The projector algorithm: a simple parallel algorithm for computing Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay graphs
The Voronoi diagram is a certain geometric data structure which has numerous
applications in various scientific and technological fields. The theory of
algorithms for computing 2D Euclidean Voronoi diagrams of point sites is rich
and useful, with several different and important algorithms. However, this
theory has been quite steady during the last few decades in the sense that no
essentially new algorithms have entered the game. In addition, most of the
known algorithms are serial in nature and hence cast inherent difficulties on
the possibility to compute the diagram in parallel. In this paper we present
the projector algorithm: a new and simple algorithm which enables the
(combinatorial) computation of 2D Voronoi diagrams. The algorithm is
significantly different from previous ones and some of the involved concepts in
it are in the spirit of linear programming and optics. Parallel implementation
is naturally supported since each Voronoi cell can be computed independently of
the other cells. A new combinatorial structure for representing the cells (and
any convex polytope) is described along the way and the computation of the
induced Delaunay graph is obtained almost automatically.Comment: This is a major revision; re-organization and better presentation of

Vesicle computers: Approximating Voronoi diagram on Voronoi automata
Irregular arrangements of vesicles filled with excitable and precipitating
chemical systems are imitated by Voronoi automata --- finite-state machines
defined on a planar Voronoi diagram. Every Voronoi cell takes four states:
resting, excited, refractory and precipitate. A resting cell excites if it has
at least one excited neighbour; the cell precipitates if a ratio of excited
cells in its neighbourhood to its number of neighbours exceed certain
threshold. To approximate a Voronoi diagram on Voronoi automata we project a
planar set onto automaton lattice, thus cells corresponding to data-points are
excited. Excitation waves propagate across the Voronoi automaton, interact with
each other and form precipitate in result of the interaction. Configuration of
precipitate represents edges of approximated Voronoi diagram. We discover
relation between quality of Voronoi diagram approximation and precipitation
threshold, and demonstrate feasibility of our model in approximation Voronoi

Farthest-Polygon Voronoi Diagrams
Given a family of k disjoint connected polygonal sites in general position
and of total complexity n, we consider the farthest-site Voronoi diagram of
these sites, where the distance to a site is the distance to a closest point on
it. We show that the complexity of this diagram is O(n), and give an O(n log^3
n) time algorithm to compute it. We also prove a number of structural
properties of this diagram. In particular, a Voronoi region may consist of k-1
connected components, but if one component is bounded, then it is equal to the
entire region
A numerical algorithm for semi-discrete optimal transport in 3D
This paper introduces a numerical algorithm to compute the optimal
transport map between two measures and , where derives from a
density defined as a piecewise linear function (supported by a
tetrahedral mesh), and where is a sum of Dirac masses.
I first give an elementary presentation of some known results on optimal
transport and then observe a relation with another problem (optimal sampling).
This relation gives simple arguments to study the objective functions that
characterize both problems.
I then propose a practical algorithm to compute the optimal transport map
between a piecewise linear density and a sum of Dirac masses in 3D. In this
semi-discrete setting, Aurenhammer et.al [\emph{8th Symposium on Computational
Geometry conf. proc.}, ACM (1992)] showed that the optimal transport map is
determined by the weights of a power diagram. The optimal weights are computed
by minimizing a convex objective function with a quasi-Newton method. To
evaluate the value and gradient of this objective function, I propose an
efficient and robust algorithm, that computes at each iteration the
intersection between a power diagram and the tetrahedral mesh that defines the
measure .
The numerical algorithm is experimented and evaluated on several datasets,
with up to hundred thousands tetrahedra and one million Dirac masses.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figure
Searching edges in the overlap of two plane graphs
Consider a pair of plane straight-line graphs, whose edges are colored red
and blue, respectively, and let n be the total complexity of both graphs. We
present a O(n log n)-time O(n)-space technique to preprocess such pair of
graphs, that enables efficient searches among the red-blue intersections along
edges of one of the graphs. Our technique has a number of applications to
geometric problems. This includes: (1) a solution to the batched red-blue
search problem [Dehne et al. 2006] in O(n log n) queries to the oracle; (2) an
algorithm to compute the maximum vertical distance between a pair of 3D
polyhedral terrains one of which is convex in O(n log n) time, where n is the
total complexity of both terrains; (3) an algorithm to construct the Hausdorff
Voronoi diagram of a family of point clusters in the plane in O((n+m) log^3 n)
time and O(n+m) space, where n is the total number of points in all clusters
and m is the number of crossings between all clusters; (4) an algorithm to
construct the farthest-color Voronoi diagram of the corners of n axis-aligned
rectangles in O(n log^2 n) time; (5) an algorithm to solve the stabbing circle
problem for n parallel line segments in the plane in optimal O(n log n) time.
All these results are new or improve on the best known algorithms.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure
Bregman Voronoi Diagrams: Properties, Algorithms and Applications
The Voronoi diagram of a finite set of objects is a fundamental geometric
structure that subdivides the embedding space into regions, each region
consisting of the points that are closer to a given object than to the others.
We may define many variants of Voronoi diagrams depending on the class of
objects, the distance functions and the embedding space. In this paper, we
investigate a framework for defining and building Voronoi diagrams for a broad
class of distance functions called Bregman divergences. Bregman divergences
include not only the traditional (squared) Euclidean distance but also various
divergence measures based on entropic functions. Accordingly, Bregman Voronoi
diagrams allow to define information-theoretic Voronoi diagrams in statistical
parametric spaces based on the relative entropy of distributions. We define
several types of Bregman diagrams, establish correspondences between those
diagrams (using the Legendre transformation), and show how to compute them
efficiently. We also introduce extensions of these diagrams, e.g. k-order and
k-bag Bregman Voronoi diagrams, and introduce Bregman triangulations of a set
of points and their connexion with Bregman Voronoi diagrams. We show that these
triangulations capture many of the properties of the celebrated Delaunay
triangulation. Finally, we give some applications of Bregman Voronoi diagrams
which are of interest in the context of computational geometry and machine
