    Digital Signal Processing for Optical Communications and Coherent LiDAR

    Internet data traffic within data centre, access and metro networks is experiencing unprecedented growth driven by many data-intensive applications. Significant efforts have been devoted to the design and implementation of low-complexity digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms that are suitable for these short-reach optical links. In this thesis, a novel low-complexity frequency-domain (FD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) equaliser with momentum-based gradient descent algorithm is proposed, capable of mitigating both static and dynamic impairments arising from the optical fibre. The proposed frequency-domain equaliser (FDE) also improves the robustness of the adaptive equaliser against feedback latencies which is the main disadvantage of FD adaptive equalisers under rapid channel variations. The development and maturity of optical fibre communication techniques over the past few decades have also been beneficial to many other fields, especially coherent light detection and ranging (LiDAR) techniques. Many applications of coherent LiDAR are also cost-sensitive, e.g., autonomous vehicles (AVs). Therefore, in this thesis, a low-cost and low-complexity single-photodiode-based coherent LiDAR system is investigated. The receiver sensitivity performance of this receiver architecture is assessed through both simulations and experiments, using two ranging waveforms known as double-sideband (DSB) amplitude-modulated chirp signal and single-sideband (SSB) frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) signals. Besides, the impact of laser phase noise on the ranging precision when operating within and beyond the laser coherence length is studied.     Spectral LADAR: Active Range-Resolved Imaging Spectroscopy

    Imaging spectroscopy using ambient or thermally generated optical sources is a well developed technique for capturing two dimensional images with high per-pixel spectral resolution. The per-pixel spectral data is often a sufficient sampling of a material's backscatter spectrum to infer chemical properties of the constituent material to aid in substance identification. Separately, conventional LADAR sensors use quasi-monochromatic laser radiation to create three dimensional images of objects at high angular resolution, compared to RADAR. Advances in dispersion engineered photonic crystal fibers in recent years have made high spectral radiance optical supercontinuum sources practical, enabling this study of Spectral LADAR, a continuous polychromatic spectrum augmentation of conventional LADAR. This imaging concept, which combines multi-spectral and 3D sensing at a physical level, is demonstrated with 25 independent and parallel LADAR channels and generates point cloud images with three spatial dimensions and one spectral dimension. The independence of spectral bands is a key characteristic of Spectral LADAR. Each spectral band maintains a separate time waveform record, from which target parameters are estimated. Accordingly, the spectrum computed for each backscatter reflection is independently and unambiguously range unmixed from multiple target reflections that may arise from transmission of a single panchromatic pulse. This dissertation presents the theoretical background of Spectral LADAR, a shortwave infrared laboratory demonstrator system constructed as a proof-of-concept prototype, and the experimental results obtained by the prototype when imaging scenes at stand off ranges of 45 meters. The resultant point cloud voxels are spectrally classified into a number of material categories which enhances object and feature recognition. Experimental results demonstrate the physical level combination of active backscatter spectroscopy and range resolved sensing to produce images with a level of complexity, detail, and accuracy that is not obtainable with data-level registration and fusion of conventional imaging spectroscopy and LADAR. The capabilities of Spectral LADAR are expected to be useful in a range of applications, such as biomedical imaging and agriculture, but particularly when applied as a sensor in unmanned ground vehicle navigation. Applications to autonomous mobile robotics are the principal motivators of this study, and are specifically addressed

    Convergence of millimeter-wave and photonic interconnect systems for very-high-throughput digital communication applications

