Managing access to the internet in public libraries in the UK: the findings of the MAIPLE project
One of the key purposes of the public library is to provide access to information (UNESCO, 1994). In the UK, information is provided in printed formats and for the last decade via public access Internet workstations installed as part of the People’s Network initiative. Recent figures reveal that UK public libraries provide approximately 40,000
computer terminals offering users around 80,000 hours across more than 4,000 service points (CIPFA, 2012). In addition, increasing numbers of public libraries allow users to connect devices such as tablets or smart phones to the Internet via a wireless network access point (Wi-Fi). How do public library staff manage this? What about users viewing
harmful or illegal content? And what are the implications for a profession committed to freedom of access to information and opposition to censorship?
MAIPLE, a two-year project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council has been investigating this issue as little was known about how UK public libraries manage Internet content control including illegal material. MAIPLE has drawn on an extensive review of the literature, an online survey to which all UK public library services were invited to participate (39 per cent response rate) and case studies with five services (two in England, one in Scotland, one in
Wales and one in Northern Ireland) to examine the ways these issues are managed and their implications for staff.
This presentation will explore the prevalence of tools such as filtering software, Acceptable Use Policies, user authentication, booking software and visual monitoring by staff and consider their efficacy and desirability in the provision of public Internet access. It will consider the professional dilemmas inherent within managing content and
access. Finally, it will highlight some of the more important themes emerging from the findings and their implications for practitioners and policy makers

SUPPORTING ENGINEERING DESIGN OF ADDITIVELY MANUFACTURED MEDICAL DEVICES WITH KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT THROUGH ONTOLOGIES
Medical environments pose a substantial challenge for engineering designers. They combine significant knowledge demands with large investment for new product development and severe consequences in the case of design failure. Engineering designers must contend with an often-chaotic environment to which they have limited access and familiarity, a user base that is difficult to engage and highly diverse in many attributes, and a market structure that often pits stakeholders against one another. As medical care in general moves towards personalized models and surgical tools towards less invasive options emerging manufacturing technologies in additive manufacturing offer significant potential for the design of highly innovative medical devices. At the same time however these same technologies also introduce yet more challenges to the design process.
This dissertation presents a knowledge-based approach to addressing the existing and emerging challenges of medical device design. The approach aims to address these challenges using knowledge captured in a suite of modular ontologies modeling knowledge domains that must be considered in medical device design. These include ontologies for understanding clinical context, human factors, regulation, enterprise, and manufacturability. Together these ontologies support design ideation, knowledge capture, and design verification. These ontologies are subsequently used to formulate a comprehensive knowledge framework for medical device design, and to enable an innovative design process. Case studies analyzing the design of surgical tools in several medical specialties are used to assess the capabilities of this approach
User requirement elicitation for cross-language information retrieval
Who are the users of a cross-language retrieval system? Under what circumstances do they need to perform such multi-language searches? How will the task and the context
of use affect successful interaction with the system? Answers to these questions were explored in a user study performed as part of the design stages of Clarity, a EU
founded project on cross-language information retrieval. The findings resulted in a rethink of the planned user interface and a consequent expansion of the set of services
offered. This paper reports on the methodology and techniques used for the elicitation of user requirements as well as how these were in turn transformed into new design
solutions
Data-Driven Technology Management Supported by Artificial Intelligence Solutions
Technology Management is an important part of a company’s business strategy. Procuring, evaluating and processing information is crucial for this process' success. This paper describes the way of dealing with today’s challenge of information overload. We introduce technology databases based on the patented TCB/SETS system, concepts of Artificial Intelligence-based information processing and present exemplary existing solutions. Afterwards, we discuss a concept which combines TCB/SETS and information retrieval solutions to a new smart approach.
