    A Third Measure-Metastable State in the Dynamics of Spontaneous Shape Change in Healthy Human's White Cells

    Human polymorphonuclear leucocytes, PMN, are highly motile cells with average 12-15 µm diameters and prominent, loboid nuclei. They are produced in the bone marrow, are essential for host defense, and are the most populous of white blood cell types. PMN also participate in acute and chronic inflammatory processes, in the regulation of the immune response, in angiogenesis, and interact with tumors. To accommodate these varied functions, their behavior is adaptive, but still definable in terms of a set of behavioral states. PMN morphodynamics have generally involved a non-equilibrium stationary, spheroid Idling state that transitions to an activated, ellipsoid translocating state in response to chemical signals. These two behavioral shape-states, spheroid and ellipsoid, are generally recognized as making up the vocabulary of a healthy PMN. A third, “random” state has occasionally been reported as associated with disease states. I have observed this third, Treadmilling state, in PMN from healthy subjects, the cells demonstrating metastable dynamical behaviors known to anticipate phase transitions in mathematical, physical, and biological systems. For this study, human PMN were microscopically imaged and analyzed as single living cells. I used a microscope with a novel high aperture, cardioid annular condenser with better than 100 nanometer resolution of simultaneous, mixed dark field and intrinsic fluorescent images to record shape changes in 189 living PMNs. Relative radial roundness, R(t), served as a computable order parameter. Comparison of R(t) series of 10 cells in the Idling and 10 in the Treadmilling state reveals the robustness of the “random” appearing Treadmilling state, and the emergence of behaviors observed in the neighborhood of global state transitions, including increased correlation length and variance (divergence), sudden jumps, mixed phases, bimodality, power spectral scaling and temporal slowing. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 86-88).Porous collagen-glycosaminoglycan (CG) scaffolds have been studied extensively and proven to be capable of tissue regeneration in vivo for applications including skin regeneration templates, hollow nerve guides and conjunctiva regeneration. While the current CG scaffold has been thoroughly examined both mechanically and clinically, it has yet to prove appropriate for load- bearing applications. This study will investigate the mechanical properties of a mineralized CG scaffold and its application potential in a load-bearing environment. Through the introduction of calcium-phosphate mineral into the standard CG formulation the matrix analog will be available for bone regeneration. Utilizing a patented triple co-precipitation technique developed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cambridge University, a homogeneous mineralized scaffold will be manufactured. Comparison to healthy trabecular bone as well as the selection of the most appropriate extracellular matrix analog will be presented. The key to commercial success is the introduction of a bi-layer bone and cartilage regeneration template to address concerns and difficulties in cartilage repair today. This dual combination is termed a layered osteochondral scaffold.(cont.) The commercial viability of this product as well as the company founded on its inception, OrthoCaP, Inc., is delivered as a start-up venture over the next eight to ten years. With several key patents already filed, an extensive patent search was completed to establish leading competitors and technology in the marketplace. Although still in the primary phases of development, short-term profitability can be seen through licensing the technology to larger more secure firms. Long-term profitability is realized through a more scientific approach of broadening the technology to other areas of tissue regeneration and modifying the mechanical and material characteristics associated with collagen based templates.by Cassandra Holzgartner Ott.M.Eng

    It is the intention of this dissertation to provide a 'theory' of African American religious experience that is guided by postmodern critical thought, with particular emphasis on methodologies attempting to grasp what is referred to as the quotidian, the ordinary, but primarily as "everyday life." It is my contention that this constitutes a promising approach that African American religionists should consider. Indeed, for almost forty years, there has been one dominant interpretative lens for the study of African American religious experience, often referred to as a hermeneutics of liberation. It is my contention that this orientation, with its emphasis on the macroscopic, is markedly inadequate. I maintain that what is needed is a focus on the microscopic. Moreover, I also assert that if there is to be a locus for opposition to oppression, it is to be found on the level of the "everyday" --- that which is often passed over as insignificant or irrelevant

    Object Detection and Tracking in Cooperative Multi-Robot Transportation

    Contemporary manufacturing systems imply the utilization of autonomous robotic systems, mainly for the execution of manipulation and transportation tasks. With a goal to reduce transportation and manipulation time, improve efficiency, and achieve flexibility of intelligent manufacturing systems, two or more intelligent mobile robots can be exploited. Such multi-robot systems require coordination and some level of communication between heterogeneous or homogeneous robotic systems. In this paper, we propose the utilization of two heterogeneous robotic systems, original intelligent mobile robots RAICO (Robot with Artificial Intelligence based COgnition) and DOMINO (Deep learning-based Omnidirectional Mobile robot with Intelligent cOntrol), for transportation tasks within a laboratory model of a manufacturing environment. In order to reach an adequate cooperation level and avoid collision while moving along predefined paths, our own developed intelligent mobile robots RAICO and DOMINO will communicate their current poses, and object detection and tracking system is developed. A stereo vision system equipped with two parallelly placed industrial-grade cameras is used for image acquisition, while convolutional neural networks are utilized for object detection, classification, and tracking. The proposed object detection and tracking system enables real-time tracking of another mobile robot within the same manufacturing environment. Furthermore, continuous information about mobile robot poses and the size of the bounding box generated by the convolutional neural network in the process of detection of another mobile robot is used for estimation of object movement and collision avoidance. Mobile robot localization through time is performed based on kinematic models of two intelligent mobile robots, and conducted experiments within a laboratory model of manufacturing environment confirm the applicability of the proposed framework for object detection and collision avoidance
