Near-Instantaneously Adaptive HSDPA-Style OFDM Versus MC-CDMA Transceivers for WIFI, WIMAX, and Next-Generation Cellular Systems
Burts-by-burst (BbB) adaptive high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) style multicarrier systems are reviewed, identifying their most critical design aspects. These systems exhibit numerous attractive features, rendering them eminently eligible for employment in next-generation wireless systems. It is argued that BbB-adaptive or symbol-by-symbol adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) modems counteract the near instantaneous channel quality variations and hence attain an increased throughput or robustness in comparison to their fixed-mode counterparts. Although they act quite differently, various diversity techniques, such as Rake receivers and space-time block coding (STBC) are also capable of mitigating the channel quality variations in their effort to reduce the bit error ratio (BER), provided that the individual antenna elements experience independent fading. By contrast, in the presence of correlated fading imposed by shadowing or time-variant multiuser interference, the benefits of space-time coding erode and it is unrealistic to expect that a fixed-mode space-time coded system remains capable of maintaining a near-constant BER
Turbo Decoding and Detection for Wireless Applications
A historical perspective of turbo coding and turbo transceivers inspired by the generic turbo principles is provided, as it evolved from Shannonâs visionary predictions. More specifically, we commence by discussing the turbo principles, which have been shown to be capable of performing close to Shannonâs capacity limit. We continue by reviewing the classic maximum a posteriori probability decoder. These discussions are followed by studying the effect of a range of system parameters in a systematic fashion, in order to gauge their performance ramifications. In the second part of this treatise, we focus our attention on the family of iterative receivers designed for wireless communication systems, which were partly inspired by the invention of turbo codes. More specifically, the family of iteratively detected joint coding and modulation schemes, turbo equalization, concatenated spacetime and channel coding arrangements, as well as multi-user detection and three-stage multimedia systems are highlighted
New Concept of PLC Modems: Multi-Carrier System for Frequency Selective Slow-Fading Channels Based on Layered SCCC Turbocodes
The article introduces a novel concept of a PLC modem as a complement to the existing G3 and PRIME standards for communications using medium- or high-voltage overhead or cable lines. The proposed concept is based on the fact that the levels of impulse noise and frequency selectivity are lower on high-voltage lines than on low-voltage ones. Also, the demands for âcost-effectiveâ circuitry design are not so crucial as in the case of modems for low-voltage level. In contract to these positive conditions, however, there is the need to overcome much longer distances and to take into account low SNR on the receiving side. With respect to the listed reasons, our concept makes use of MCM, instead of OFDM. The assumption of low SNR is compensated through the use of an efficient channel coding based on a serially concatenated turbo code. In addition, MCM offers lower latency and PAPR compared to OFDM. Therefore, when using MCM, it is possible to excite the line with higher power. The proposed concept has been verified during experimental transmission of testing data over a real, 5 km long, 22kV overhead line
Constellation Shaping for WDM systems using 256QAM/1024QAM with Probabilistic Optimization
In this paper, probabilistic shaping is numerically and experimentally
investigated for increasing the transmission reach of wavelength division
multiplexed (WDM) optical communication system employing quadrature amplitude
modulation (QAM). An optimized probability mass function (PMF) of the QAM
symbols is first found from a modified Blahut-Arimoto algorithm for the optical
channel. A turbo coded bit interleaved coded modulation system is then applied,
which relies on many-to-one labeling to achieve the desired PMF, thereby
achieving shaping gain. Pilot symbols at rate at most 2% are used for
synchronization and equalization, making it possible to receive input
constellations as large as 1024QAM. The system is evaluated experimentally on a
10 GBaud, 5 channels WDM setup. The maximum system reach is increased w.r.t.
standard 1024QAM by 20% at input data rate of 4.65 bits/symbol and up to 75% at
5.46 bits/symbol. It is shown that rate adaptation does not require changing of
the modulation format. The performance of the proposed 1024QAM shaped system is
validated on all 5 channels of the WDM signal for selected distances and rates.
Finally, it was shown via EXIT charts and BER analysis that iterative
demapping, while generally beneficial to the system, is not a requirement for
achieving the shaping gain.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, Journal of Lightwave Technology, 201
On a Hybrid Preamble/Soft-Output Demapper Approach for Time Synchronization for IEEE 802.15.6 Narrowband WBAN
In this paper, we present a maximum likelihood (ML) based time
synchronization algorithm for Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN). The proposed
technique takes advantage of soft information retrieved from the soft demapper
for the time delay estimation. This algorithm has a low complexity and is
adapted to the frame structure specified by the IEEE 802.15.6 standard for the
narrowband systems. Simulation results have shown good performance which
approach the theoretical mean square error limit bound represented by the
Cramer Rao Bound (CRB)
An Iterative Detection Aided Unequal Error Protection Wavelet Video Scheme Using Irregular Convolutional Codes
A wavelet-based videophone scheme proposed, where the video bits are Unequal Error Protection (UEP) using Irregular Convolutional Codes (IRCCs). The proposed system uses Adaptive Arithmetic Coding (AAC) for encoding the motion vectors and individual wavelet subband coefficients. The turbo equalized IRCC-aided videophone scheme is capable of attaining a near unimpaired video quality for channel Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) in excess of about 4.5dB over a five-path dispersive AWGN channel
