shows that a combination of embodiment and adaptivity scaffolds reported engagement, but matters of health-literacy and language introduce nuanced considerations for the design of ECAs

    Agents united:An open platform for multi-agent conversational systems

    The development of applications with intelligent virtual agents (IVA) often comes with integration of multiple complex components. In this article we present the Agents United Platform: an open source platform that researchers and developers can use as a starting point to setup their own multi-IVA applications. The new platform provides developers with a set of integrated components in a sense-remember-think-act architecture. Integrated components are a sensor framework, memory component, Topic Selection Engine, interaction manager (Flipper), two dialogue execution engines, and two behaviour realisers (ASAP and GRETA) of which the agents can seamlessly interact with each other. This article discusses the platform and its individual components. It also highlights some of the novelties that arise from the integration of components and elaborates on directions for future work

    HAI Alice -An Information-Providing Closed-Domain Dialog Corpus

    International audienceThe contribution of this paper is twofold: 1) we provide a public corpus for Human-Agent Interaction (where the agent is controlled by a Wizard of Oz) and 2) we show a study on verbal alignment in Human-Agent Interaction, to exemplify the corpus' use. In our recordings for the Human-Agent Interaction Alice-corpus (HAI Alice-corpus), participants talked to a wizarded agent, who provided them with information about the book Alice in Wonderland and its author. The wizard had immediate and almost full control over the agent's verbal and nonverbal behavior, as the wizard provided the agent's speech through his own voice and his facial expressions were directly copied onto the agent. The agent's hand gestures were controlled through a button interface. Data was collected to create a corpus with unexpected situations, such as misunderstandings, (accidental) false information, and interruptions. The HAI Alice-corpus consists of transcribed audio-video recordings of 15 conversations (more than 900 utterances) between users and the wizarded agent. As a use-case example, we measured the verbal alignment between the user and the agent. The paper contains information about the setup of the data collection, the unexpected situations and a description of our verbal alignment study