    In the past, radio-frequency signals were commonly used for low-speed wireless electronic systems, and optical signals were used for multi-gigabit wired communication systems. However, as the emergence of new millimeter-wave technology introduces multi-gigabit transmission over a wireless radio-frequency channel, the borderline between radio-frequency and optical systems becomes blurred. As a result, there come ample opportunities to design and develop next-generation broadband systems to combine the advantages of these two technologies to overcome inherent limitations of various broadband end-to-end interconnect systems in signal generation, recovery, synchronization, and so on. For the transmission distances of a few centimeters to thousands of kilometers, the convergence of radio-frequency electronics and optics to build radio-over-fiber systems ushers in a new era of research for the upcoming very-high-throughput broadband services. Radio-over-fiber systems are believed to be the most promising solution to the backhaul transmission of the millimeter-wave wireless access networks, especially for the license-free, very-high-throughput 60-GHz band. Adopting radio-over-fiber systems in access or in-building networks can greatly extend the 60-GHz signal reach by using ultra-low loss optical fibers. However, such high frequency is difficult to generate in a straightforward way. In this dissertation, the novel techniques of homodyne and heterodyne optical-carrier suppressions for radio-over-fiber systems are investigated and various system architectures are designed to overcome these limitations of 60-GHz wireless access networks, bringing the popularization of multi-gigabit wireless networks to become closer to the reality. In addition to the advantages for the access networks, extremely high spectral efficiency, which is the most important parameter for long-haul networks, can be achieved by radio-over-fiber signal generation. As a result, the transmission performance of spectrally efficient radio-over-fiber signaling, including orthogonal frequency division multiplexing and orthogonal wavelength division multiplexing, is broadly and deeply investigated. On the other hand, radio-over-fiber is also used for the frequency synchronization that can resolve the performance limitation of wireless interconnect systems. A novel wireless interconnects assisted by radio-over-fiber subsystems is proposed in this dissertation. In conclusion, multiple advantageous facets of radio-over-fiber systems can be found in various levels of end-to-end interconnect systems.     High Precision Hybrid Pulse and Phase-Shift Laser Ranging System

    With the rapid development of military, aerospace, and precision manufacturing technology, a multitude of situations need to carry out a large-range and high-precision distance measurement. The growth of measurement applications has led to a higher requirement for the laser ranging technology which can be accomplished by using different patterns. At present, the pulse laser ranging method is widely used for medium-range and long-range measurement because of the fast measurement speed and considerable measurement range. However, the ranging precision is low. The short-distance measurement mostly adopts the phase-shift laser ranging method which has high ranging accuracy but limited measurement range. Therefore, the research on lifting the accuracy of pulse laser ranging method and extending the measurement range of the phase-shift laser ranging method will be carried out. In this thesis, combining the existing pulse laser ranging system and phase-shift laser ranging system, dual-frequency and single-frequency hybrid pulse and phase-shift laser ranging systems are proposed. The basis for solving the current problems of poor measurement precision in pulse laser ranging method and short measurement distance in phase-shift laser ranging method are provided. Also, the designed structures have a broad application prospect in the fields of industrial production, military, and aviation. At the beginning of the thesis, the principle and characteristics of the current typical laser ranging methods are introduced and analyzed. According to the Fourier Series theory, the spectrum analysis of the pulse signal and the relationship between the pulse signal and the same-frequency sinusoidal signal, the idea of phase-shift laser ranging based on pulse modulation signal is generated. Instead of a continuous sinusoidal signal, the laser is modulated with a periodic pulse signal. Distance measurement by calculating the phase difference on the sinusoidal signal extracted from the pulse signal with the same frequency at the receiving end. Based on the principle of conventional dual-frequency phase-shift laser ranging method, a dual-frequency pulse laser ranging method is proposed. The distance to be measured is obtained by transmitting two periodic pulse signals with different frequency and then