A new class of multiscale lattice cell (MLC) models for spatio-temporal evolutionary image representation

    Get PDF
Spatio-temporal evolutionary (STE) images are a class of complex dynamical systems that evolve over both space and time. With increased interest in the investigation of nonlinear complex phenomena, especially spatio-temporal behaviour governed by evolutionary laws that are dependent on both spatial and temporal dimensions, there has been an increased need to investigate model identification methods for this class of complex systems. Compared with pure temporal processes, the identification of spatio-temporal models from observed images is much more difficult and quite challenging. Starting with an assumption that there is no apriori information about the true model but only observed data are available, this study introduces a new class of multiscale lattice cell (MLC) models to represent the rules of the associated spatio-temporal evolutionary system. An application to a chemical reaction exhibiting a spatio-temporal evolutionary behaviour, is investigated to demonstrate the new modelling framework

Point Information Gain and Multidimensional Data Analysis

We generalize the Point information gain (PIG) and derived quantities, i.e. Point information entropy (PIE) and Point information entropy density (PIED), for the case of R\'enyi entropy and simulate the behavior of PIG for typical distributions. We also use these methods for the analysis of multidimensional datasets. We demonstrate the main properties of PIE/PIED spectra for the real data on the example of several images, and discuss possible further utilization in other fields of data processing.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

Exploitation of Intra-Spectral Band Correlation for Rapid Feacture Selection and Target Identification in Hyperspectral Imagery

This research extends the work produced by Capt. Robert Johnson for detecting target pixels within hyperspectral imagery (HSI). The methodology replaces Principle Components Analysis for dimensionality reduction with a clustering algorithm which seeks to associate spectral rather than spatial dimensions. By seeking similar spectral dimensions, the assumption of no a priori knowledge of the relationship between clustered members can be eliminated and clusters are formed by seeking high correlated adjacent spectral bands. Following dimensionality reduction Independent Components Analysis (ICA) is used to perform feature extraction. Kurtosis and Potential Target Fraction are added to Maximum Component Score and Potential Target Signal to Noise Ratio as mechanisms for discriminating between target and non-target maps. A new methodology exploiting Johnson’s Maximum Distance Secant Line method replaces the first zero bin method for identifying the breakpoint between signal and noise. A parameter known as Left Partial Kurtosis is defined and applied to determine when target pixels are likely to be found in the left tail of each signal histogram. A variable control over the number of iterations of Adaptive Iterative Noise filtering is introduced. Results of this modified algorithm are compared to those of Johnson’s AutoGAD [2007]