combining the implementation of rough and accurate measurement outcomes. Afterward, a single-frequency pulse laser ranging method is introduced. After receiving the pulse signal, the direct counter method is used to realize rough measurement and phase-shift of the co-frequency sinusoidal signal is utilized to improve the ranging accuracy. This proposed model has the advantages of high ranging precision and long-distance measurement without any other auxiliary frequency. The accuracy of the phase difference calculation is the most critical element in both the dual-frequency and single-frequency laser ranging systems. Currently, the commonly used phase difference calculation methods operated in phase-shift laser ranging system are digital synchronous detection, fast Fourier transform method, and all phase fast Fourier transform method. Published works have discussed the performance of frequency estimation and initial phase calculation using these approaches. In this thesis, the precision of phase difference measurement based on these methods above is compared. The effects of normalized frequency deviation, white Gaussian noise, harmonics are simulated in MATLAB. Simulation results show that all phase fast Fourier transform method has a superior anti-noise ability so that exceptional accuracy of phase difference measurement can be achieved. Furthermore, as the number of sampling points increases, all phase fast Fourier transform method will obtain a more accurate calculation consequence. Finally, this thesis carries on the co-simulation test of the designed dual-frequency and single-frequency hybrid pulse and phase-shift laser ranging systems in Optisystem and MATLAB. The transmitting frequencies of pulse signals operated in the dual-frequency method are 15 MHz and 150 KHz. The pulse used in the single-frequency method is set to 15 MHz. In the simulation, the performance of proposed methods is tested by setting various measuring distance. When the number of sampling points is 1024, the standard deviation and ranging error of the dual-frequency method are 3.72 cm and 13.6 cm within 963.15 meters. For the single-frequency method, the results show a 3.78 cm standard deviation and 14.6 cm ranging error. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed ranging methods have lower ranging error compared with recently published works. It means that the combination of the pulse method and the phase-shift method can achieve high-accuracy and long-range measurement

    La communication ultra large bande (UWB) a attirĂ© une Ă©norme quantitĂ© de recherches ces derniĂšres annĂ©es, surtout aprĂšs la prĂ©sentation du masque spectral de US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Les impulsions ultra-courtes permettent de trĂšs hauts dĂ©bits de faible puissance tout en Ă©liminant les interfĂ©rences avec les systĂšmes existants Ă  bande Ă©troite. La faible puissance, cependant, limite la portĂ©e de propagation des radios UWB Ă  quelques mĂštres pour la transmission sans fil Ă  l’intĂ©rieur d’une piĂšce. En outre, des signaux UWB reçu sont Ă©tendus dans le temps en raison de la propagation par trajet multiple qui rĂ©sulte en beaucoup d’interfĂ©rence inter-symbole (ISI) Ă  haut dĂ©bit. Le monocycle Gaussien, l’impulsion la plus commune dans UWB, a une mauvaise couverture sous le masque de la FCC. Dans cette thĂšse, nous dĂ©montrons des transmet- teurs qui sont capables de gĂ©nĂ©rer des impulsions UWB avec une efficacitĂ© de puissance Ă©levĂ©e. Une impulsion efficace rĂ©sulte dans un rapport de signal Ă  bruit (SNR) supĂ©rieur au rĂ©cepteur en utilisant plus de la puissance disponible sous le masque spectral de la FCC. On produit les impulsions dans le domaine optique et utilise la fibre optique pour les transporter sur plusieurs kilomĂštres pour la distribution dans un rĂ©seau optique pas- sif. La fibre optique est trĂšs fiable pour le transport des signaux radio avec une faible consommation de puissance. On utilise les Ă©lĂ©ments simples comme un modulateur Mach-Zehnder ou un rĂ©sonateur en anneau pour gĂ©nĂ©rer des impulsions, ce qui permet l’intĂ©gration dans le silicium. Compatible avec la technologie CMOS, la photonique sur silicium a un potentiel Ă©norme pour abaisser le coĂ»t et l’encombrement des systĂšmes optiques. La photodĂ©tection convertit les impulsions optiques en impulsions Ă©lectriques avant la transmission sur l’antenne du cĂŽtĂ© de l’utilisateur. La rĂ©ponse frĂ©quentielle de l’antenne dĂ©forme la forme d’onde de l’impulsion UWB. Nous proposons une technique d’optimisation non-linĂ©aire qui prend en compte la distorsion d’antenne pour trouver des impulsions qui maximisent la puissance transmise, en respectant le masque spectral de la FCC. Nous travaillons avec trois antennes et concevons une impulsion unique pour chacune d’entre elle. L’amĂ©lioration de l’énergie des impulsions UWB amĂ©liore directement la SNR au rĂ©cepteur. Les rĂ©sultats de simulation montrent que les impulsions optimisĂ©es amĂ©liorent considĂ©rablement le taux d’erreur (BER) par rapport au monocycle Gaussien sous propagation par trajet multiple. Notre autre contribution est l’évaluation d’un filtre adaptĂ© pour recevoir efficacement des impulsions UWB. Le filtre adaptĂ© est synthĂ©tisĂ© et fabriquĂ© en technologie microstrip, en collaboration avec l’UniversitĂ© McGill comme un dispositif de bande interdite Ă©lectromagnĂ©tique. La rĂ©ponse frĂ©quentielle du filtre adaptĂ© montre une ex- cellente concordance avec le spectre ciblĂ© de l’impulsion UWB. Les mesures de BER confirment la performance supĂ©rieure du filtre adaptĂ© par rapport Ă  un rĂ©cepteur Ă  conversion directe. Le canal UWB est trĂšs riche en trajet multiple conduisant Ă  l’ISI Ă  haut dĂ©bit. Notre derniĂšre contribution est l’étude de performance des rĂ©cepteurs en simulant un systĂšme avec des conditions de canaux rĂ©alistes. Les rĂ©sultats de la simulation montrent que la performance d’un tel systĂšme se dĂ©grade de façon significative pour les hauts dĂ©bits. Afin de compenser la forte ISI dans les taux de transfert de donnĂ©es en Gb/s, nous Ă©tudions l’algorithme de Viterbi (VA) avec un nombre limitĂ© d’états et un Ă©galiseur DFE (decision feedback equalizer). Nous examinons le nombre d’états requis dans le VA, et le nombre de coefficients du filtre dans le DFE pour une transmission fiable de UWB en Gb/s dans les canaux en ligne de vue. L’évaluation par simulation de BER confirme que l’égalisation amĂ©liore considĂ©rablement les performances par rapport Ă  la dĂ©tection de symbole. La DFE a une meilleure performance par rapport Ă  la VA en utilisant une complexitĂ© comparable. La DFE peut couvrir une plus grande mĂ©moire de canal avec un niveau de complexitĂ© relativement rĂ©duit.Ultra-wideband (UWB) communication has attracted an enormous amount of research in recent years, especially after the introduction of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) spectral mask. Ultra-short pulses allow for very high bit-rates while low power eliminates interference with existing narrowband systems. Low power, however, limits the propagation range of UWB radios to a few meters for indoors wireless transmission. Furthermore, received UWB signals are spread in time because of multipath propagation which results in high intersymbol interference at high data rates. Gaussian monocycle, the most commonly employed UWB pulse, has poor coverage under the FCC mask. In this thesis we demonstrate transmitters capable of generating UWB pulses with high power efficiency at Gb/s bit-rates. An efficient pulse results in higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver by utilizing most of the available power under the FCC spectral mask. We generate the pulses in the optical domain and use optical fiber to transport the pulses over several kilometers for distribution in a passive optical network. Optical fiber is very reliable for transporting radio signals with low power consumption. We use simple elements such as a Mach Zehnder modulator or a ring resonator for pulse shaping, allowing for integration in silicon. Being compatible with CMOS technology, silicon photonics has huge potential for lowering the cost and bulkiness of optical systems. Photodetection converts the pulses to the electrical domain before antenna transmission at the user side. The frequency response of UWB antennas distorts the UWB waveforms. We pro- pose a nonlinear optimization technique which takes into account antenna distortion to find pulses that maximize the transmitted power, while respecting the FCC spectral mask. We consider three antennas and design a unique pulse for each. The energy improvement in UWB pulses directly improves the receiver SNR. Simulation results show that optimized pulses have a significant bit error rate (BER) performance improvement compared to the Gaussian monocycle under multipath propagation. Our other contribution is evaluating a matched filter to receive efficiently designed UWB pulses. The matched filter is synthesized and fabricated in microstrip technology in collaboration with McGill University as an electromagnetic bandgap device. The frequency response of the matched filter shows close agreement with the target UWB pulse spectrum. BER measurements confirm superior performance of the matched filter compared to a direct conversion receiver. The UWB channel is very rich in multipath leading to ISI at high bit rates. Our last contribution is investigating the performance of receivers by simulating a system employing realistic channel conditions. Simulation results show that the performance of such system degrades significantly for high data rates. To compensate the severe ISI at gigabit rates, we investigate the Viterbi algorithm (VA) with a limited number of states and the decision feedback equalizer (DFE). We examine the required number of states in the VA, and the number of taps in the DFE for reliable Gb/s UWB trans- mission for line-of-sight channels. Non-line-of-sight channels were also investigated at lower speeds. BER simulations confirm that equalization considerably improves the performance compared to symbol detection. The DFE results in better performance compared to the VA when using comparable complexity as the DFE can cover greater channel memory with a relatively low complexity level

    Development and Validation of an IMU/GPS/Galileo Integration Navigation System for UAV

    Several and distinct Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle (UAV) applications are emerging, demanding steps to be taken in order to allow those platforms to operate in an un-segregated airspace. The key risk component, hindering the widespread integration of UAV in an un-segregated airspace, is the autonomous component: the need for a high level of autonomy in the UAV that guarantees a safe and secure integration in an un-segregated airspace. At this point, the UAV accurate state estimation plays a fundamental role for autonomous UAV, being one of the main responsibilities of the onboard autopilot. Given the 21st century global economic paradigm, academic projects based on inexpensive UAV platforms but on expensive commercial autopilots start to become a non-economic solution. Consequently, there is a pressing need to overcome this problem through, on one hand, the development of navigation systems using the high availability of low cost, low power consumption, and small size navigation sensors offered in the market, and, on the other hand, using Global Navigation Satellite Systems Software Receivers (GNSS SR). Since the performance that is required for several applications in order to allow UAV to fly in an un-segregated airspace is not yet defined, for most UAV academic applications, the navigation system accuracy required should be at least the same as the one provided by the available commercial autopilots. This research focuses on the investigation of the performance of an integrated navigation system composed by a low performance inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a GNSS SR. A strapdown mechanization algorithm, to transform raw inertial data into navigation solution, was developed, implemented and evaluated. To fuse the data provided by the strapdown algorithm with the one provided by the GNSS SR, an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) was implemented in loose coupled closed-loop architecture, and then evaluated. Moreover, in order to improve the performance of the IMU raw data, the Allan variance and denoise techniques were considered for both studying the IMU error model and improving inertial sensors raw measurements. In order to carry out the study, a starting question was made and then, based on it, eight questions were derived. These eight secondary questions led to five hypotheses, which have been successfully tested along the thesis. This research provides a deliverable to the Project of Research and Technologies on Unmanned Air Vehicles (PITVANT) Group, consisting of a well-documented UAV Development and Validation of an IMU/GPS/Galileo Integration Navigation System for UAV II navigation algorithm, an implemented and evaluated navigation algorithm in the MatLab environment, and Allan variance and denoising algorithms to improve inertial raw data, enabling its full implementation in the existent Portuguese Air Force Academy (PAFA) UAV. The derivable provided by this thesis is the answer to the main research question, in such a way that it implements a step by step procedure on how the Strapdown IMU (SIMU)/GNSS SR should be developed and implemented in order to replace the commercial autopilot. The developed integrated SIMU/GNSS SR solution evaluated, in post-processing mode, through van-test scenario, using real data signals, at the Galileo Test and Development Environment (GATE) test area in Berchtesgaden, Germany, when confronted with the solution provided by the commercial autopilot, proved to be of better quality. Although no centimetre-level of accuracy was obtained for the position and velocity, the results confirm that the integration strategy outperforms the Piccolo system performance, being this the ultimate goal of this research work
